    I waited for a few reviews of this device and then decided to instead go with the 3+, so that's what I got a few weeks ago. The sticks and analog triggers are cool, but I felt the 16:9 screen had more uses for me than being stuck with a 4:3 only device. Black bars on 4:3 games don't bother me, the start and select button placement that everyone complains about I actually like (though it would be nice if they were two separate buttons instead of a rocker style button.) So now I have a system I can do all of what this one can plus play PSP really well, do GBA bigger, and I can use it to stream from my pc, Xbox, or game pass as well as android native games. Still this device is cool and for anyone looking for a device in this price range that has to have a 4:3 screen this is a great way to go. I agree, though I do hope those sticks make it onto other devices in the future.

      im debating now between the 2 myself i just want to know can either download and run old school runescape thats my question and i havent seen anything on yt showing this is it possible?

      @@kevOzilla There is an android version and it and I just checked on the Google Play Store, and it says it is compatible with my 3+ so I would assume it is going to work just fine. Now, with that said, I don't know if it has controller support or if you would have to configure it with the touch screen controller configurator or not. It is not a game I have much experience with to be able to help any further, though.

      Just got an RP2S. You could say I just downgraded from an Anbernic RG505, but it’s an improvement over the widescreen handhelds in some ways IMO (no disrespect for your choice!).
      Price is a major factor for me. It feels like I’m working a minimum wage job right now, cutting corners and cooking instead of eating out almost everyday, etc, so my fun budget is limited but I still need entertainment to unwind and projects to occupy myself. The RP2S is just inexpensive and high value. I got lucky, a coworker was basically able to buy my RG505 at original price so I was refunded the difference (food for a week and a half!).
      Second, design. I don’t really think one bar is more comfortable than another slab in the hand, but my fingers appreciate triggers and a stacked button design more than the somewhat confusing in-line shoulders, and the thumbsticks are nice like the original Dreamcast analog stick (which wasn’t padded, but superior to the N64 and PSX sticks because they had Hall effect sensors, just like the RP2S). This size will also fit in my pocket, actually able to coexist in my front jeans pocket back to back with my phone. The best device is the one you have with you, right? I want to try the PSP library, but honestly widescreen on a small screen is kind of confusing to me.
      Lastly, and this may be a larger benefit compared to the RG505 than your RP3+, but I really like the idea that I can “dock” the handheld to a TV for an impromptu couch gaming/multiplayer experience. The RP3+ can do this too, but the RG505 cannot, and again the RP2S is cheaper and more portable, and the analog triggers will actually make using this as a Dreamcast emulator/ Modern Console streaming endpoint much better (tho Bluetooth controllers are also an option). PSP and GBA will be fine on a monitor or TV too, though GBA text is big enough that probably that won’t be much of an issue.
      Anyway, just ranting, probably to myself. Hope we both enjoy good games!

    I already have a RP3+ but I got the 2S since I've been looking for more performance out of my MM+ and RG35XX recently. RP3+ will be for GBA and PSP mostly and the 2S for any system/game with a 4:3 aspect ratio that it can play. I will also be able to sync my saves with my RP3+ (with Syncthing). It will be so much better than to pull out SD cards all the time to move game saves.

    I still don't regret getting the 405m honestly. That half of an inch bigger screen makes a big difference IMO and by the looks of it, it seems easier to pocket too. The only gripe I've got with it is its weight, I wish they'd offer a plastic version (I happen to prefer the haptics of plastic too nowadays honestly, doesn't get as smudgy as metal if that makes sense)

    • @JoeysRetroHandhelds
      @JoeysRetroHandhelds  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep, shouldn't be a regret at all, this just is a better option for those that don't have the 405M yet. (and can deal with the screen)

      Funny how opinions diverge. The big no for the Anbernic for me was the non stack shoulders. But I agree a 4" screen would be better. Still in love with my RP2S 😊

    Hey Joey, I’ve been watching the channel for a while now. I always wanted to play games like Luigi’s mansion, but I had no money and if I was to get a handheld it would have to be in the $100 range so I finely decided to get a retroid pocket 2s!

    Great review! I've been interested in owning a pocketable retro handheld for a while now, but couldn't justify any big purchases since I already own a Steam Deck that I love. It plays everything I want, it just doesn't fit in my pocket. With the recent Aliexpress sales, I decided to pick up an Anbernic 35XXH for $46 which is a really solid price that packs in a a good amount of performance. The biggest reasons I went with it were because of how small it is while including thumbsticks, and while being vertical. I just got it yesterday and started recording an unboxing when I noticed the screen was glitched with flickering vertical lines, both in game and on the home screen.
    So, I've decided to send it back and pay a little more for better quality and better performance with the 2S. I'm extremely excited for it because I love the form factor and because of the price to performance ratio. The only thing I wish was that the triggers were a little slimmer so it would be easier to fit in and out of my pockets, but I'll adjust to it. The hardest part is waiting.
    Can't wait to see what the future holds in these handhelds as they get more powerful, pocketable, and affordable!

    It's been over a month, what are you playing more? ... Considering a RP2s over a RP4 to compliant an ROG Ally, mainly for travel, however the lack of capability for new systems (PS2) is making it a tough choice. The Oden 2 just seems so much larger/heavier/expensive for it to be a contender for me personally. Any thoughts?

I like using the “programable” button as the analog switch button on PlayStation and in some emulators that I cant combine buttons, I use it as a Fast Forward button :D best of wishes to all!

    I'm watching because the algorithm recommended it just now and I'm passively in the market for an affordable handheld. Watching your and other's reviews I realize that coming into this hobby through "slapping a controller on an Android phone" has kind of spoiled me. I expect everything to run games as good as a new $75-$100 prepaid phone and then I get disappointed when they inevitably barely top out at PS1. This Pocket 2S seems to be the rare handheld that is both competitive on price and performance with low end phones while giving all the neatness and convenience of being an all-in-one unit.
    IRT Dreamcast games; my knowledge is basically sports and racing games. Here's a few that I liked; but, aren't ever really used in emulation showcases:
    "F355 Challenge" is a very faithful port of Sega AM2's Ferrari arcade cabinet. Just because it was an arcade game doesn't mean it was an arcade racer. Far from it. It was about as tough a simulator as the 1990s could make and the graphics are gorgeous upscaled. It took full advantage of the analog triggers and is one of my favorite racers ever. It's also on PS2. It could be just me; but, I don't think that version looks as good. It has a chase cam though. The Dreamcast version didn't because the arcade version didn't, as far as I remember.
    "Metropolis Street Racer" was the first entry in the 'Project Gotham Racing' series and was a Dreamcast exclusive. It had the kudos system from the later games and a decent selection of cars. The graphics were incredible and the physics were fine.
    "Tokyo Xtreme Racer" is 'Need For Speed' or 'Fast and Furious' in Tokyo. You've probably played these games on other platforms; but, the Dreamcast versions are very enjoyable.
    "Sega GT" is 'Gran Turismo 1' with better graphics and floatier handling. It you can make peace with the handling then it's a fine game with tons of CarPG content to offer.
    "Sega Sports 2K2" are all legitimately great, with the possible exception of the baseball game. Both football games (pro and college) and the NBA game are amazing. Sega's college football game actually modeled my local college stadium. It's a second tier D1 bowl school that always got a generic stadium in EA's NCAA games. Their hockey game is outstanding except every goalie plays like Manny Legace after drinking a whole case of Mountain Dew. Fun fact; 'NHL 2K2' was developed by Treyarch, the 'Call of Duty: Black Ops' dev. The 2K Sports are also some of the toughest games to run on the system because of, I presume, all the physics calculations.
    "Air Force Delta" is 'Ace Combat' at home. That's very unfair, I guess. It has nice graphics, solid gameplay, and a variety of planes. I sucked at it then and I suck at it now; but I still enjoy revisiting it because it has a certain charm to it.
    Now off to check out your RP3 video. PS: I thought it was amusing that while you were showing off the screen bonding issue by repeatedly pressing on it, the game playing on-screen was talking about "increasing damage". Intentional joke or happy accident?

    My RG35XX died. Like totally. No idea what happened. Was going to buy an H as I own a deck but then the lack of PSP and not all N64 library works... So I got one of these. I was considering the 405m at a point but then checking the differences between the T618 and T610 I was feeling a bit like it was not worth to fork out the extra cash. A bit like your conclusion. If you got flawless PS2 and GC on the 405m... Maybe... But if there is a game I really want to play I can always use my deck and this runs pretty much everything else (including Mario Sunshine :D) so yeah. 2S it is.

    I went with the RG405M instead.
    I own many retro handhelds and several from retroid themselves. They make great hardware but imho all of them had flaws that make it less fun to use over time.
    For me the rp2+ was a game changer. So much performance on such a small package. I played it non stop for a month and thought it was going to be the end game.... But then things started piling up. The dpad is just too stiff. Too hard to press. The buttons are tiny. After the second month I shelved the damn thing and havent touched it since. I had a similar experience with the rp3+ and after the honey moon period I still use it as its not as flawed as the 2+ but its not a device I love personally.
    I had the 2s in my cart and even bought it but refunded it. I just know retroid is going to piss me with something
    I picked the 405m instead because anbernic imho has the best dpad and face buttons in the space. The added 0.5" of screen make a HUGE difference in text legibility and eye strain as well. Honestly I dont think I can go back to a 3.5" device other than like a mini plus or 35xx for portability sake.
    The 2s has huge bezels. They really should have found a 4 inch screen.
    Anyways I am very happy with the 405m so far. Only had it for about a week and im harassing anbernic to send me new sticks since mine make the famous clicking sound. Other than that the damn thing just feels GOOD to play.
    I booted alien hominid on the ps2 and it was just a Joy to play. The added screen space also makes psp and other 16:9 systems at the edge of playable.
    Psp is worth less on a 3.5" screen imho and its such a good system.
    So yeah the 2s has an amazing price but for my money the 405m was the better purchase. I wish there was a dpad on top plastic variant though...

    This under $100 thing needs to stop I just ordered the 4gb ram model and it was $146 even if I would have gotten the 3gb ram model it was still going to be $130. So no one is buying this under $100. Under $100 what is looking good is the R36s the rg35xx.

    Hey, thanks so much for the review dude! I'm just jumping into the world of retro handhelds(seems like a great time after researching releases this year) & have been doing a lot of research in just the past week or so. Reddit, Discord, TH-cam Reviews... Watched quite a bit of your videos along with a few other channels to glean info & perspective.
    I wanted to ask you. Do you think this would run N64 ROM Hacks well? Like SM64, Zelda, and Banjo 🤔 There's some very very good hacks of those N64 games that I've played & streamed with my 8 year old laptop. If it can run 'some' GC, PS2, Wii, 3DS, I would like to think it could run N64 ROM Hacks 🤔 But idk; wanted to know if you had any ideas/thoughts 👍 Thanks in advance! 🙏
    I'm looking to pick one up as a surprise for one of my childhood friends I've been friends with for over 20 years 😎 We've both played lots of video games over the years & hopefully he'll think something like this is cool! And then probably getting one for myself too. I think he'll really like it!
    I was looking at this device and watching & waiting for the different reviews to come out, with people's thoughts on the RP2S. Besides the screen size being a bit small doesn't seem like it has many qualms... Also, did you test out the micro HDMI out on a TV/Monitor? And if so how'd you like it 🙂 I read it displays 480p in 3:2 aspect ratio or something, compared to the 4:3 of the device's display.

    • @JoeysRetroHandhelds
      @JoeysRetroHandhelds  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Thanks for the comment. It should play N64 romhacks just fine, can't think of any reason it wouldn't since it plays every other N64 game already. As for the hdmi out, that's something I didn't test since it's not something I'd use personally, but I think RetroGameCorps did IIRC.

    • @Ap616
      @Ap616 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course! Alright, sweet. I was thinking so too. The ROM Hacks are a little more taxing than native N64 hardware can handle at times/a bunch not being console compatible. But I figured this was enough of a leap in power to emulate & run them just fine. Guess I'll find out if I pick one of these up and configure + test it.
      Based on your mainly portable use case for smaller screen devices, I was assuming you wouldn't be using the micro HDMI out much. But just was wondering if you tested it at all. I think I saw 2 others test it 🤔 So I can go off those for a "console" experience, unless I see even more from other reviewers.
      Thanks again, and have a good one man!

    I'm NGL I REALLY hate this Form-Factor it's basically a Brick with Buttons on it. After my dreadful experience with the Original Retroid Pocket 2 my hands start to cramp up everytime I touch a Handheld with this Form-Factor. They could have at least tapered or more preferably rounded off the edges to make it more like a Candy Bar. However they just continued the Flat Brick with Buttons design. 😕

    Hi all, is there any console in the market with as good buttons but with a bigger screen ?
    I'm new to this kind of product and tempted to get my 1st one. I never got one between my hand, but the most important factor to me is the quality of button/sticks and it seems they are great in this one (especially the sticks and R2/L2).
    I'm also looking for one that has TV output to have the true feeling that I'm actually playing Nes, Snes etc., so it's a deal breaker for the anbernic 405M.
