really common job this guys, if you own this engine you may of had this done, if you haven't there is a good chance you may in its ownership so will give everyone an insight to the job. Although this video makes it look very easy this is actually an 8 hour job! Hope you enjoy all the best everyone.
I had this job done a couple of weeks ago (leak was just a slight weep though) - it was picked up at a routine service. Turbo was OK. 167k on the clock. Hopefully it’s going to last a long time now! Great video, by the way - liked & subscribed 😀
Hi, great, first video I have found with the same surging, I seem to have this fault, is there a way to check the turbo itself to garentee it is at fault?
I have the surge I have the pressure code and no eml.
I must say though it is intermittent, doesn't do it every time you floor it, 50% maybe but it only happens on full send accel
@@mikejennings7779 you should have an exhaust back presure sensor, i would change turbo, back presusure sensor, and inlet motoro in one hit to cover a few common faults at once.
Did mercedes resolve this issue re the oil cooler seals and if yes when? Thinking about my 2012 R Class
@@user-bj1gi2rv9rI’m looking at a 2011 - 2013 R Class right now, any good?
Did this job at home with help from a couple of friends after being quoted £2,000 by my Mercedes Dealership.
It's a BIG job, one whole day to take everything apart and another day to put it all back together.
I'm not scared of this engine anymore!

Well done charlie! The GL is one of
The hardest ones Aswel with access, well done buddy all the best
It’s very refreshing to see people who no what they are doing I wish you were near to me.
Like somebody said. It's like watching "Open Heart Surgery" ! Gives one a real appreciation of having the specialist mechanic do this type of intricate work.
Hats off to the owner for bringing it to you and keeping this lovely car on the road.
Seeing a proper specialist, and honest, mechanic work is amazing!!! Most would cut corners unfortunately... Keep up the good work
Thanks 👍
It's like watching open heart surgery! The complexity of these things is fascinating, and if anything it's a wonder there aren't more common issues, gives you respect for the engineering involved and also how important a specialist is when it comes to cars like this.
Also, the W211 is one of my favourite cars, from a time where comfort was king. Big luxury barge of a car :) Was in Cyprus recently and 90% of all the Taxis there are W211. Taxi driver wanted me to go into business with him importing them from the UK 😂
Nice to see an OM642 💪🏼
More to come!
I have an OM642 in my C207. But I really miss the sound of the OM648 from my old W211.

@@martynm.449 yes it is thank you very much, this car actually goes to SPR for most of its work
That was very interesting. And you're the first garage I've seen that uses a procedure manual built from experience with the parts included to make sure nothing is missed from the job. It must make a great training tool also. I'm surprised more garages don't use this. 11k views from 7k+ subscribers means there's a lot of sharing and recommending being done. A sure sign of a quality channel !
Thank you very much! Hopefully we will keep growing.
This is one of the best engines Mercedes made after 2000 . I've had it in many vehicles including jeeps . As long as you keep it up with preventive maintenance and change the oil every 8000 km it runs and runs and runs ... as long as you're not scared to do some stuff yourself , it's not really expensive . Love it , recomend , 5 stars , 10 out of 10 .
No way. The Inline 6 CDI was the last great Mercedes-Benz diesel. The V6 diesels suck.
@@closer71 why is the V6 the bad engine? because it is compact inside some cars or what? The inline 6 did have some issues right?
@@MoesKeckeEcke Because he's parroting internet stories. The v6 is more sensitive to bad maintenance compared to the older i6, that's true, but that's about it. It's only issues are with the oil cooler and the flaps getting stuck, but the flaps can be cancelled with a resistor and the oil cooler can be kept an eye on. I've seen fleets of sprinters with this engine, all around 650-800k km and still running. Some oil leak here and there, but still ran strong. 1 went over 1 mil km before being finally retired, but not because the engine was bad, but because the truck bed and inside the cabin was getting really worn out.
Sorry but I had an E320 Bluetec with the 642 engine and it was dreadful. In the span of one year:
New swirl motor (twice)
Oil cooler seal (twice because the dealer screwed up the installation)
New turbocharger
Three new fuel injectors
New motor mounts
New intake manifold
Numerous oil leaks.
Car was serviced at the dealership at the correct service intervals. They never did fix the real problem. Car ran fine until you needed to accelerate to get onto the interstate and the car would go into “limp home”. Twice I almost got killed by a semi truck.
Best engine? Nope!
@@em4703 No. it’s because I own two. An OM617 and the 2005 CDI. Smart ass. The V6 is a piece of shyt.
After discovering your channel and watching the videos i will definitely drive my Merc from Leeds to this garage to get it serviced. Great job guys keep it up.
I had a c350 cdi (276) before my C63 , both w204's , it was a great car , really pulled well , had to change the thermostat though at around 75K , they seemed quite common for failing
great content , really being enjoying it - thankyou
I just sold my 2012 W251 R350 Bluetec and I past your video to the new owner. Thank you for your great video!
2 other common issues I have found over the years is the PCV on the back left head faiils which allows the oil to travel down the pipe and into the "Y" pipe and then out of the large orange seal. The turbo ends up being changed thinking it's leaking oil when infact it's the PCV thats failed instead. The other one is the large green O ring in the inter cooler pipe at the top of the engine. It's either missing or not giving a proper seal.
an the big red seal that is on the Y to the turbo snail.. also usually a seal that gets hard or unsealed...
not too bad this engine
Quality lads & the reason I will never take my Mercedes anywhere else!
Very informative, i really like your attention to detail top notch. I like your aluminium linkage upgrade for the swirl flaps and inlet motor replacement, i would not get the same attention to detail at my local Mercedes specialist. Great work!
Great video, as always. Very interesting and informative. Keep them coming.
Love your content, keep up the great work!
Nice job. Now I’m glad I have the OM648 inline 6. :) On that I have replaced the heat exchanger seal in half an hour.
Ive watched thousands of videos on TH-cam. But I have not ever seen one as honest and thorough as this one. "Saving the customer thousands", .....lol.....That does not happen these days! I live in the United States and have a 2009 E-320 Bluetech that I love and have had no issues with at all. But I am retired and live on a fixed budget. Im trying to service my vehicle myself when I can. So I appreciate you taking the time to make this video. It helps more people than you realize. I would never attempt a repair of this magnitude but it showed me the warning signs, and whats to be expected if it happens. Thanks again for taking the time to make the video and being honest......Take care.... (New subscriber also) Prost!

big thanks for the link, ill go buy them and change everything on my glk 320. thannnnnnnks a lot.
Great Job,and forward thinking for sure
Looks like the owner has neglected a lot of regular maintenance
All the best cheers Frank
Amazing! How tightly packed are all those components! If that was me, I would be looking for those washers and nuts that are making a bid for freedom. When I was 21, I tried cleaning and rebuilding a Stromberg carburettor on my Hillman Imp, without realising I had lost a washer down the inlet manifold - expensive mistake! Respect to you and your team!
Why buy a diesel car they are most unreal able cars and everybody with anykind of brain knows did .petrol cars the way to go.
When I done mine I removed the intake swirl flaps from manifolds with pliers and for turbo only the actuator I changed to the corect G227 I think code, purple gaskets are made of viton which should last longer ,not hard job but long time and yes change all gaskets clean all carbon and should be ok. Good video.
im so glad channel found it in australia, your customers must be so happy ,what a bout a branch workshop in sydney australia ,we need one.

I too do many jobs on Rover 75's which the owners don't even know about , we find many faults which they were not even aware of ⚠️
They will only thank you when they have not been let down by the car 5 years later 😅
Yes we replace as we go.
Haha we do all sorts don’t we that go unnoticed. But it’s a nice feeling for us when it’s back together knowing we have done what we can to make it the best we can.
Great video and a Really interesting watch
I have all the faults you’ve covered on my ml320, I had the oil cooler done a year and a half ago, at over a £1000 , but it would appear that my mechanic stitched me up it is now leaking water and a bit of oil not as much oil as before, so it’s lying in my driveway now doing nothing , being a pensioner I can’t afford to get it done again, I also had a new turbo fitted 4 years ago and the car started the kangaroo bit when I accelerated hard, but again couldn’t get anyone to diagnose the problem at the time, 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ but thanks for your video very informative cheers 🙏👍👍👍
Great stuff, this video has been really helpful as my grand Cherokee has the Mercedes 3.0 v6 OM642. 👍

So glad my Merc mech advised me to avoid these engines and the v6 petrols. I’ve got a R129 SL320 straight 6. He told me to avoid the V12 as it would cripple me financially. Wish I’d bought the R129 SL72

As a precaution you can place a piece of thin rubber under the plastic intake pipe, then if leaks occur the oil will exit down the outside of the turbo not leaking into the swirlmotor thru its connector. Also use the revised black rubber skal on plastic inlet.
Top work yet again 💪🏻
Legend!
Great video!
The other " while your there" job to do is replace the O ring on the EGR cooler plumbing where it pushes into the inlet manifold. (7.10)The other end of the cooler from the flange. I had to do this whole job because that O ring failed and leaked coolant at a huge rate. Within a couple of days of first seeing a leak under the car the engine wouldn`t hold any coolant. This was an OM642 in a Jeep with only 140k on the clock. Good excuse to do the Oil cooler seals before they leaked so no big mess in the engine valley to clean up.
Very informative video, we have a C350 AMG estate with the V6 engine which needs stripping down 😕 so looking to sell it on as now have a replacement car, wish we lived closer to you as would love to see it on your channel!
What's the issue with it, and what year? Looking for a 350 estate but want a face-lift model.
Cam chain we think, it’s a 2013, 62 plate
I have the early stages of this issue on my ML350. I live down south but think I'll make the trip north just to have it looked after by someone who knows what they are doing!
An oil catch can circuit between CCV & turbo inlet would reduce substantially amount of oil that cascades down into valley from batwing turbo inlet seal. In my opinion, that is true source of most car om642's oil leaks. It soaks swirl flap motor, splashes all over turbo pedestal & then pools around oil cooler before draining through that weep hole in valley near bell housing. These issues don't really exist on 642s from Sprinters because they have a much better air intake system & larger oil pan that can accept 5 more quarts of oil. Every time I see another om642 oil leak video, I thank my lucky stars that I still have an om648 w211 on the road.
I am in Texas USA and on the subject of the OM642, it would be great to hear your comments on the Bluetec Settlement. I know that MB had to settle in the UK and Europe so I'm sure you're familiar with this. Thanks!
Very impressed with this channel and the attention to detail. Thanks for your efforts.
Well done guys. Mine 2011 350 CDI CLS have done 83000 miles and I believe at one point, I will have the same problem.
I believe that from 2010, Mercedes started factory-fitting the new upgraded (purple) oil cooler seals to all new OM642 engines, so you should actually be ok. At least with the oil cooler problem described here!
I think you should explain to the customers what you do and why you do it, like in this video.
They’ll appreciate you more for it.
Some do. Some don’t 😂 we try.
At first, I thought that you were going to be working on a failed radiator/trans oil cooler which was what put paid to my E211 270 transmission - good old Valeo rads! Enjoyed this one though!
Yea used to do a few of those back in the early 211 days. Think I still have the test kit to test the trans fluid
@@sprautos The only time that I have ever traded in a car knowing that it had a fault - to the dealer that sold it to me 18 months earlier. That 2003 E class was the most unreliable car that I have owned!
Will be taking my GLB to you guys for servicing soon
Great video guys, it would be nice to know a rough costing for this type of job since it’s a popular fault. Gives us a heads up so to speak😂😂
This job would cost you £1500 without the turbo, more towards 2.5k with a new turbo.
I have the same engine in my 2012 w204 and I believe it needs the valve stem seals replaced, how much extra would it cost, and do the heads need to come off to get to the valve stem seals. Thanks for the great video.
RE the swirl flap rod, great when you get one over on the Manufacturer who won’t just sell the part you need but the whole assembly 😀
Haha it is good your right. You get a nice feeling knowing you’ve saved a good few quid
Very informative video well done! This engine was part of so many merc models and variations. Why do you think they went back to straight 6 ones? Is it just cost to make?
I’m really not sure, I’m
Presuming it was emissions related, the v6 cdi was a nice smooth torquey engine.
I wonder why they move on from many engines at times 😂🙈
Beware: genius at work.
😂🙌
This vid gave me flashbacks of when I did the cooler seals on my R class. It was fortunate that I did it during furlough as it took me a couple of weeks (a lot of that was waiting for parts though). I found the previous owner had done the resistor mod to delete the swirl flap motor. I took the opportunity to reinstate the flaps with a new motor and an aluminium rod kit. The previous owner had also fitted a chineseium actuator to the turbo but I ordered a genuine refurbed one from the states.
One little mod I added was I added a shroud made from an old drinks can to cover the swirl flap motor as even though I was replacing the turbo inlet seal, I have only ever known them to leak. The shroud is shaped to guide any oil that drips down behind the flap motor and into the V. I'd be curious to know if you have a definite fix for the red seal leaking?
Well done, there not easy on an r class, it’s probably the hardest one along side a Vito. So well done, plus you’ve addressed loads of other issues.
you thing if they install a catch can, it will stop all that oil in the intake and going into the turbo?
Questions out the box. Can fabric a oil cooler out sited. And fuel filter out side. ? Love to know possible. For everyone. God bless 👍
Mick Australia 🇦🇺
Do you clean the swirl flap and valve ports from the carbon deposit?
Hi Sam!
I have a 2011 W212 E350cdi,with the OM642 engine.
I had these jobs done(oil and turbo) and the car works amazing.
My question is,the car has now 191.000 miles, should i worry about the distribution chain?
When the chain gets replaced or it doesn't need to?
Also, how often does that oil cooler job gets done?
Amazing videos, keep up the good work ,only a few people will do what you do,taking care of the car and the owner's poket👍 👏
If the chain starts to stretch you will get a rattle on start up lasting around 3 seconds.
There isn’t an interval the chain but when it rattles that it letting you know
It wants a new one.
Oil cooler hasn’t really got a pattern. I’ve seen it happen at low miles and also not leak until high miles.
While you are in the "Valley of Death" the injector seals can be done.
The seals from the Honda 2.2 diesel are the same size but do a better job than the Mercedes ones as they are slightly softer and seal better .
A very strong engine, I had a 320 and now a 350, fortunately never had the oil leak issue (Yet), but the 320 did have the swirl flap issue!
Lovely to see Sam and John doing the job properly. Most garages would likely only tie the flaps open and make do.
I speak from experience!
Keep doing what you do, and as you do SPR.
See you in March.
👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for such a candid video and congratulations on your customer-focussed ethos. If it were your money, do you think the four cylinder is a better choice for the E-class in terms of long term ownership? I'm concerned it might be under powered and over-stressed. Best wishes, James.
I think if I needed a 211 as a workhorse car yes I would probably go for the 646 engine 4 cylinder diesel, its not going to set the world on fire 0-60mph but it will tick along all day with less issues. And is actually a pretty smooth engine.
@@sprautos Thanks. Its so difficult to resist the temptation to go for a smoother, more leggy 6pot, despite the legacy oil seal issue.
Great work guys! Any chance of getting a list of parts /gaskets /orings like you have the magic folder listed here ? W211 owner with OM642 (225000miles ) perfect running condition never had the issue above but trying to stay in top of things always:)
The list is to long 😂 if you search the web there are lists knocking about
I have a 2011 e350 with latest om642 engine 265hp.
250'000km and I changed only the thermostat
I think the latest iteration I have is much more robust, with all these problems solved.
What is total cost of the replacing parts? I have some leakage somewhere of fuel on top messing around stuff. But then you need to get to fueljets its apart anyway so i consider this as well
Hello guys what type of coolant did you used?
Why did you change the turbo?
Just like I had. (Turbo fault CLK CDi)
Regards from Jase, best wishes to you all.
Exactly the same car and same issue on my 320cdi. But my chap had no clue and fixed the Gearbox (
I have the same surging intermittent as only does it every so often from what I have gathered from different forums it could just be the turbo actuator needing replaced and not full turbo unit?
Yea good chance it’s just the actuator. In our case we wanted a full turbo because of the high mileage of the car and to supply a good warranty
Help. My 2006 ml320 (new used engine) is spewing out alot of white blueish smoke. Injectors, fuel pump, pcv valve, intake seals were replaced. Has a 2020-1 code (low fuel rail pressure) but I'm not sure that's what's causing the white smoke. My mechanic just can't figure it our and he says injectors are fine. No leaks
Did you do a full clean of the inlet manifold, looked full of carbon, or is it not recommended?
We do the best we can with the time we have. If we cleaned everything until it looked brand new it would double the labour.
Hi , my engine is shuddering like this on acceleration and is dangerous when overtaking. How much is the job for exactly what you did to this car ?
I have this issue on my ML280cdi (OM642) I had the back pressure sensor fault, my dad who's an ex mechanic thought he'd sorted it. He's 74 bless him, if I'd known this earlier I wouldn't have had him do what he did to try and solve it. I'll be booking it in here and getting it sorted 😢wasted around £200 on parts as it's started again with the kangaroo hops 😩
Well it won’t all be a waste as if he has replaced the back pressure sensor we would have recommend that also anyway. Good on him for Giving it a go. And it caught me out the first time also.
Hi.Can you please tell me why during accelaration my OM642 release dust/ash light white smoke behind ? Coolant leak in combustion chamber so called ? WHere to look for that leak ??? Thank You.
OEM 642 badboy engine 👌👌
modern cars have so many issues designs are poor from seals and wet timing belts to timing chain guides so so poor the modern customer is forced to go to garages and with so many ECU requiring restting once a componet is replaced but the big boys thrive on this
Great video. What did this job cost, out of interest? I’m looking at buying a 320 CDI so would like to know in case it needs doing.
Oil cooler job without turbo is about £1500
Why is there so much oil getting in the turbo? I understand the turbo seal leaking places oil on the flaper motor, but wouldnt cause the intake to be full of oil sludge.
On my second one of these engines. Current whip has 28k on it.
Are the later oil seals more robust?
Lovely wafty engine with plenty of go
It’s a great engine plenty of power/torque
I would like to think so but time will tell I suppose.

what are the years having these problems ....is the s350 2014 model is ok to buy or it has the same issue
All 642 c6 cdi all suffer the same at some point
turbo seal is not a 1st problem, pcv valve is a first problem releasing that oil, pcv valve replace interval 30-40k miles
Hey mate came across your channel.... My grandad passed away recently and he left me his W211 v6 E Class 2005 and it has been stood about 4 years since it broke on him.... he took it to a local "meredes" specialist and the issue was a sensor on the driver front wheel which they made out they fixed but when the car was returned it was then flagging a SBC , ESB on the dash.... my plan is to gradually do it up as a summer project but my question to you is could the sensor on the front wheel be causing the electronic issues and flagging up these faults or could the entire SBC unit be faulty... i have read they have a limit on how many times it can be used before you have to flash them.... just looking for abit of advice really... cheers
First off sorry to hear that about your grandad. And good on you for wanting to get the car back up and running.
It’s very difficult to say without diagnoses and investigation but hear is what advise I can give you.
Abs sensors have to be genuine, Mercedes don’t like none genuine sensors and I’ve never had any luck with them, make sure you buy from mb dealer as there are lots of fake on eBay.
On the front wheel bearing there is a seal which is also the abs pick up ring that can go faulty if the fault is still flagging on that same wheel the sensor was fitted, our SLk video we did will help you with what I’m explaining.
SBC pumps can and do go faulty and yes do have a shelf life. With SBC faults you usually get service brake visit workshop in white on the dash or red staying stop vehicle with massively reduced brake pressure.
It really needs to be diagnosed and some
Time spent with it to pin point exactly but hope this may help.
All the best 🙏
Hi. May i ask what is your opinion of the swirl motor delete using a resistor? I noticed you put oil in the filter housing too. I was told to do this by a Jeep mechanic.
I personally prefer to just fix it properly, I think the delete is ok for a temp fix if your short of funds. Garages wouldn’t supply any warranty with the resistor mod. So it all depends what you want and what the customer expectations are I suppose.
Yea always bang a ltr or so down the filter housing helps stop a dry start.
@@sprautos Thank you, i appreciate you answering my questions. This engine is really well suited to the Grand Cherokee. Plenty of low end torque.
hello I have a question please Is it possible to put an engine v6 on a Mercedes viano ?
Are these engines all the same om642 ??
Thank you
they do have slight differences so I'm not sure if an e class 642 will go into a v class without any issue
Great video. On average what mileage show I get this done? . I have a e350 2010 59k. I would rather do it / preventative maintenance. How much roughly is this job?
It cost about £1500 I would do it when it needs it. I’ve got cars with over 150k and still
Dry and yet others at 100k and need doing, there is no pattern to it really.
To get as bad as this one it’s taken years being left and ignored.
Ive just started getting black smoke coming from my e270 cdi avengarde , the AA said its the turbo. Any thoughts. Much appreciated. It's a 2003 year.
Clean the mass air flow/flows maybe? It worked for me :)
Hi, just find your video, very nice and clean work. I own a W211 E320 with this engine, and i have que same problem as shown at 1:25 but at 1900 to 2200rpm and sometimes only above 3300rpm. Its not always present, for exemple if i reset the computer i have no problem for about 100km...
The flap motor is brand new but not the plastic parts on the inlet manifold, but the flaps moves well.
The EGR is new as its pressure sensor. No fault exept the exaust back pressure sensor.
After watching your video i think that my problem is with the turbo but i am not sure, and this part is very expensive (3250€ here) so...
Do anyone had the same problem as me ? Do you think it could be the turbo ?
Im struggling with this for month now, seen 3 mercedes dealers about it and they didn't fixed it at all (but sure took my money)
sounds like a turbo fault for sure, and also with you have a back pressure sensor fault which is a good indicator, for a cheaper fix you could replace the turbo actuator on its own, part numbers are very specific on those things so you have to be carful. good luck.
What happened to the mercs from the 1970 to the eighties that went 300,000 miles or more without problems
Excellent work, preventive maintenance is the cheap way to maintain a good car, good to see. Isn’t it criminal that Mercedes and others shout about sustainability and how they work for recycling parts, yet don’t make a simple connecting rod for the inlet, throwing the whole manifold away so wasteful!!! Should be an EU law against it, my 2013 C class coupe front callipers have a Mercedes name plate that covers the gap on side of calliper so you don’t see pads, it’s fixed by two dowels, one fell out, Mercedes said I would have to buy a new calliper to get it 😱😡just doesn’t make sense, and so wasteful !!!
prob had this quiestion multiple times but OM642 or OM648?
648 was a beast.

Where do you buy the kit to repair the intake flaps? My OM642 is at 260k miles and I've been nursing it for a bit having had to unplug sensors, used a resistor bypass for the swirl flaps, etc. to avoid limp mode but I've started to try to make it right again. Just replaced the turbo actuator and PCV and may take on the swirl flap situation next. I notice a pretty hard stutter periodically when I give it a lot of gas so wondering if maybe the swirl flaps didn't fail open. Is there a way to inspect the swirl flaps without a tear down, like with a mini camera? Just want to be sure that is likely culprit.
Repair kit if off eBay, you won’t know till you strip her down I suppose. If it’s a judder like in my video could be turbo
@@sprautos Do you generally rebuild the turbos or just buy a new one? I've taken off the shield before while installing a new actuator, can the turbo be removed from the top or is it a pretty significant tear down? I have an autel that can test some subsystems I may play with that to see if I can confirm it is the turbo acting up unless there is a simple mechanical way to activate it manually that you recommend.
