Solidus was a fantastic villain, but his mere existence was kind of a plot hole. Solid Snake had been trained by Big Boss when they were at FOXHOUND and Snake fought him at least twice, whereas Liquid had been trained by Big Boss for several years and hated him to an obsessive point. Why didn't either of them recognize Solidus as Big Boss' perfect clone during his tenure as President of the US? Didn't they even suspect it?
My guess would be that during his presidency, his appearance was altered *just* enough. The Patriots were about absolute manipulation and that wouldn't be a stretch for them.
According to the metal gear encyclopedia and the novelisation, he wore suits that were too big and wore heavy layers of make up and was kept underweight and frail, hence why he needed the exoskeleton suit that he wore in the big shell. It's kinda hard to tell what is canon and what isn't when it comes to that encyclopedia and the novels... Especially the graphic novels, they were an absolute mess

MGS2 and Death Stranding are my favourite Kojima projects because of said "flaws and oddities". I love the rest of his work as well but they don't hit as hard as those 2 for me
Personally, I’d consider the game’s themes and Raiden’s arc. Raiden’s arc, like Solid Snake in MGS1, is learning the truth and learning to fight for an idea bigger than yourself. President Johnson wanted to create a legacy, be a good President and be remembered, but the Patriots didn’t need that from him. You have to remember that for all of MGS2, all Raiden is, is a pawn. Even that final cutscene acknowledges the Patriots won today, and while Solid Snake offers his condolences, he gives Raiden the choice of fighting on for something he can believe in; destroying the Patriots, or he can go and lead a normal life of ignorance, but his time as a simple cog in the machine is over.
When I first played this game and when I finally beat it for the first time long ago it was mind blowing for sure. Hideo Kojima is one brilliant story teller and it shows by the Great Metal Gear franchise and other great games he's also made. This scene explains that the patriots aka the bankers, corporatons, central bankers own the usa and so do the wealthy elite. Metal gear solid 2 taught me quite a lot about politics and a few other topics as well. This scene is powerful and one of the best scenes in the whole game.
You thought this is spine chilling? Watch the speech between the JD AI and Raiden towards the end. What the AI explains in that scene is terrifying to say the least.

Metal Gear Solid 2 is a game that the world wasn’t ready for, we weren’t skeptical enough as a people. But now, after years 9/11 coverups, seemingly endless meaningless war in the Middle East and being raised with countless conspiracy theories (whether true or bs) we start to understand the message Kojima was sending all the way back at the start of the new millennium. We are now living in the predicted future that is so full of fake news/online overuse that people’s digital footprints have become so big that we often can’t tell real from fake. MGS1 will always be the most nostalgic for me, I think 2 has become the true masterpiece both in gameplay/presentation (which it always was) but now also in its narrative.

The same reason nobody recognises Clark Kent as Superman in DC comics. Imagine living in the word of Metal Gear during the political career of George Sears, some cookie cutter charismatic white guy. I think he means basically, that once free will is gone even rebellion to the governing body can be crafted into controlled opposition. What appears to be an organic movement masquerading as the new solution, is actually the same people as before, but with new clothes. Arguments are crafted for the populus and handed out like brochures to specific groups, like scripts to a play, resulting in picking sides, and further dividing us, subsequently making us much easier to control, and further pulling us away from any potential organic revolution by the people. Metal Gear Solid 2 is a game that the world wasn’t ready for, we weren’t skeptical enough as a people. But now, after years 9/11 coverups, seemingly endless meaningless war in the Middle East and being raised with countless conspiracy theories (whether true or bs) we start to understand the message Kojima was sending all the way back at the start of the new millennium. We are now living in the predicted future that is so full of fake news/online overuse that people’s digital footprints have become so big that we often can’t tell real from fake. MGS1 will always be the most nostalgic for me, I think 2 has become the true masterpiece both in gameplay/presentation (which it always was) but now also in its narrative.

I think he means basically, that once free will is gone even rebellion to the governing body can be crafted into controlled opposition. What appears to be an organic movement masquerading as the new solution, is actually the same people as before, but with new clothes.
