We in the military used nylon stockings or pantyhose to help maintain our shine when out and about. Back in the day we old heads had to have a mirror shine when out of our work area and so the nylon allowed us to keep our shine all day.
When I was in the Navy. using a lighter to soften a coat of wax was the express method of filling the pores of the leather with wax. You usually would start a shine with that. Saliva makaes a more lubricating solution than your water/alcohol mix. Took me back to boot camp for a second there.
@@Olyfrun Yeah, you apply a thick coat of polish, light your lighter and then pass the shoe (inverted) with the polish back and forth through the flame to 'gently' soften the wax. The whole idea behind a great shine is working the polish into the grain of the leather.

@@Olyfrun I think the fabric used to work the polish has a lot to do with the end result. Synthetic fabrics of of the 70's (when I was in the Navy didn't exist so we used a plain white 100% cotton t-shirt. They're soft, non-scratching, and take the polish well. I've though some of the newer micro-fiber cloths, like you use for glasses or tv and phone screens might be nice finishing cloth, but its been 20 years since I needed to polish a pair of shoes. Speaking of which buff should be done with a completely separate cloth from your polishing cloth.

When I was in the OTC, we were issued black wingtip brogues with really deep pebble-grain, and had to mirror-shine both the wingtip and the heels in time for the Remembrance parade. Nobody showed us how to deal with this kind of grain, and it’s an absolute nightmare to use enough layers of polish to fill the bumps without either a) filling in the medallion or b) the polish cracking off in the wing where your foot bends the shoe. I ended up sitting down with my ex-army dad and the process went something like this: 1) wear them in well. Tape your feet if you have to and wear them every day until they conform to your feet, bend in the right places and the sole is well scuffed. 2) strip off any existing polish. 3) gently heat an old spoon and very, very carefully use the back to press the pebble-grain and flatten them along the wingtip toe panel & heel cap. 4) use a really good conditioner, buff, then leave in a warm place and come back another day. 5) lots of thin layers of black polish (NOT parade gloss - it cracks too easily in the wings) applied with fingers until the remaining pebble-grain pattern is mostly filled in. Leave in a warm place every now and then for the polish to dry/solvents to evaporate. 6) basically the entire process shown in the video (but with a damp cotton ball). The only parade gloss-type product was the very, very final layer after the mirror was finished. I wore those for every parade for 4 years, just buffing up and adding another speck of polish here and there. Even when the polish did eventually crack in the wings, it was just the upper layers that cracked, and it was fairly easy to get back with just a little work. Shame I had to hand them back when I left - every new recruit got a new pair, so goodness knows where they went after we returned them.
That’s brave using the hot spoon on dry leather - I always put fresh polish on to lube the spoon as it works the leather. Just rescued an expensive but very worn and scuffed bicycle saddle like this, which had a fairly thin layer of leather. Nice and smooth now.

Nice work. We used to have to shine our boots in the Army in my day. Black leather combat boots. I got to a point where I could shine the whole boot into a high mirror shine. Theres a few tricks most people don't know like using water and heat , and now I can shine all of my boots and dress shoes, weather it be black, or brown leathers.
I'm veteran from Pakistan Army. In Pakistan Military Academy bearers used to polish and Glass shine our shoes. Any one just short of perfect shine has to attend extra drills at the cost of weekend leave.

I've had the same degree of shine using this technique on my brogued shoes. I didn't have a close enough color creme polish & wax for my liking, so I used clear creme polish & wax.
Preston, I don't have the money to buy the more expensive saphir products so I have settled witht eh beaute du cuir creme surfine and the pate de luxe both from that collection. just using those products could you please do a tutorial. i can't afford to buy any more products and I can't seem to get a good shine.
In basic training and in OCS we used 5-day Deodorant Pads on top of a generous coat of wax. The stuff melted the wax and left a mirror shine in less than 2 minutes.
I polish my shoes with good shoe polish and then simply apply silicone shine on the shoe. It gives mirror-like shine and waterproofs the leather as well while retaining essential moisture.

I recently got a new brown and black pair of shoes. My question is, when you get new shoes and want to mirror shine, should you use go over the whole shoe with a few layers of pate de luxe first? Or just leave the shoe as it comes and focus on shining? Thanks in advance!
What are your thoughts on just using neutral colored wax? I guess I just am trying to conserve on the amount of wax I buy. Especially if not wanting to affect a dye or patina. Good or bad strategy?
It can totally work, especially if you aren’t attempting to obtain a hardcore mirror. The color really just helps add depth and extra color to the shoe.
Very very impressive indeed. One question though, my monks are over two years old now and still in great shape. However, the light tan brown colour has faded away a bit and I am not sure how can i add that original color polish to them and restore them again. If anyone has any recommendations do let me know.
Leather shoes do need to be correctly polished and done often. I know the lighter trick, but it can char the leather and the stich. I use a good soft brush and a cloth with the best wax polish of the shoe color. Spit and shine is better than alcohol and water any day. I still polish all my leather shoes once a week and even do my belts and I can still bounce a coin off my bed... Lol.
*Preston, What is the ratio of water to alcohol that you use?* We used the lighter trick _occasionally_ in the Army but then we also ONLY had Kiwi. I still have my class A dress shoes from 1989 and I pull them out and put some German made 'leather grease' preservative on them every few years.
I don’t feel bad now, lol. I still have my jump boots from 1992, for my Class A’s. I strip them down and recondition them every year right before All-American Week. We are definitely showing our age, lol. The water to alcohol ratio is 50:50.

I thought I was the stuff at graduation, only to have a reality check when I got orders for Campbell/101st, and never wore that particular pair of low-qs again (outgrew them in the 3 years of wearing jumps with class A's). I transfered to the Guard after that, and just polished up the GI- issued low quarters to a high, high shine, since I only needed to wear them once every 2-3 years by that point.
Those white dots shown at 8:51 I can't get rid off with anything. I've tried heat gun, hair dryer, and a flame like you did in this tutorial, and it just doesn't work. That usually happen with deep grain leather, though, the type that doesn't shine naturally.
Maybe someone can help me...I recently bought Saphir Medialle D'or (light brown, #3) and attempted to shine my favorite shoes...Walnut AE McAllisters. After shining, it was almost like they were no nicer than before. This is the first time I used a Saphir product. It is like Kiwi liquid "leather lotion" gave a better shine. It was almost like the leather did not want to shine. (BTW... I was not looking for a mirror shine). Let me know if you have any tips or any coaching. THANKS!!
Hey! I have the same shoes and used the same cream as you. I used saddle soap first to clean, then the Saphir renovateur then the cream. I didn't get a bright sheen but it added more lustre to my shoes. I believe if you want more of a shine you need polish.
In the British armed forces this is called bulling and we use black kiwi parade gloss Polish and bee’s wax and the same technique you showed . Sorry to say but that shoe is nowhere near shiny enough bye our standard , but still a good job 👍 👍👍

I personally use several trained ants who's tiny legs apply wax evenly avoiding broughing holes before I take over, works every time and only costs me a little sugar to pay for their services.
@@EnlightenedRogue24 - Could be, but I was thinking that the toe box/cap has a slightly more elongated shape than AE, which are more rounded. The medallion and broguing are all consistent with strands, though, I agree.
Outdated and impractical. In 2021, where most of us are using smartphones, a simple spray and wipe with Turtlewax Seal & Shine and microfiber cloth will give the same look that’ll last much longer (up to 3mth) and you dont have the archaic issues of buildup of wax layers and cracking of those wax layers especially around the cap area.
I don't understand the point of the mirror shine as you are basically changing the look of the toe part of the shoe so the rest of the shoe now looks different.
The terminology of your products is killing me. I'm from South Africa and Iwould to get these products you're using. An example I believe Wax=(polish in South Africa). What alcohol are you using.
When men wear a pointed toe shoe like that, they end up damaging and deforming their feet. I hope shoe manufacturers make wider toed shoes in the future.
Hey Michael. You can certainly damage your feet if you don’t not wear the proper brannock size but modern dress shoes are incredibly comfortable and come in wide widths to fit any foot correctly.
Why do you use a perfectly shinny shoe to demonstrate how to mirror shine? Wax is not recommended by proper Engly shoe makers as it might dry out the leather.
I coat the medallions with clear epoxy and cure with a heat gun. No rubbin', no buffin', no nothin'. Never needs polishing. Shines for the life of the shoe. The End.

For the final stages I also switch to cotton wool damped with water to apply the polish (sparingly) to get the deep mirror finish.

It's actually the trick is put wax layer on layer and set that layer with cold water and cloth will shine up wax surface.

how to clean the brogues if there's debris trap inside and it can't brush out?
Leather shoes do need to be correctly polished and done often. I know the lighter trick, but it can char the leather and the stich. I use a good soft brush and a cloth with the best wax polish of the shoe color. Spit and shine is better than alcohol and water any day. I still polish all my leather shoes once a week and even do my belts and I can still bounce a coin off my bed... Lol.

In 2021, where most of us are using smartphones, a simple spray and wipe with Turtlewax Seal & Shine and microfiber cloth will give the same look that’ll last much longer (up to 3mth) and you dont have the archaic issues of buildup of wax layers and cracking of those wax layers especially around the cap area.
I don't understand the point of the mirror shine as you are basically changing the look of the toe part of the shoe so the rest of the shoe now looks different.
The terminology of your products is killing me. I'm from South Africa and Iwould to get these products you're using. An example I believe Wax=(polish in South Africa). What alcohol are you using.

Hey Michael. You can certainly damage your feet if you don’t not wear the proper brannock size but modern dress shoes are incredibly comfortable and come in wide widths to fit any foot correctly.
But, but...you never spit on them. That's how I learned it in boot camp.
Why do you use a perfectly shinny shoe to demonstrate how to mirror shine? Wax is not recommended by proper Engly shoe makers as it might dry out the leather.
I coat the medallions with clear epoxy and cure with a heat gun.
No rubbin', no buffin', no nothin'.
Never needs polishing.
Shines for the life of the shoe.
