I love the TCR. But for me the fact that you can ALWAYS just rudely stomp on the gaspedal and have traction makes the R superior.
But above 100 km/h the TCR is superior, hence the Golf R's plus of power which is party dissipating in heat at the powertrain even the back wheels are not engaged.
With good tyres and warm and dry conditions even from a non rolling start the advantages of the 4 wheel drive are minimal. VW have to power up their 2.0 TSis to make advantage. But they prefer to milk their customers instead of advancing their engineering.

I got the TCR and that’s exactly what I experienced. It’s a little bit faster than the Golf R when it’s rolling and in my opinion a bit more fun on the road. But you surely feel the lag of traction from 0-100.
It's easy for me as I've got a wagon, so its the R. As it is, I quite like the AWD and as I don't track it, which ever is faster 100-200 is a little irrelevant.
Perfectly put Sito343 👍🏻 I test drove both the R and TCR and ended up purchasing the TCR. As its just more fun as well as more heritage, being GTI. The R was so good and so safe that I found it underwhelming.
@@CM.243 Irrelevant?? Are u out of or mind? 100-200 is way more important than 0-100. 0-100 can be affected by traction, bad shifting(if manual) ... 100-200 shows car's true capabilities. If 100-200 is good, 0-100 must be good as well. It doesn't mean the opposite. U can have good 0-100 time and bad 100-200, or car can't even reach 200...and that fucking sucks, but if 100-200 is good everything is great.

Having owned my 2020 Golf R 7.5 for 3 months now, I can honestly say it is the best car I have ever had. Such a complete all round vehicle.

Let me speak relative to South Africa, the R is more common and doesn’t have the look the TCR does, the TCR was limited to just 300 here. I just picked up mine this past weekend, low mileage from a dealership and it’s a true drivers car

The 1 thing i like about the tcr is that is looks pretty agressive when its stock the r doesn’t and thats sad in my opinion Bcs the r is such à great car but you need to spend alot of money to make it look agressive
Both great cars , but the the only Golf that I even considered and did buy is the R . Wait until you tune them both to high bhp and the R will put the power down much better 👍🏼
Very true. A lot of people tune these cars , not sure about TCR owners but possibly , which would probably make the car worse for traction issues mind you, where as the R can be tuned to a Stage 2 and still get that traction and get 0-60 times into the high 3's. Plus its great for winter time. So it comes down to what someone is wanting to have but I do like the add ons that the TCR offers

Exactly. You're looking at about 10% loss for FWD, maybe 12-13% for RWD and 15-20% for AWD depending on the system.
People tend to really underestimate this loss.
also around 70kg additional weight for haldex awd.
What i don‘t get at it: Why is this loss so big compared to the TCR? I mean, the Haldex clutch disables the rear wheels when it seems unnecessary, doesn’t it? So it‘s at some point after the launch a FWD too just heavier or not? You can for example measure the power of a haldex „awd“ VAG-car on a non AWD Performance test bench by just pulling a plug of the haldex. (Sorry for my English)
XcorpioN that’s exactly what I thought. At around 110km/h the haldex just disconnects the rear wheels. And the weight difference is only 95kg but the R has 20 hp more.

TCR definitely looks better but the I’d still go for the R. I got a Gti mk7 and I can’t stand it when it loses traction on 1st gear.
Very important to get power down in 1st gear🤦♂️
Losing traction is what makes it fun and challenging. Awd is just boring, less skill involved.
Mine is APR satge 2 no traction in second gear either

On the way to school I always see a tcr and a r. The tcr sounds waaay better. Maybe it has a different exhaust idk.
It has and it’s louder than the standard exhaust of the R. The 2020 model of the TCR also gets a new Akrapovic exhaust similar to the one optional on the R. A sound comparison between these two would be awesome.
Bill Gates : do you have the Akrapovic exhaust? Because the TCR is definitely louder. On paper the Golf R with the standard exhaust has 70 dB (moving) and 78 dB (standing) and with the Akrapovic it’s 70 dB and 85 dB. The TCR with standard exhaust has 72 dB and 96 dB. I don’t know the values for the TCR with the Akrapovic but I guess it’s mainly the same.
So maybe your friends exhaust is just not driven in yet. It takes about 3000km.
The r I see is a pre facelift one so it shouldn't have an OPF.
Bill Gates: Ah right I forgot about the days without OPF:D The sound of all the 2.0l four cylinders is not very impressive imo. Even with after market exhausts it’s just limited by the engine. It’s a petty that the R doesn’t come with the 3.2l anymore. But that’s okay for me because I don’t mind the sound too much.
Yea farting sound because ECU is trimmin Fuel for TCS this sounds lit in real. Same for some 200+ hp bikes, you can literally hear the ecu fighting to get traction.

The weight savings of the TCR 'not having AWD has made it more quicker than the Golf R. So i guess the next gen GOLF 8 GTI will have this spec and a better LSD.

That’s your opinion ;) I own both cars. The TCR and the R. Both are tuned. Both stage 2 and I can say.. the R feels heavy as a tank!! You can feel that in corners and when breaking! It is a bit quicker 0-100 but The TCR is faster 100-250. The TCR also feels much more nimble and sportive in corners and under breaking! Also the TCR has a electronic slip diff which works really well on track when exit corners!! Personally I like the TCR more🙊😇
Wich car is better gti tcr or golf r???
I have 303 hp 450 Nm Mark 7 GTI 2015 (220 hp, 350 Nm stock) and I don't miss 4WD, but with the R I would go for 420, 550 Nm at least. The other thing is that I don't like the look of the R (no red line through the hood and lights) Don't know if I'll keep the car after the lease and wait for the Mk8 GTI/R (2022???) or go for A35/45 AMG. Any thoughts?

Only Model year 2020, since September you've get the Akra. I get my TCR in January fresh from Wolfsburg. Grettings from Germany. ;)
They both sound rubbish, but if I had to choose I'd take the TCR. It looks better without those silly quad pipes, and the Gti is iconic, the R isn't. I don't care much for the traffic light go as I'm not a child. The real indication of speed is when rolling, and the Gti seems a bit quicker.
