How to Paint Beach With Pastels - PART 1

- In this tropical beach painting video (Part 1) I show you how to paint the beach with soft pastels on non sanded paper. Soft Pastels are a wonderful medium to capture the brilliant light and textures of a beach landscape.
I used different, mostly softer brands of pastels in this project, and a mid tone gray sheet of Canson Mi-Teintes paper.
*Tip: use the reverse side of paper in a Canson pad - it still has enough texture to hold the pastel but it does not have that mechanical looking pattern that their official front side has.

Lana, this was fantastic! You are one of my all-time favorite, pastel artist. I’m going to share your video in my art group because you need to have thousands of subscribers on your TH-cam channel! Thank you so much. Your English is awesome and your teaching is great. blessings!!
Susan, thanks so much! You are so kind, I really appreciate it ❤️ I love your work, and your wonderful channel here is such an inspiration! Thank you!
As always Lana, you are an excellent teacher! I love how you explain why you pick certain colors. Thank you!
I'm glad it's helpful, Kat! There's a lot of logic in picking some colors over others, and it becomes more clear as we paint more.
Thank you, Lana. I truly enjoyed this lesson in both parts. Your teaching is amazing.
Thanks Audrey! I'm glad you loved the tutorial!
Great demo, Lana, you are a wonderful teacher. I really like that you talk about how & why you use certain colors. Thank you, anxious to start on Part 2.
Thanks Patti! I know how confusing color can be, so I'm trying to my best to explain it :) Enjoy Part 2!
Incredibly beautiful! Such a amazing choice of colours! Loved your video!
Glad you love the video and my colors! :)
Love this video! I really like the play of the shadows. Great colours too!
Thank you! Yes, the shadows are interesting here, definitely playing their part.
This is wonderful Lana! Thank you for posting and sharing your amazing skills!
Thanks, Bryan! Keep up posting those lovely paintings on Instagram! ❤
Lovely painting and I am looking forward to watching part 2! I believe that you have created a sweet tutorial and I am reminded of a sketch that I have done from the movie Contact Starring Jodi Foster and her drawing of Pensacola Florida! I am going to find it and perhaps even try to create a pastel painting! Thank you for this wonderful inspiration! On to part 2!
Thank you! And you are right, it's a similar feeling to the beach in that movie, I watched it years ago. This photo is actually came from my trip to St Martin, but the light, the mood is similar.
Thank you Lana. This is beautiful!! And thanks to Susan Jenkins for alerting us to your channel!!
I’m glad you liked it, Marianne! Susan is great!
Потрясающая картина. Спасибо за мастер-класс
Рада, что понравился мой урок, Альбина ❤️
Thank you Lana! I’m so glad Susan Jenkins of Monet Cafe told us about you! You are incredible! Thank you so much for sharing your talent and knowledge with us!!
Thank you Linda! I'm glad you enjoy my videos. And a big Thanks to Susan 😁❤️🌷
Thank you Lana! That was helpful. I used Canson Mi-Teintes paper when I started painting in pastel and I remember that the colors smeared quickly. I have more of a light hand now and I will give it a try again.
I'm glad this helped. Yes, give it another try. It's less expensive to practice on. And it makes us to be more mindful of all those layers 😂 It should work better now with the light touch.
Very informative. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Glad you loved the video ❤️
beautiful Lana!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for the video!
I'm glad you liked it!
Beautiful!!! Could you make new videos please??
Thanks! I hope that I'll have some time to do that soon.
@@LanaBallot Yes please!! : )
@@canadaverydry It's all about finding some time to do that, which is quite difficult lately :)
I have not had success using nonsanded paper (Canson), but I see here that you are able to get a lot of layers. Do you use really soft pastels after the charcoal application? I have a lot of the Canson unsanded paper, but never use it. I like the effect you got. Thank you for posting this video.
I usually jump right to soft pastels when working on non sanded paper. On sanded paper I first use hard pastels, but not on non sanded Canson. You also need to practice a very light touch to get more layers on it. I love sanded papers but Canson non sanded is great for studies or some quick sketches, less expensive.
Thank you. I'll try it again. I saw one artist who used the pan pastels on the Canson nonsanded paper, but I could not get them to stick to the paper at all. I could barely see them no matter how much I applied. Do you use the more textured side of the Canson paper or the other, smoother, side? Thanks. @@LanaBallot
@@reneekroyer5104 The way I paint I would use Panpastels maybe for the "dry underpainting" but usually on sanded paper. I don't think I tried them on regular Canson.
Yes, I hear you. It was Les Darlowe. He paints on TH-cam using Canson unsanded paper and he told me he has no problem getting the pastel to stick. It is a mystery to him, and to me. lol @@LanaBallot
