Lana, this was SO interesting to watch. I love the way you use some unexpected colors that work so beautifully together in the light and shadow areas. And I love the way you neutralize just a little bit of the high chroma colors at the very end for a slightly more realistic effect. I love all the varied line work you create within the rocks, making the rough texture very believable. I was wondering when you set up your original sketch how you are able to draw some of the smaller rocks and planes without getting lost in the details. That is one thing that frustrates me when I'm trying to do what looks like a complex scene with lots of shapes within shapes. And by the way, thanks again for creating these helpful tutorials!
Thanks so much for your great feedback Janet! Yes, it's one of the biggest challenges not to get lost in details ;) So I start with the larger shapes and then bring smaller details in as needed, it's easier that way.
Your demonstration is a very good lesson on working with loose strokes to shape the rocks and using colors that I would not have thought of using, based on the source photo. Somehow you have made it all work with a beautiful result!
Wow Lana, you are incredible! Just when I didn't think I could be even more impressed you blow me away...AGAIN! I'm no expert, but I never thought I'd watch a video of someone painting rocks a dozen times! Beautiful! I believe you are incredibly gifted and only hope to achieve a small modicum of skill from your excellent teaching, masterful strokes and the mesmerizing myriad of colors you use in your masterpieces! Practice, practice, practice, right? Thank you so much for sharing your amazing talent, Lana! ❤
Wow, Sharon! Thanks for the great compliment! I'm glad this video got a good response, it's just rocks after all 😁 but of course, it's all about the color. Thanks!
So beautiful. I'm struggling to accomplish something even remotely close to your amazing artwork. Ha ha, it's an expensive hobby! Thanks for the videos.
Thank you Bryan! This was actually just non sanded paper, more like sketching paper. It might be from a Canson pad, I don’t remember now. I’ve been using non sanded paper more lately, experimenting 😁
Watching this come together was fascinating. Thank you for narratives. This is an excellent video.
I love painting rocks :) Thanks!
Amazing your painting is so beautiful. Love all the colors, thank you Lana.

Another fantastic video! I love painting rocks and I learned so much watching and listening! Is this LaCarte paper?
Thank you Bryan! This was actually just non sanded paper, more like sketching paper. It might be from a Canson pad, I don’t remember now. I’ve been using non sanded paper more lately, experimenting 😁
Beautiful👌🏻
Thank you, Willie!
What is the paper you are using here?
This is regular gray non-sanded paper, like Canson (the reverse side, which is a bit less textured).
