Hi . I am 73 and have lived in Thailand for 4 years in a rural area with my gf and very near her family in a house we have built. last December i slipped in the bathroom and fractured my hip (very painful ) Local ambulance took me to government hospital ( no big private hospitals near where we live) was in hospital a week and had leg/ hip pinned internally . Hospital treatment was v good and considerate and the surgeon was fantastic. Three follow up visits to hospital. Total cost 60,000 thb or £1500 . Im telling you this to give another perspective to your story. I know from experience from when i lived in Pattaya how expensive Bankkok hospital Pattaya is

Thx for your views. The way I see it is Medical Insurance companies now have questions that the person wanting insurance has to fill out. The questions are designed so the company can and will disqualify people even when they have valid insurance claiming the insured person lied or misspoke about their pre existing conditions and or lied or misspoke about the questions themselves, and will not pay, even though the insured person was honest and forthright in answering questions. I wonder how many people would say for a major medical situation the insurance company paid out no problem and what the name of this company is.

The leading cause of death in the world is heart disease and I think you said that when you went to the two hospitals in Thailand they asked for your passport details, so you are recorded on the Thai healthcare system as someone who has a heart issue (even though you were misdiagnosed) - the likelihood of you getting any cover for heart disease I would have thought is pretty slim. You already know that you won’t be covered for anything to do with your blood clot problem.
The second biggest killer is cancer and although I don’t have any medical training, my understanding is that people generally don’t die overnight because of cancer and so you should be able to get a flight back to the UK for treatment. So, is it worth paying a big premium for cover knowing in the back of your mind that you won’t be covered for heart disease and that the insurance company will take any opportunity they can to cancel your cover. Even the ambulance driver will take a foreigner to the most expensive private hospital because that’s where they get the biggest fee and I've heard that private hospitals will provide treatment you don't really need to bump up their bill.
You need to take steps to lead a healthy life, get yourself medically tested and don’t take any unnecessary risks (skydiving and so on) while still enjoying yourself in Thailand.

You make a fair point. Back in Thailand for 12 months in October with the wife. The biggest upfront cost by far is Health Insurance. Use a local broker after getting a general idea on Mister Prakan. Used Pacific Prime in Bangkok, who were excellent. I’m 64, she’s 60. No preconditions. Realistically 5M of cover and 8000THB a day for your room is about par. Outpatient treatment is fairly reasonable but the premium isn’t much more surprisingly if you choose to include it. Took a Pacific Cross Maxima plan inpatient + outpatient 5M THB cover, no excess @ 160.500THB (£3650) for us both, which covers you all over the far east and repatriation. Took a few days for the underwriters to sign it off. A Good Company, solid cover with a decent reputation. Premium I thought was fair and reasonable. I would strongly advise anyone choosing this route however, to declare any preconditions whatsoever.

I’m firmly in the ‘you must insure’ camp. I’m 50 now and 15 years ago I was hospitalised in intensive care in Thailand for a month. And then had to be repatriated whilst still in intensive care conditions. Total cost was well in excess of £300k. Anything can happen, and I’d never be in Thailand without insurance (even with a £6k excess). Albeit I was both very unlucky; and also somewhat lucky to still be here. Get insured, no ifs, no buts. If you get in deep water over there, you’re screwed.
Best of luck with your results, and either way …. ‘Live the Dream’ 👍🏻

I'm 65, my wife is 61, we are returning to Thailand in November, so I looked into travel insurance, I checked several and the best for the two of us, for two months, with no pre-existing cover, for a single trip was £671.93. But we are going to Thailand for two months, across into Malaysia for a couple of weeks, then back into Thailand for two months. So by the time its finished, its knocking up to £1800. That's more than our flights! I've been to Thailand 10 times. Last time I got a throat infection, cost me less than £10 to get it sorted! Always had insurance, so if we don't this time, sods law!

Why dont you inquire about insurance locally when you are back in Thailand? There are companies such as Jack Levy at Macallan insurance in pattaya that could possibly offer a more competitve quite/rate/package suited to your needs, out patient / in patient coverage, what preexisting conditions you may want to have covered such as your clotting issue. I also know of a few people that are with a company called Pacific Cross in Thailand. The only thing you need to keep mind of is how the premiums increase over your age and or claims. further to this if the coverage is per case or per year. Ideally you would want a minimum of 3 million baht coverage. You might also want to check with the government and private hospitals for quotes on certain proceedures. It wouldnt chuck it all in the bin right away, I do think you may find an option that can suit your needs and budget to at least give you some piece of mind.

I hope you have good success with them. I almost went with them, and then thought to look at the Google reviews. One of the commenters pointed out that many of the positive reviews seemed to have the same grammar and syntax to them, implying that they are not legitimate reviews. I took note and came to the same conclusion. I'd been in discussion with one of their agents. I had his profile photo from facebook and noticed that in the Google reviews was a glowing recommendation from him.....the agent himself presenting himself as a client. Perhaps his post was legit, but I had my doubts as this point. The negative reviews were abysmal. I decided to pull the plug on my application with them and go with Pacific Cross for both me and my girlfriend. More expensive by about 50% over W-R, but MUCH cheaper than paying monthly in the US. I had to go with my gut on that one. I sensed some sketchiness afoot and decided against. I've not needed my insurance at all since i've been retired here, and hope that is the case for a long time.

In your livestream of Friday evening, you said that when you returned to the UK from Thailand you went straight to A&E to find out why you were so sick, you then had a blood test that indicated that you had a blood clot, then you had a scan to find out where the clot was and how big it was. I think it would be a good idea when you go back to the hospital to find out what the name of the blood test was (could be a D-dimer test) so that you can get the same test done when you return to Pattaya. This might help to put your mind a rest when you return that you won’t get into the same dire situation that you were in before. I don’t have any medical training - these are just my thoughts you might want to consider.
One of the good things about Thailand is that you can go to a clinic and get all sorts of tests done at a fraction of the price you would pay in the UK. I am prediabetic myself, so when I go to Pattaya one of the first things I do is to get a general blood test, a cholesterol test, an HbA1c test and a fasting insulin test. I know that the NHS is not going to do anything about my diabetes problem, so I have to take matters into my own hands.

You don’t crash a car then try to insure - get yourself covered in advance of any issues.
I work in health and the average cost of cancer treatment in the uk is about £35k but sometimes the treatment can go over £100k - I agree a £6k+ excess is crazy but still cheaper than most treatment.
In terms of pre-existing conditions, it’s usually things from the last 5 years that are initially excluded (bone breaks usually don’t matter as a new break would be something new).
One major thing to be aware of is related conditions are usually excluded too - simple example being, if you have high blood pressure one of the most common conditions linked to it is stroke so that wouldn’t be covered.
A lot can be linked to a clot so be careful what you sign up for, if you sign up for anything

Hi Liam , good point. ,
I had a TIA last year in April . I've had quotes and questionnaires from UK based insurance companies , i answered the questions honestly . 6 months (since the TIA ) is the critical period they seem to be interested in . If 6 months has passed the risk is normalised .Also what medication you are taking .
All quoteS i have received in the UK for a 3-months trip this winter are in the same ball park and quite reasonable .

@@steveuk8816 hopefully you’re on the mend, most companies view TIA on the lower end of the risk scale but make sure you understand what is and isn’t covered.

Why dont you apply for more credit cards while you are in the UK. Use them each month for very small purchases but keep them as an emergency bank. Then get the insurance you like if the out of pocket is 6,000 pounds use those cards to pay it. Get the healthcare then just dont pay the cards. Screw the banks your credit on those cards will be bad. But you will still have your other credit cards you didnt use that are still good. And you will be in Thailand so wont get the annoying phone calls from collectors. Think outside the box you will still be alive and gotten treatment.

My husband and I are 70 and 67 years old. We have been living in Albania for the past 4 years and are heading to Thailand in October. Life is cheaper overseas, but medical insurance has been a stressor. We were covered by Cigna Global, but I recently cancelled it. We were paying $600 per month for coverage that was inpatient only and did not cover preexisting conditions. I finally decided why pay for it? In 3 and a half years we paid them $25000 and received nothing. We are both diabetic and I figure if anything major had happened they'd have found a way to blame it on our diabetes as a preexisting. Medical care is so inexpensive overseas I don't understand why insurance costs so much. Everything we've needed we've paid for out of pocket. My husband had to see the doctor (outpatient - so not covered). The cost of the doctor visit including an ultrasound AND a free follow up visit was $50. He also had to be hospitalized once for 3 days in a private hospital. The cost for the stay including all the doctors and tests was $1200 - our deductible was $1500 so insurance paid nothing. I was hospitalized for 3 weeks in a public hospital and it was free! I still can't figure out how that happened. But all told - free was about what the care was worth - but that's another story. When I checked with Cigna about our move to Thailand they told me that our premium would go up another $150 a month - why??? As we are US citizens, to go home for treatment of anything major isn't really an option. Our medicare copays would probably be more than the cost of paying out of pocket overseas. I agree with you that private medical insurance is pretty much of a scam. Many countries require you to have it to get residency though. I see videos with 30 somethings talking about medical insurance. I just turn them off. I want to tell them, "You know nothing! Come back and talk to me when you're 65 - and that includes The Nomad Capitalist! Thanks for letting me vent my frustrations.

You say insurance is a rip off. The insurance companies do exactly what the casinos in Vegas do they play the odds and statistics. The safe and effective shots are causing so many claims many are on the verge of bankruptcy. If you are going to self insure in Thailand, make sure you budget for a complete health check up at the international hospitals. It costs about 200 quid for complete vitals and a stress test. You need to do that twice a year. And get your blood tested for cancers it costs about 60 quid. Tirbo cancer is at a 1 in a 100,000 year high right now. Its called a delta sigma nine event.

Another thing I have to say when in pattaya you are not living a very good life style parties ,booze and women are a disaster for you so why do it again
Wish you well mate but if I was you you need to change your outlook or suffer the consequences

So you'd be paying 850 gbp a year for a safety net. Let's say in 10 years you have a surgery that cost 20,000 gbp, you've paid to insurance at that point 8500 gbp then you add 6600 gbp for excess = 15,100 gbp, saving you 5000 gbp. The savings go up the higher the bill ofc. It's basically a safety net for the big disasters. - WW

I’m afraid the facts are you are high risk now, even though they discount the recent incident you still get risk scored because of it. Sorry to say, people who have 1 large incident are at more risk of others. If you are going to self insure you need a minimum of £25k and accept that it might go tits up. Finally keep an address in the uk and a footprint here, you aren’t necessarily entitled to free healthcare after being away from the country for a longtime!

    • @welshboywebby

Your not insured on motor bike its not worth paper its written on if you have a accident on your motorbike you will be to blame and you will have to pay the thai you crashed in to compensation. Even if not your fault. Because they say you shouldn't of been in thailand and it wouldn't of happened. It's your choice but don't think your going to be that lucky next time,. And remember history repeats it's self.

If you retire to Thailand and that is your primary residence (e.g long term expat) you are NOT entitled to free NHS care so guys saying oh if i ever have a problem ill just nip back to the UK and get treated on the NHS need to think again. The NHS is a free residency based service not a nationality based service. Always get proper medical insurance to cover you in the country you reside.

    • @welshboywebby

If you are a UK national living abroad and are returning to live in the UK, you will be able to use the NHS for your healthcare. You will need to complete a GMS1 form to register with a GP near your home. The first time you have treatment anywhere in the NHS you will need to bring proof that you are eligible for free healthcare. You should bring at least two of the following documents: Residence in the UK, Proof of your purchase of property or a tenancy agreement, Recent utility or council tax bill payment, UK bank account showing recent UK activity, Employment status, Payslip or letter from employer, Bank statement, Unique tax reference number, Documentation from your local job centre to show that you are receiving job-seekers allowance.
If you are not ordinarily resident in the UK, you may be charged for NHS hospital treatment. However, emergency treatment is always free and provided immediately regardless of your nationality or immigration status. Hope this clears it up for you. Yes you will get treated if you turn up at A&E but your not entitled to FREE treatment.

My friend you have learnt nothing from what has already happened to you. Self insurance in Thailand is idiotic. If you can afford the £900pa, pay it. If nothing every happens to you fine, you've only spent £900. If you end up in hospital in a coma for weeks and then need a medical repatriation flight, I would guess you are looking £50 -£100k. You can't fly home on Thai Airways cattle class if you need 24/7 care. For people on shorter trips, insurance costs peanuts, with a tiny excess, and most UK insurance companies won't insure you once you are already abroad, probably because that's where more fraudulent claims come from for people who are already sick.

    • @welshboywebby
      @welshboywebby  ปีที่แล้ว +1
