My grandpa has a 1974 and a 1976 Honda dirt bike just like this and I was needing to figure out how to clean the carb on it, so thanks for the video it was a really big help to me.

Great video! I had a SL70 and a SL100 as a kid. They were a lot of fun. We would ride wheelies and jump dirt mounds in the gravel bank. Seemed to be a cycle of break it, fix it, break it, fix it!

I cant count the times that I have done exactly what you have done here... Its basically the recipe for resurrection on all bikes left to sit for decades. Same goes for using Cream to bring back the gas tank. You have a great bike here...runs just like a Honda should! Nice job.

Enjoyed the video, worked at the local Honda/BSA/Yamaha shop from '68 to '70 as a mechanic. I remember the SL 90, 175, and the 350, but not this model. Nice survivor, and well worth repairing.

I had an old (but not quite that old) Honda single when I was a kid. The exhaust held on the same, but it also had what looked like a copper o-ring - actually a crushable, one-time use gasket - that goes between the end of the pipe and the head. If yours also needs one, there might be a little ring indentation in the head that it would sit in (presumably so you can't tighten it the pipe too much and destroy the gasket.)

    • @aussiebloke609
      @aussiebloke609 7 ปีที่แล้ว

PS: And 2 second later...you mention the copper ring yourself. When will I remember to _finish_ the video before talking? LOL

Two of my machines are '72 SL 250's which I bought twenty years ago from a fellow I had bought a Hodaka Road Toad from a couple of weeks earlier, always wanted the 350 thumper but the 250 is still a very nice ride, especially when compared to my '64 CL 72 250 and '66 CL 77 305 Scramblers which weigh close to twice as much but have always been a blast to ride too.

I have a 72 SL125. My dad found it in a scrap metal dumpster back in 1998. Brought it home, rebuilt the carb, new points, etc. fired right up. I rode it in the summers when I was growing up for about 8 years after that. It was already beat to hell when he found it, then my friends and I ran the absolute living crap out of that thing for several more years. It burned oil about as fast as you could pour it in, so we often ran it with NO OIL! Never did blow it up, it finally lost spark and is still sitting in my basement. It's unbelievable how tough these things are.

I may try to get it running again one of these days. Probably won't take much. It's not worth restoring, probably not even a good parts bike it's so far gone.

Those Hondas were tough. Like the slant 6. You could run it with no oil and it would last a while. Remember the commercials for, what was it, "Slick 50"? They ran a Mopar 6 and poured water on the rockers. Made "Slick 50" look pretty good!

Those batteries you are getting at the scrapyard look like typical fire alarm panel backup power batteries.... They seem like they will work, but they will die quickly.... The makers of those panels know that code requires them to be changed, so they typically source batteries that last "just a little longer than necessary"....

BCRBCRBCRBCRBCRBCR just do the electrolysis thing to the tank, did it to my rusty xt tank and it's worked great. Did a few rounds of it for a few hours and got the inside of the tank fairly clean.

I think you've mentioned this before but what are your nifty tie downs called/what do I search for to find them?
    THANKS!
Any idea what would cause that color (greenish?) corrosion in the carb? Wow, that's really corroded. Haven't see the whole video but will be very interested in how well the Gunk cleans it all up.

Mustie you are too far away for me to reach into the screen and give you a hand.

Totally appreciate your efforts to make us feel like we're with you in person and the after video clips showing those aforementioned efforts. Enough with the brown nosing, that honda is BOSS can't wait to see vids of you ripping it in a pit or down the road to the cabin

Been watching videos on this channel for a week or two now, looking back through older uploads and playlists. What a great channel, a definite favourite. Will not be missing any future videos - addictive viewing for those of us who thrive on this stuff.

Sweet score. Interesting fact on the older than 99 vin check. Had one of those many moons ago when I had my apartment. Still have the title. Hmm. Some liked it more then me I guess. No garage, optional insurance. Grr. Freggin thieves!

If that exhaust canister is completely gutted, it would be pretty easy to build an insertable baffle for it. Doing so would save you some bucks and you could design it to be almost as quiet as you wish.

That bike was a dream of mine when I was in high school. I had a Bridgestone 90 that I was appreciative of as a gift from my Dad - but those Hondas were perfect for scooting around trails and getting there. Such a perfectly engineered bike for the time.
