Springfield Armory M1A .308 - close up look at two things

- Here is a close up look at two points of the M1A, you may not have seen. I wanted to review where & how the cleaning supplies can be stored in the butt-stock and provide a close up look of the rotating bolt. Since these rifles are based on the M14 and M1 Garand, these are not new features, but they add to the character of these fine rifles. The Garand action was shortened to handle the new 7.62 x 51mm round .308, but they are quite similar.
The rifle is dirty since I hadn't cleaned it since it was used - it has been cleaned since! I hope this helps you learn a bit more about these guns and you enjoy watching it too!!
CORRECTION: Those two holes in the stock are for storing cigars, not cleaning supplies!
We old guys, who were issued the M14 (military version of the M1A), were well versed in the cleaning supply holes in the buttstock. We also had to know how to retract the bolt and engage the stop with just the right hand. That was part of doing a rifle inspection while at attention in formation. That swivel buttplate may have been intended for use with the full automatic version of the M14 (E2 variant with selector switch), but though I carried one, with M2 bipod, I never used it myself.
I own two M1-A's: one has a wood stock with riflescope; another has black synthetic stock with iron sights only. Thanks for the demo. I just ordered the cleaning kit from SA.
So happy I now have an M1A
Good video. I am from the time when lots of rifles had storage areas in the buttstock. I personally like this feature and think manufacturers should go back to that. The foldable plate that you place on your shoulder is actually a convenient thing. It's best used in the prone position and it just makes the weapon feel like it's connected to you. Many people feel they are more accurate when they have this plate on their shoulder..
Thanks for posting. I figured some guys didn't really know about this part. Hopefully it helped others learn some too.
Great looking Rifle, thanks for sharing a good close up.
Cool rifle, when ya pulled the bolt back sounded like the op rod and op rod spring were rubbin on the inside. Sounded like a zipper. Haha!
danielmottweiler needs lube on the roller lug
nice. I'll have to look up that kit. I hate using detachable rods because of screwing up the rifling but if that's all you got at the time then it's better than nothing.
The M1 Garand has the same 2 holes drilled in it for cleaning supplies. In one of the Band of Brothers episodes it shows "Bull" Randleman keep his cigars in there which I always thought was cool. Nice rifle and nice video. Thanks.
sureshot556 My great grandad kept loose .30-06 rounds in it.
Nice photography and lighting. For forty plus years I'd dreamed about getting an M14 and two weeks ago I "pulled the trigger", plunked down the cash and ordered one just like yours. I trained on the M14 at Ft Leonard Wood back in 1968 and this is one incredible rifle. I dragged it through sand, mud water and snow, it took a licking but kept on ticking. I could disassemble it with my eyes closed back then, and might try that again soon. One thing I must say is that if a GI called it a gun the DI would drop you for 50 push-ups or slap you up the side of the head with an M60 cleaning rod. They had a little chant that went, " This is my rifle, this is my gun , one is for fighting and one is for fun." When the DI did it he had the rifle in one had, and grabbed his crotch with the other. You get the point, we sure did? It is either a rifle or a weapon. In the Army, guns are artillery pieces.
no, that was Full Metal Jacket
The shoulder rest is for the prone position, i doubt it would help much in full auto fire unless it was fired in the prone position. it definitly helps me when im shooting prone or from the bench.
Congratulations! You'll love it. Mine is the standard model. No I don't think the kit was. Yes, mine is very hard to open...I use something to help like the edge of a pocket knife. Yes from SA - it's GI surplus, prefferred it to leather ones. It just seemed more inline with the service history of the gun to me.
@1joshjosh1 M1a is the copyrighted name for the civilian-legal M-14 clone made by Springfield Armory. The military M-14, which hasn't been built since the 1960's, is still used in combat today by US troops as a marksman's rifle alongside the standard M4 carbine, which is the shortened version of the M16, the rifle that replaced the M-14 in general use. China also produces a very good copy of the M-14 for sale to civilians in some countries. I believe they call it the "M-14S".
Beautiful rifle man. The price tag is just killer though, you practically need a second mortgage to afford one, lol.
One more thing. When we first started the training cycle we were told to go to the PX and buy a shaving brush. We soon found out that the shaving brush is the primary cleaning tool for the M14 and M16 rifles. The bore needs patches and brushes but everything else is cleaned with an oiled shaving brush. I do not remember ever using grease on the M14 although Lubriplate was used on the M1. You are correct about the butt plate "hook" used for full auto. It does help with control when firing from the prone position. Some machine guns had the same feature.
Arcs n Sparks I went through Parris Island in 1969. We did use Lubriplate on the Bolt and Roller assembly and the Operating Rod. Gun oil , WD-40 for the rest of the metal, and lindseed oil for the stock. The lindseed oil makes the wood waterproof and almost eliminates the posibility of the wood swelling. It also, over repeated use gives the wood that Marine Corp finish that I wanted. I too have a M1A and I take care of it the same as I did in 1969. AWESOME rifle! (You are correct, NOT a gun!)
boosuedon Yeah, I remember the boiled linseed oil cans. With this new M1A I worked some tung oil on the stock and I'm very satisfied with the results. Low gloss sheen. The only real nit pick I have with the rifle is the hand guard. I prefer the original government issue fiberglass items and bought one for mine. Yep, awesome rifle, and it makes me sick that the government is cutting them up.
+Arcs n Sparks I also changed my handguard.
I wish the butt plate on these guns actually completely covered the end of the stock. I hate how the edges of the plate and the stock aren't flush.
That is one beautiful gun you have there!! 5/5
All right just today I found out there may be 2 different rifles
M-1a and the M-14.If I saw a pic of your rifle a week a go I would have called it
M-14.Still a bit confused.
Thank you for this well done show and tell.
Great looking rifle.
Hey Nashi just picked up my M1a loaded yesterday! Had a couple questions. Is yours the loaded? And I have the purple dicount order sheet for extras, is that a basic cleaning kit on the sheet? Also Iam about to break my fingers in half trying to get the trap door open on the stock to look at the two storage holes! I was hoping to see if you had a hard time trying to open it. Is that the sling from S.A, I was wanting to order that also, kinda was hoping it was leather though. Thanks!
@geriatricgoonsquad Tough choice...I don't know. In pure rifle terms the M1A has the edge for the detachable magazine of up to 20. Of course the Garand has a long history of excellent & reliable service in WWII, Korea, and through today. I don't know....the Garand is nicer looking with all wood, but it a bit heavier of course.
I'll have to get back to you on this one...
There is a chamber brush, but no bore brush...arguably the most important part of gun maintenance. I don't get it?
I appreciate the video, thanks for posting.
@kalo96792 Not with En-Bloc clips, but, what you can do is take a stripper clip (the straight piece of metal with all of the bullets lined up one after the other) and shove it through the reciever into a empty detachable magazine when it is in the gun. That's why it has a stripper clip guide above the reciever (you should be able to see it, it's the thing on the end towards the butt of gun that's sitting over the reciever).
@geriatricgoonsquad That's like asking a parent which child he loves better ;). They're both OUTSTANDING rifles. I currently own a '43 SA M1 Garand and plan on getting a M1A someday.
thanks for the new info i didn't know this before
I LOVE THIS GUN!!!!!
Just ordered a loaded model. Can't wait to pick it up :)
I am sure you'll enjoy it.
@@nashi55 Absolutely loving it. I'm planning to keep it the way it is. Walnut stock and iron sight, so I can learn to shoot with iron. It's a very heavy rifle though, but slowly getting use to its unique weight balance.
@@tonycl568 Great!
Why does my slide lock unexpectedly release the bolt? This happened at the range after the range had gone cold, and the rifle chambered a round.
Could have been a disaster if a slam fire occurred. This was on a Supermatch MIA that supposedly was new in the box. Wooden stock. Bought it in Louisville KY shop around 21 years ago, and this was the first time I shot it, if you can believe it. I think this shop sold me a used gun. A friend told me the gun had been fired before, but doesn't Springfield test fire the guns?
It came with now discontinued Japanese scope with 56mm objective , turrets had about 200 clicks for elevation and windage . The scope said Springfield on it, was for "miiltary".
What is going on? Suggestions?
did the supplies come with the gun? I did not get anything other than the field manual when i got my rifle.
No - just the rifle. Ordered the supplies later.
@HurpDurr
Im pretty sure the rifles are manufactured in Genesco Il. If the reciever is cast in Brazil, its not that big of a deal. If it where in China, then it would be a big deal.
What is the clear tube tool for ? Thanks good information..👍
Grease
Oil
I'm not a self procalimed marksman, but I have been very pleased. I've shot from the shoulder & seated.
The part of the Butt that move's up is for a field jacket with a flap on the shoulder.
What a beatiful rifle!
The civilian M1A is semi-auto only. The military model, the M14, can be full auto or semi-auto.
@nashi55 i call a draw....they are the same design minus the mag changes....though i love the convenience of the m1grand mag eject and the cheap spring steel mags....
Well done. Enjoyed this vid.
@nashi55 What's the skinny on the Mossy Oak M1A's butt? Is it the same idea with the hollow tubes as this one? I have never been able to see an example and am dying to find out. Thanks in advance for replying, 45calibermedic.
@nashi55 I noticed that the buttplate hinge mounting piece is non magnetic, really odd because it seems to my old machinists eyes to be steel under the finish. It definitely doesn't seem like aluminum. (I hate aluminum in firearms, airplanes OK, but not my guns!) The buttplate itself appears to be steel.
@madjimms I got mine on gunbroker - from a dealer. I'm sure there are others out there still. The cleaning kit came from SA. They have a special deal on assessories - a coupon in the rifle box.
@nashi55
Did the 10-round box magazine come with the rifle? Mince came with 2x 20round boxes, and I am having problems finding a 10-round box. I also want to get a 5-round magazine for hunting.
Like magazine or clip? Revolver, six gun or wheel gun? Pistol or handgun? Long gun or rifle? Round, ammo, or cartridge?
I have my preference on terms used, but all of these are all used by people!
@aerodynamicband The M14 could be loaded from stripper clips what I have read. Doubt most GIs would use though. To use a scope that loader has to go.
I only see the bottom magazine 308 7.62mm version build sold "new" online. Do you know where I could get a rifle exactly like yours with all the cleaning/maintenance setup like you have? I'm not actually a current gun owner BTW.
This is my rifle, this is my gun, this is for killing, this is for fun.
Full Metal Jacket was the most retarded movie...LOL, Stripes was a better movie about the military.
Is there a way to cock the this rifle without getting the bolt locked with an empty magazine in the well?
@HurpDurr
I know their XD line is made in Croatia, but what other guns / parts are you refferring too? The M1As I have say nothing about being imported.
@nashi55 Hey, nashi55, what ammunition do you use for your M1A? In the 150 grain category.
@Alex4757 Yep, you can get some shotguns that offer a shorter rifled barrel for designed for slugs for deer You change between the longer smooth barrel or shorter rifled one. As a general rule thay are usually smoothbore though.
I guess me and Largehandgun were just talking over minor disagreements in terms. Everybody has their preferences over what term is best.
@SoCalTactical So is the m1a standard accurate enough to use as a DMR, or do you need to get a loaded or national match?
@SavageJim01 Yes - it came with one 10 rd mag. I got the 20s later.....
None taken friend. Not trying to be a jerk either, but I can't please everyone! I felt the general term was acceptable.
I understand your view and have my own preferences too. But there are many terms out there for all things related to firearms.
why is stock oversize?
@snakebite210 Yes - a few. The shooting ones and where I compare it to the M1 Garand.
I need to do some more vids but have gotten behind. :(
Thanks for the tip.
do you have any updated videos ont his rifle?
Maybe. I can add it to the list!
@SoCalTactical 600 yards is a hell of a long ways away, thanks for that info, too bad you sold it..
@SoCalTactical Let the rest of us know when you do, i'd be curious to see how accurate it is
@SoCalTactical Thanx for the info!
What model is that I might want it
is this semi or auto or both? cause all i got to back me up about this gun is games XD
good video i like it..
@SoCalTactical what is the SASS?
@TheOtherOne122 standard with walnut - 9102.
I have fired the full auto M14 and the shoulder rest is pretty much useless.
@45calibermedic Usually Remington or Federal.
i jamed my m1a. i accedently put a 30-06 in there. what should i do?
Brown-Streak Studios cry
As far as that part about inspecting the bolt, looking for wear on the lugs... you're not going to see that. It's not an AR15. The design could almost be made out of mild steel and still not wear out the bolt and receiver.
Almost. Hell even the Chinese copy is a great rifle. Ask any Canadian hunter, they're all using the Chinese Norinco M305s.
Why do none of the new ones have the bayonet lug?
Merman yeah, I’ve looked into it but e gunsmiths I’ve talked to says that the flash hiders can be really finicky and not worth it unfortunately
I want one!
@2976847 Yes, their plant is in Illinois.
@nashi55 No matter it is a week ago... to give such a smart, balanced reply to what might be the dumbest comment ever on yt deservers a compliment. I aplaud you for that.
@brassel Thanks....I figured this was the best way to get him. I blocked him anyway........
ok ty
@PaulsZakk Its best to do so.
Okay, I give up. I was hoping that you would show how you opened the trap door, but you had already opened it for the video. I almost tore my fingernail off trying to pry it open with no success. What's the secret?
If I remember right I used a coin for extra leverage. I agree...it can be hard to open without something to help.
You usually use the tip of a round, or piece of spent brass too.
@ghettobraden why a mental examination? i think i should go back to basic training
@madjimms Sorry, I didn't mean "bottom magazine" version, but the newer versions seem to look different.
well of course it did for my 19 years of life i learned that people lack common sense like me, and it doesn't hurt to gain new info or even to review thats why we have history class so we don't forget about important and some not so important
If you're trying to learn, then you HAVE some common sense! Those that lack that feel they already know everything, so you are well ahead of them!!
@Ranger4321

@nashi55 and there ya have it. American made product.
slings on backwards
He calls it a a "GUN". Hey dude, it's a fuckin' "Rifle!"
+0321 jarhead This has been covered before, but I'll address it once more. Remember terms such as gun and firearm are quite broad and are used to describe a wide range of weapons that fire a projectile down a barrel using pressure from a self contained case or powder poured in. So in colloquial usage the generic term gun can cover a pistol, musket, shogun, machine gun or rifle. All of these fit under the broad term of a gun or also firearm too.
Sure you can be more specific and say a pistol, but the term "gun" is still accurate since a pistol is a type of gun. So you can use rifle, to describe the M1A or M1 when you want to be specific, but since a rifle is a type of gun, what I said is accurate. I just wasn't specific on the type of gun. One last example - look at machine guns - they have a longer rifled barrel but is called a machine-gun to denote that it is a gun that fires in full auto. The terminology is accurate in this case as well - it is a type of gun.
Let me know if you are still confused on the terms.
Hey jarhead, you're overreacting and making such a big deal about a stupid little topic. Go find something else better to do than complaining about such a dumb little topic that has no point to make such a big deal about. Not everything has to be so damn specific.
Yes I've seen it. You base your views on movies? Ok... This has been covered before, but I'll address it once more. No never been in our great military - never claimed to have been either. I just an average guy that posts videos.
It's known as a "WEAPON" damnnit! LoL
You sling clasp is backwards.
Replace that hideous flash hider with one with a bayonet lug.Springfield Armory makes one with a bayonet lug that you can get at Midway USA and Brownells
Richard Lopez Thanks, I didn't know that
Yes the M1A is great - well made, nice wood stock and proven.
Oh really? Guess you've never heard of a 30 or 50 caliber machine GUN . They have RIFLED barrels to ensure better accuracy. Are you saying an M2 .50 caliber machine GUN, is a SMOOTH bore weapon????
Why the nit-picking over one word? The definition of "gun" is quite broad, and was used correctly in this video, dispite your objections.
@AirsoftVeteran96 Standard model.
@MrPenetrator3 I have no idea what you're talking about???
Please speak in complete sentences if you wish to join the comment process. Insults & hatefull comments don't hurt me at all, just reflects poorly on yourself and your low self esteem. Do you wish to take part in a discussion on the rifle or just be another YT jerk? Let me know so I can block you now, so you'll not waste anymore of my time or anyone elses.
I rigged a small oil bottle and a finger cup of grease
Nice rifle. Please grease the bolt lugs! They are bone dry.
bk I can hear the scraping
1911's are rifled
MrPenetrator3 probably was drunk...
Drooooooooools
The current M1A is not manufactured by the old SA. It closed in 1968 and is NOT related to the current company. The new firm shares the name, but that's it. They aren't even in the same state. You should google more before posting and acting like you know everything.
Rifle! Not Gun.........
absinthe64 WEAPON DAMNNIT!
Doug Williams is this Doug Williams from Maryland, Edgewater?
all rifles are guns, not all guns are rifles.
You can call it one of several terms and all would be acceptable. I have no need to bitch to anyone - YOU are the one that got your panties waded up about the term I used. Grow up.
I'm well aware of the history of SA and don't need you to try to lecture me on that. What you wrote is wrong anyway.
Where are you gun videos Mr Expert?
Why the hateful tone?
junk my rifle has been sent back 3 times
This rifles been around for how many years now? You would think that by now everybody would know everything about this rifle and people would stop making videos about stupid things that we have seen thousands of times before. If they're not original why put it on a video.
