- Sometimes your original key can go missing or the SmartKey lock is improperly programmed, the solution is the Kwikset Reset Cradle. Follow this short tutorial video on the Kwikset Reset Cradle and learn how to reprogram your SmartKey lock to a new key in a few simple steps.

Kwikset's SmartKey is a technological innovation that allows you to re-key your own lock yourself in three easy steps. Unfortunately there are times when the original key gets lost or the SmartKey cylinder has been programmed improperly. This problem can be easily identified when your current key does not turn in the cylinder, which can be caused when a user does not re-key the cylinder properly, which results in a blown cylinder. In these cases you would need to use the reset cradle tool to re-key your lock. In order to re-key a SmartKey lock you will need the following items: the SmartKey cylinder you want to re-key, a Kwikset you want to use, the reset cradle tool and the SmartKey learn tool. This can be found in the SmartKey package or in the store kit. In order to reset your SmartKey cylinder you must first remove the clip that holds the plug into the body of the cylinder. You can then remove the cylinder or the plug out of the body cylinder unit. Now you are ready for the reset cradle. Instructions come printed on the side of the cradle to assist with alignment questions while you are resetting the cylinder. Before you begin, rotate the lower dial to the right until it stops to align the arrow on the upper grip with the starting point on the inner dial. Next insert the cylinder all the way into the inner dial, rotate the lower dial a half turn to the left until it stops where the two arrows meet. Insert the SmartKey tool into the small hole next to the keyway on the cylinder face and push with force until it goes all the way in, you should hear it click. Then remove the SmartKey learn tool and insert the key you want in the plug, while being sure not to rotate the plug. Remove the cylinder or plug from the reset cradle by gently pulling on the key. While holding the cylinder stationary, rotate the key back ninety degrees to the home position. Remove the key; you have successfully reprogrammed your cylinder. You can now reinstall your cylinder back into your product.

This did not work. Now the cylinder is stuck inside the reset cradle and I cannot rotate the cradle back to its "open" position.
Both the cylinder and the cradle are now useless. This went to a very expensive smart lock. I'm extremely disappointed.
