    Thanks for this! Just got back from Kilpisjärvi after a week long hike and one of us brought one of these and now we all want one so I was looking at making them cheaper. Great channel and when watching your video about your base weight I laughed a lot because I've never seen anyone else here in the Nordics who use a rain skirt, except for me of course! I've been at a 4kg bw before but now I've started to add 'luxuries' since I've realized I'm more of a camper than hiker though I'm never going back to the period of carrying 20 plus kilos

      Hi thanks a lot Max I hope you all had a great trip in Kilpisjärvi, It's definitely one of those places wheres you need to take along a Thermacell, isn't it 😄 I'm really pleased that you got some value out of the video, and can start to save some money filling up the gas cartridges 👍. Yes those 20kg backpack days are way gone for me too buddy, in fact I'm getting too lazy now and I prefer my canoe or mtb to carry my gear 🤫😁
      Take it easy and happy hiking for the future. Atb Simon 🤙

      @@AnEnglishmaninFinland1 - And who knows what toxins the Chinese pads are contaminated with. I'll stick with paying for the proper pads, buying them on sale when possible and stocking up. Refilling the cartridges though, seems a no-brainer. I recommend using "Near Zero Impurities" rated butane for optimal life of your heater. Seek it out and your device will last longer than when using cheapo butane with impurities. Not all butane is created equal.

    I got the insert out, and the metal piece back in fine. But when I try to fill I see no liquid! Pressure builds up as you mentioned, I checked this with a nail.. but no liquid is accumulating! What am I doing wrong?

    • @AnEnglishmaninFinland1
      @AnEnglishmaninFinland1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Amy, it's hard to say, if you took the brass valve out and then took the inner piece out with the screw, and then put the brass piece back in again, then the probable reason it's not filling is from the gas can, it could be the nozzle is the wrong type and it's not allowing gas to go into the thermacell cartridge. Try changing the nozzles and see which one fits well. Like I said in the video i had to get some sandpaper and wear away some of the nozzle to get a good right fit. I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes

    • @OMGWTFLOLSMH

      Your tip isn't fitting the valve properly. You need the right tip or you need to modify one. Use a #5 tip and sand it down a bit. Beware, #5 may not be the same in all countries.

    • @AnEnglishmaninFinland1
      @AnEnglishmaninFinland1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hiya Lin, can you hear any gas coming out from the cartridge when you switch the Thermacell on? If not, there is a fault in that area, maybe it's not screwed in enough possibly. One of my cartridges would release a lot of gas because it was slightly wonky when I screwed it in.
      Try checking for the sound of gas when switched on, if there is, then the fault is maybe the ignition

      Hi Julie, I just tried this method from Simon (Thanks Simon!) and I did not put back the check valve. Everything worked as far as I know. Got the orange glow in the viewing port. Also, without the check valve when you fill the cartridge, you will not get 100% fill because the pressure will "spew" out some of the butane so I was able to get about 5/6 full. Again, thanks Simon.
