Someone directed me to your channel from mine as I have avoided this job for years. Great guide, I feel confident now to do it and save myself money each time.
Great guide. I am a qualified mechanic but haven't done a Fiat before, so tuned in to see what type of tensioner it had and what tools are required. Very well explained and lots of useful tips.
This is by far one of the best tutorials I've seen. I especially liked you taking a pause *before* doing something (for example, paint marks) to provide extra context. Well done!
I don't think i would have managed the job without you. It was almost like having an expert at my shoulder walking me through it step by step. So detailed and doesn't miss anything important.
Thanks! VERY IMPORTANT: when tightening the water pump tensioner turn it counterclockwise (push down) so the oval part moves down and to the right. The first time I did this I turned it with the little 2 prong tool clockwise (pulled up) and then the mount would not fit. lol. ALSO, as per an earlier comment the mount to the engine, on a North America 1.4 non turbo should NOT be your torque specs. It’s an aluminum block so 55NM is WAY too much. Everything else was awesome. Mine has AC so it had an auto tensioner on accessory belt. I also removed air box on top so you can Jack it higher but AC lines do limit full up travel so be careful when you jack. Thanks 🙏 very helpful.
Just bought a 2014 Ka. It has only done 25k miles but has been hardly used or MOTd since 2017 so a cambelt/waterpump change is probably a good idea-I have a Haynes manual but your video has emboldened me to do it! Thankyou.

Thanks for the video. Done plenty of cambelts before but not on this engine so it's always worth watching someone else doing it first. I've got the full locking kit and was considering locking the camshaft as per the instructions. My assumption is that they lock the opposite site of the camshaft in case you have to change the pulley as well, but it seems such a fiddle to remove the cam cover and all the other kit connected to it, so I'm tempted to use marks as you have done on my Doblo providing, of course, whoever did it last time did it properly. It runs OK so I'm assuming so. Thanks again for taking the trouble to record the process: certainly the best video of this process I've seen!
Yeah I generally just paint mark em unless there’s an issue or the engine apart etc then you have to pin it correctly , generally if the timing was out they log a cam/crank sync fault .. sames a lot of messing about if you can just paint mark it 👍
I believe the pulley is on a taper and not keyed. Locking the camshaft and loosening the pulley allows for some adjustment (if teeth not quite meshing with the belt0 but as stated, generally unnecessary
I'm a bit late to this video but this is just what I needed! I have a 2014 Ford Ka which obviously has the same engine which I need to change the head gasket on. This goes a long way to getting me there. I'm not a mechanic but have a healthy interest in mechanics. I'm a construction site manager so I'm used to being methodical and structured. Many thanks for this! Gaz.
This was very helpful, although our 500 has air conditioning which means there is a extra tensioner the information was spot on and worked a treat, thanks for the help.
I have to agree, the best video I've seen on car maintenance. I printed the text which became a useful guide (for those of us more use to paper) and allowed highlighting important info and adding some notes. The job went well so many thanks.
Awesome matey, I bought my daughter a ford Ka, same engine. Only had it four days, dealer said they changed timing belt and I'm suspecting he has done it your way. Don't know about the water pump though. Found a leak on thermostat housing so I'm going back with it First class job and video helped loads
Brilliant tutorial. Changed the wifes cambelt and aux belt today with the help of your video. Took a bit longer than 30 mins though 🤣 Thanks for the upload 🍻
Great video. Watched a few times before doing my daughter's belt. Made the job so Simple. I also marked the old belt before removing and then counted the teeth and marked the new belt. Could be very easy to refit 1 tooth out. Just as an additional note the dayco kit comes with a tool for the tensioner.
Great guide and easy to follow, only thing I did differently was used the tool to lock the crankshaft, took about 2 hour to fit, when moving the engine mount for the engine you really need a shallow 15mm socket,
Thank you for detailed explanation I managed to complete it in 2 days. Yesterday i completed it took it for a test drive all was good… today in the morning i started it up and it was knocking. So I did the job all over again today and found out that the tensioner had come loose(un-tensioned). When trying to re-tension it, i held it in place with the plastic 2 pin tool whilst i did the nut up like you did and it worked. After starting the engine the tensioner guide window thing moved and it became loose again. I repeated this process over and over. I could not tighten it more as when i tightened the nut the while thing moved and again moved out of the guide window. Really the plastic 2 pin tool provided wasnt strong enough to hold it whilst I tightened it up. So I ended up fitting the old tensioner that seems to grip when you tighten the nut and all is good. However i need to fit a new tensioner perhaps for another day. I can’t work out what the problem is with the one i bought in the Dayco kit. Maybe I just need a metal 2 pin tool? Also 30nm doesn’t feel like a lot for the tensioner and I feel it would slip and slack the belt so i did it a bit more tighter. Normally the block has a grove for the tensioner to slot in to so I really don’t know. Any insights would be much appreciated thanks. Again great video!
Not come across any issue with them tbh , I usually fit the gates kits .. never known one to come loose before though , I always torque to 30 Nm .. I little more won’t harm anything though .. I’ve only im ever used the metal tensioning tool so can really speak for the plastic one but can’t imagine it’s up to much! 🤣.. 🤞 everything works out this time!
Brilliant tutorial, well done fella. That's the way i've always done it, but I mark the old belt too. I then line up the old belt with the new one and transfer the marks over. Probably not essential, but just habit I guess, and a further reference point to avoid things going bang :)

Hi, had a cambelt kit and water pump change done 1000 or so miles ago on Ford Ka 2013 1.2.Same engine as fiat 500. Now developed an intermittent misfire on two cyclinders 1 and 4 according to OBD codes and goes into limp mode, eml and stop start lights coming on . Turning off engine and restarting solves problem until the next time . Has had ingition pack and leads and plugs changed. Still having intermittent issues so could this be the cam belt timing is out from the replacement work? Same symptoms as if faulty crank shaft sensor but no obd codes for that so far. Most puzzled and potentially dangerous issue. Any advice appreciated...will send your vid to my mechanic too. Thanks for your vids!

Thanks for the comment! They are not the strongest engines and if it’s heat siezed the belt could have easily jumped a tooth but chances are it may have done some more serious damage , I’d do a head gasket test first then check the timing
When do you change the timing belt age or mileage? I read online Ford have now said 150 K miles for the cam belt change and also 60 K and age is not why you change. I’m looking for advise a I have bought a car with only part history with 40K miles and and 8 years old.
I found out myself. Manual phonic r3learn is : Need to properly warm up engine, like half hour drive or so. Stationary, idle and parked. Rev to 5k and stay at least 3 sec, 5 maybe to make sure, and release to idle for 10sec. Repeat again two times the same. Turn off the engine afterwards and leave for like 3 min. Done
Hi, I am losing coolant from the system at the right side of the engine under that aluminium cube that has those two electric multi-pole connectors with the red plastic lever that holds them at place. It is not leaking from that hose that comes out from the coolant tank on the right side and goes towards the engine, but behind it somewhere - which I cannot see without removing that electric related aluminium box. It starts to leak when I start the engine, everytime I have to fill the system up again. Can you please recommend a video for fixing it, or any page from a service manual? Thank you!

Hello DIYDaily, the timing belt tensioner pulley’s locking nut is reuseable, or using a new one is necesseary?

Is there no need to remove the cylinder head then. Can just do the cam belt by making sure the crank is lined up?
Yeah the only way to be 100% sure is to lock the cam but generally it it’s running ok you can just mark the Pulley 👍

When do you change the timing belt age or mileage? I read online Ford have now said 150 K miles for the cam belt change and also 60 K and age is not why you change.
I’m looking for advise a I have bought a car with only part history with 40K miles and and 8 years old.
Tbh if it’s 8 years old I’d get it done regardless of mileage , I’ve seen these belts badly perrished at 8 years old
Is there a manual phonic wheel relearn after replacement or only by diagnostics ? as some cars got flashing light at high revs
I found out myself. Manual phonic r3learn is :
Need to properly warm up engine, like half hour drive or so.
Thank you!
Ill see if I can find anything, I think your talking about the rheostat housing
Very good!
Thank you! Cheers!
Really useful guide, thanks. You're a good techie!
You're welcome!
