I Made My Own Lenses!... Sort Of. Adapting B&H Projector Lenses for Photography!

  • In this video, we take two old projector lenses and adapt them to modern cameras for photography. The lenses we are adapting are the Bell & Howell 51mm f/1.2 and the Bell & Howell 16mm F/1.4.
    These lenses are super sharp in the center with very dramatic swirly bokeh. However, they do have a lot of odd characteristics to work through, such as extreme barrel distortion.
    This was an extremely fun and frustrating project! I hope everyone enjoys!

      The 51mm f/1.2 is my favorite of these lenses! It is gorgeous and unique. Thank you for the watch and the kind words!

    What a cool project. I really enjoyed the final shots. The barrel distortion proved to be a really cool side effect of the adaptation. An excellent addition to the camera bag.

      It is a very cool addition to the camera bag! It's definitely very niche, but I love the characteristics!

    In DSLR bodeies , shutter is very close to the sensor , what is going to hit is the mirror assembly, not the shutter itself .

    • @michaelmarshallphotography5515
      @michaelmarshallphotography5515  หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is very true. And with the flange distance of these projector lenses, you would be unable to use them on any DSLR (and achieve infinity focus).
      But, on the mirrorless Canon's, with the lenses protruding inside of the camera body, it could potentially, physically impede the shutter mechanism. Fortunately, the rear element sits a few millimeters in front of the physical shutter.

      @@michaelmarshallphotography5515 i was correcting a small mistake in the video where you said " it might hit the shutter in dslr cameras " . Great video by the way ,thank you .

    Just stumbled upon this video. After trying to 3D print everything, including the aperture blades, and getting frustrated, my approach was to buy a cheap, damaged M42 135mm f2.8 lens, empty all the glass out and epoxy the projector lens in there. Much less painful and you get to keep the aperture. You still need some spacers to hold it concentric and collimated while the glue cures, but that's pretty easy. I hope it helps someone.

      That's really super cool! Have you used this technique? What were the results like? I'm extremely curious now. Thank you for the comment and watch!

      a helios 44 with the glass removed works great

      I'm looking at using a Helios for one of my future projects. Hopefully everything will adapter the way I'm thinking.

    Thanks for sharing. I use a 52mm to 42mm Focusing Helicoid. I have a Lietz Colorplan, slightly different, but I discovered using a few O-rings in place of the intertube works well. O-rings are cheap, come in assorted sizes, and are much easier to get on and off.

      Thank you for watching! I didn’t think about using o-rings. That’s a great idea!
      If I end up doing another project like this, I’m definitely going to try using the O-Rings.

    Soak in warm water will help a lot to shorten those 38min.

    So what are the differences between the two lenses? And what kind of helicoid are you using? M42 to m52? I often use electrical tape instead of rubber tubing.

    • @michaelmarshallphotography5515
      @michaelmarshallphotography5515  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I used M58 to M58 helicoids with a long focus throw and an m42 mount. Electrical tape is a great idea! And honestly, a lot easier implementation than bike tire inner tube....
      As for the differences between the lenses......its honestly very little. They actually both have a very similar angle of view. I imagine the naming sense has something to do with supported format (the one lens is not 16mm wide). Light gathering, the 1.2 is brighter. But overall, I haven't been able to discern any major difference. I know I prefer the 51mm but I really don't have a concrete reason why.
