July 4th in D.C. -- A Photo Story
In this video, we head to DC on the 4th of July. The plan is to enjoy the day in the National Gallery and then spend the evening viewing and photographing the Fireworks display on Film!
Thank you so much for watching and we hope you enjoy!
For equipment, we used the Canon EOS 1v HS film body with the Carl Zeiss 35mm F/2, Carl Zeiss 85mm F1.4 and Canon EF 300mm F/2.8L IS. We also shot with the Leica M4 using a Voigtlander 40mm F1.4.
For the film stocks, we shot Cinestill 800T and Kodak Portra 800.
All video footage was shot on the Canon R5c.

      Thank you so much! And thank you for watching! I totally get that. I think the price would heavily factor. If you get a deal like we happened to stumble on, I’d say go for it. It does improve a lot at f2.8. But it all depends on price and value.

    Might I suggest that you look at the Konica Hexanon AR 40mm f1.8. That is one of my all time favorite lenses. Also a pancake lens, small light weight, but where as this Minolta MD Rokkor-X is not sharp wide open, the Konica lens is shockingly sharp wide open. It was considered by Photography Magazine, THE Sharpest lens they had reviewed at that time back in the late 70's- early 80's. It is really a a very fine lens. I use mine with a lens hood, but even without it, its fine, but it can flare. That was my gateway lens into Konica Hexanon AR lenses. As a group of lenses, its one of my favorite. The 50mm f1.4 and the older 58mm f1.4 are both amazing lenses as are the 135mm f3.2 and the 135mm f2.5. I'm still not sure which one is better. The 2.5 lens is obviously faster, but that 3.2 version is also very nice! And the classic and very common 50mm f1.7 shouldn't be passed on either. Another wickedly sharp old lens. Konica didn't get a lot of attention and ultimately stopped making cameras and lenses, then merged with Minolta, but back in the day before that merger, they were making some of the nicest lenses available. And now, with the advent of mirrorless cameras, we get to rediscover these lenses. I really love all my Konica Hexanon lenses.

      Thank you for the watch and comment! The Konica 40mm F/1.8 is on my list to try! I've heard nothing but great things about it! I am very interested in the performance and want to see how it is firsthand. I'm also very curious about the Konica Hexanon AR 57mm F/1.2. Have you had any experience with it? I want to do a comparison of the Konica 57mm vs the Minolta "hawkeye" (since the Hawkeye has very quickly become one of my favorite lenses ever). Currently, I don't have any Konica glass. But I'll be on the lookout!

    I got this lens after watching your review. Like all vintage lenses I bought, I run it thru a geiger counter. The rear element registered upwards to 200 CPM. Isn't that high?? The front element registered about 30-40 CPM. Should I be concerned about this?? You have two according to your video. Was this a consideration of yours when you purchased? Readings of 57 CPM with both caps on. Readings of 196 CPM when the flange cap is off. When the geiger is positioned behind the camera with the lens mounted on the camera, readings are 40 CPM.

    • @michaelmarshallphotography5515
      @michaelmarshallphotography5515 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I will preface my response with the statement that I am in no way an authority on CPM or radioactivity. My understanding through research is that while some lenses use Thorium, the danger to the user is negligible. I know that Media Division covered CPM and radiation in the Canon FD video and had lenses with much higher CPM (the Canon FD 55mm SSC Aspherical coming in at over 33,000 CPM from the front element). They covered briefly a study conducted by the Swedish Radiation Protection Authority that determined for typical photographer use, the total radiation exposure amount would be less than 0.2% of the yearly allowable amount. I wouldn't say that the radioactivity of the lens was part of my considerations when purchasing either one. As I mentioned above, I am not an expert. I can understand the concern and wanting to remain safe. I can only say what I've seen in my research. I hope that helps! Thank you for watching!

    In DSLR bodeies , shutter is very close to the sensor , what is going to hit is the mirror assembly, not the shutter itself .

    • @michaelmarshallphotography5515
      @michaelmarshallphotography5515 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is very true. And with the flange distance of these projector lenses, you would be unable to use them on any DSLR (and achieve infinity focus). But, on the mirrorless Canon's, with the lenses protruding inside of the camera body, it could potentially, physically impede the shutter mechanism. Fortunately, the rear element sits a few millimeters in front of the physical shutter.

    I have the zebra version and I agree with your analysis. This lens is overrated except if you go very close focus. That's where is works very well because the hideous sharpness fall off doesn't matter as much if you are say shooting a flower or insects or something. It works well with extension tube. In these close scenarios the bokeh is really nice but I'm not even a fan of the bokeh with more distant shots. The blurry edges and bokeh all merge to a nasty indistinctness. It does get sharper if you stop it down but I think other lenses do better in that scenario anyway.

    I have had one for many years but have never used it. But now, I found a mount adapter that will allow me to put it on my OM 1 micro four thirds. How do you think that will go ?

    • @michaelmarshallphotography5515
      @michaelmarshallphotography5515 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That will be very, very interesting. Is it a focal reducer adapter? If not, you’ll get the 2x magnify from the sensor size difference. An 72-164mm would be really cool. I’d be very interested to hear how that works out!

    • @MrBugleboyb
      @MrBugleboyb 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@michaelmarshallphotography5515 not a focal reducer so, yes, it will become 72-164. I wonder if it will maintain it continuous focus attributes. Stay tuned.

      @@michaelmarshallphotography5515 Well, it’s mounted and it works. I can tell you one thing for sure and that its range of continuous focus while zooming has been reduced by at least 50%, as I thought it would. No photos yet. Standby for further.

  • @kitbaker9134
    @kitbaker9134 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Not sure if you bring it up but what’s the deal with the push/pull zoom ring? Does that mean you can’t put a remote follow focus on it to control the zoom when filming with it?

    • @michaelmarshallphotography5515
      @michaelmarshallphotography5515 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are correct. Being an older style design, you really can't gear the zoom (unless you have the lens rehoused). So, the lens being parfocal, while having its advantages, is really hard to use and create stable footage. You can gear the focus with a follow focus, but the zoom sadly cannot be geared.

    • @kitbaker9134
      @kitbaker9134 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for getting back to me. That's a real pity. I've asked for a quote for the rehousing from GL Optics but guessing it's super expensive @@michaelmarshallphotography5515

    • @michaelmarshallphotography5515
      @michaelmarshallphotography5515 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s definitely got a hefty price tag. Last I check I think GL Optics was rehousing this for like $8500. I would love to have it done at some point, but definitely not in the budget right now.

    Lovely work and thanks for sharing. Quick question though - given your love of Leica cameras (which, incidentally I've never used), do you think that similar (or equally excellent) images could be made with a more humble products? After all, the vast majority of us cannot afford Leica cameras/lenses.

    • @michaelmarshallphotography5515
      @michaelmarshallphotography5515 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for the watch and the kind words! To answer your question, yes absolutely! Being that the Leica M4 is 35mm, the film stock plays a huge part. And I'm using a Voigtlander lens (as I can't afford Leica glass at this time either). The lens and the film stock are doing most of the work for the image. You could definitely get similar, comparable or better results with different/more humble gear.

    I have been using the original black paint body with 8 Element for 10 years. I think this is the design that shows the most perfect unity. And above all, it is suitable for practical use at a good price. I hope you take many great photos with m4.

  • @swesleyharris
    @swesleyharris 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    How is this possible when the flange distance on the fd mount is shorter than the on the ef mount. Usually you need a correction optic to properly adapt an fd mount to an ef mount like you see on the fotodiox adapters. Also your back element here is protruding past the end of the new mount which puts your camera body at risk for mirror slapping that back element when you take a picture. Please explain.

    Very well photographed. The grain and contrast suit the mood and the ambience you and the model created. On a different note, I used to be unhappy at hearing profanity on the Y.T channels. I guess living in the UK had something to do with it, but the behaviour of people over here has changed dramatically in the last few years for the worse, so I have remind myself not to curse and use the F word constantly. A task that I have miserably failed at.

      Thank you for the watch and comment! I was very pleased with the way these photos came out (though I'm still assessing my final opinion on P3200). Yeah, profanity is one of my weaknesses. I find I curse a lot more than I think or intend to. I'm also trying to curse less, but sometimes you get caught up in the moment.
