      Yes! There are things to consider that help me a lot. One of the most helpful things is Keeping the instrument really close to the body, touching the belly, and being really aware not to lean forward if possible. Also in terms of chairs, it’s important not to sit in a chair that squishes down and tilts you pelvis backwards, it’s better to sit on something firm or even a firm cousin lifting the tail bone a little.

    So funny that you mention playing in a dark room. The first class learning from a taiko drum master, we were in a circle with our drums in front of us and he turned off the lights. We were totally in the darkness and he told us he wanted us not to rely on our eyes, but we should sound like we were one drum. I've since learned that so much of playing comes from within; I love your approach and technique. I find it very relatable. So cool!

    I am blind, and just got my first handpan drum. Thank you so much for explaining this to me, because I had mine tilted. But I've only tried to play it just today. I have never even seen one until last week. I don't know where the numbers are, and will have to let my hands be my eyes, as usual. But you helped explain things to me that I had questioned . I hope to learn to play well like you guys all do! Thank you! -Molly

    Yes!! Exactly!! After our private lessons together, you really opened me up to not relying on sight so much. Sometimes I play in very dim light where I can’t really see the notes at all and i think it’s helping build some solid muscle memory thru feeling and playing rather than depending on sight so much.
    I remember when I first got my Handpan I was having a tendency to tilt it towards me a little so I could see my further notes but like u said, it was creating pain in the wrists.
    At the time, I wasn’t sure how or which way to tilt my instrument or if I was doing it wrong or doing my wrists a disservice. So thanks for the clarification! 😃😃

    Additionally for prevention of carpal tunnel, I highly recommend 'finger extension resistance bands'. Strengthening the neglected side of grip opening helps maintain the neutral wrist you recommend here. Basing this on experience as a massage therapist working alongside physical therapist.

      @Handpan360  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Mark Manning Awesome tip! Thanks so much 💓 just bought some bands...any other advice?

    • @markmanning295
      @markmanning295 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Handpan360 nice! You can target different motions with the bands. Examples: keep fingers together while extending the thumb or different wrist positions while spreading all fingers. I like to hold finger extension while slowly rotating hand from the wrist. Find the spots that are challenging and try to develop smooth, steady range of motion. Don't overdo it, 7-10mins of exercise is plenty to fatigue the muscles. Using ice around the area and up the forearm will be great for circulation, 15-20mins.

      Oh that makes me so happy to hear! How are we supposed
      To know these things without someone telling us. It’s hard to track everything. I’m so glad to bring some awareness to this. We got to take care of our bodies so we can play to our hearts content. I used to also be a licensed massage therapist, some tricks I learned in that life for someone like you using your wrists a lot, is to alternate between soaking your arms in hot water, as hot as you can stand, then ice water, and back and forth a couple times before bed. I need to start doing it too! It helps SO much!

    • @Handpan360
      @Handpan360  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, this is a valid concern, you can use a piece of furniture on the other side to add stability, lifts for your feet, a shorter chair, sit on the floor, or use a stand.

  • @peteralexanian1460
    @peteralexanian1460 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Peter! Regarding your recommendation for handpan tilt, my biggest challenge is keeping the instrument from sliding off my legs. I have short legs and arms. If it wasn’t for Nadishana I’d be jealous of most handpan players who post videos, as most have longer limbs, which seems to be an aid for these massive instruments. Most adult furniture doesn’t allow for my feet to be flat on the floor while sitting (I’m 5’5”), so any tilt toward me makes it hard to relax and play at the same time as the position of the instrument feels like it’s going to soon slide off. HCT used to sell a belt hook to help hold the handpan in place but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen it available again. Not sure if it worked or not. Suggestions, for us hobbit handpan players? Love your videos.🙏❤️

    • @Handpan360
      @Handpan360  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I was in your position, I would use a stand. I often use a stand and love it. I use camping tripod stools for the floor and snare stands or a handpan tripod style stand for sitting. both of these options I have found to work with lots of bottom notes. I also love to play with a stand while standing up. You can easily get a nice tilt on a stand, you just have to be mindful. and make sure on of the arms of the stand is supporting the opposite side of the instrument directly in front of you. If you are concerned about tuning the port, you can achieve a similar sound by sliding a flat refrigerator magnet over a small portion of the port. I hope that helps/
