Excellent video, I encourage you to plunge into sofubi collecting. I started collecting kaiju sofubi seriously somewhat recently and it's a rabbit hole that gets deeper and deeper as you look. I collect mainly for my love of monster art, so I lean toward vibrant or otherwise distinct color patterns on Godzilla and other miscellaneous monsters. The sculpting combined with the dope paint jobs make them an absolute pleasure to look at. Knowing that everything is hand assembled and painted is extremely satisfying to me. I'm less into historical value and more into aesthetic. For instance, I think Marusan's classics are cool, but the glitter and paint jobs on their more modern figures blow the old ones out of the water. If I had to choose a "Greatest Toy Line of All Time", I would choose Marmit's Monster Heaven. I think those two examples pretty accurately portray my collecting sense. I love the 90's sofubi renaissance aesthetic and I have since I was a kid. It feels like buying fine art while tickling those childhood nerves deep in my cranium. The slope is slippery but it's pretty chill once you're down here lol
Absolutely love and admire Sofubi. Oddly enough, I have not jumped into collecting any yet, still just window shopping, looking for that perfect introductory piece. Great video!
I always thought Sofubi was cheap to make but your video definitely taught me differently! Toy Talk Tuesday is my Tuesday ritual now so I thank you for that!!!!
Another great one bro, it’s just a testament to you to make someone who has no interest in that specific toy type but feel fully engaged from start to finish
I actually just booked tickets to Japan. Gonna fill a suitcase full of sofubi and whatever else I find for my collection. I've wanted to for years so I'm buzzing that it's finally happening.
back in 2011, I made sketches of a vinyl toy (kamen rider) with an articulated torso made possible by two wires. asked around people that know rotocasting and they said there was no way to hold the wires in place.
@@BadmanPictures I could totally do that, but I am going to go to japan one way or another, so I will keep it as a things I want to to there, is more about the experience
I discovered Sofubi back in 2008 while it was still (mostly) obscure to western collectors. It wasn't cheap, but given the boutique nature of many producers it was totally justifiable. Unfortunately there seems to be a certain "prestige" that has developed in the toy collector market for Sofubi. I could be wrong, but the inordinate sums regular people are willing to throw at this stuff makes one wonder... Still love Sofubi, but I struggle to enjoy it like I used to. Great overview.
Great vid, i Can totally relate to. As a vintage toys collector (mostly japanese, popy, etc... And vintage sci-fi) i started a sofubi collection about 5 years ago, i'm totally addicted. As an Illustrator, i Hope to create my own someday.
Is there a mid price point for mass produced original Sofubi; or is it pretty much just the 500 yen Godzilla and Ultraman stuff, or the small production artist items that are hundreds of dollars a pop?
You learn something new everyday .never knew it’s called sofubi .jeez there expensive on the eBay .i collect marvel legends ,thundercats and vintage robots
These look awesome, very impressed with what people are making these days. Most of the sofubi I have are from Kamen Rider, some are from Super Sentai and a few Ultraman ones too
What sort of signature? Some autographs are relatively common, such as the suit actors and various movie cast members. The chances are extremely high that it's legitimate and you can possibly find record of the very signing event. Many production members signed their name on all sorts of items, probably thousands of times.
My first sofubi was a 12 inch impirial Godzilla. I always loved Godzilla movies and transformers - star wars- your basic epic 80s kid love. 10 years of collecting now. Sometimes get the bug for either of the three- right now it's my sofubi. Marmits - marusan- bullmarks and even Large size 80s Bandai. The latest is the lottery medicom Kyoto battle version anraku ansaku Gamera with burning hand. So Awesome!!
Really enjoyed this one Theo, great job on the production. As someone that has often heard the term "Sofubi" but wasn't very knowledgeable of it, this was perfect. Appreciate it 👊🏻
Don’t do this to me Theo 😂 I’ve been on the edge of going down the Sofubi rabbit hole for a while now. It’s the price of them that’s held me back. Really informative video. Looking forward to seeing your new project 👍
Never really knew the name sofubi until I met you T 😎 although I fuxed with Ultraman as a kid I didn't know about the termology surrounding those type of figure toys. Yet another banger of a vid my fren...big up Slime House TV 📺
Ive been collecting tokusatsu sofubi as long as I can remember. For me, it's about finding characters/kaiju from the shows I love (which is pretty much all tokusatsu so I'm doomed).
Too much of a black hole for me to dive into properly but picked a few pieces up that I liked the look of while in Japan (how can you not??). Absolutely love them but you can't have everything!
Great one! I was recently in Tokyo and your tips from previous videos were very helpful. Thanks! I’m also a sofubi maker, producing in Brazil. You can check my stuff at resinagem. ☺️
I'm addicted to Sofubi, especially the vintage stuff !
It's an expensive addiction. lol I love Godzilla and Kinnikuman soft vinyl.

Really colorful and awesome figs bro! Great video
Growing up watching Ultraman, Kamen Rider and Godzilla in early 90s ... and now here i am 30 years later buying these Kaiju sofubi like an addict lol

Go go go!
Definitely stop by Mandarake Cocoo which only sells Sofubi. It's right around the corner from the Mandarake store (black tower)
@@terenceyuen4424 Definitely. I have a big list of spots I plan to hit up. Those 2 plus Nakano Broadway are definitely happening.

One of my dreams is to one day be able to go to Japan, and I will for sure pick up a couple Sofubis, no matter how long it takes me

Do any companies grade sofubi?? I purchased a autographed gojira from ebay not sure if its legit???
Maybe, It's not something I've ever seen though

It was Funko that got sofubi on my radar, the hikari line and one figure in particular. Funko hikari Oni was responsible for my collection.
Great video... time to check out ebay for the vintage Sofubi. xD
