Not quite, the design maybe but the name itself was actually introduced way back from the fleetway sonic comics (yes the same comics that introduced us to the evil super sonic that most people know as fleetway super sonic) in this comic the metal Sonic's (yes plural) were commonly referred to as metallix (and some special cases like a knuckles metallix or metallix mk2 who was the comics version mecha sonic from sonic 3 and knuckles) there was also emperor metallix, leader of a whole legion of metal sonics, he looked like a giant red metal sonic that was bolted to hovering throne
