      That's good to know as each species molts at certain times or only once or twice or more.

      I own 2 budgies and they molt about twice a year. I find it adorable when my birdies preen each other's faces. How often do blood feathers happen? I've had one of my birdies for almost 5 years and I've never had one.

    • @Loveofpets

      that is so funny! after we got our Amazon and then later on after we got two more and two cockatoos I always saved the feathers, they are so precious and beautiful! grandchildren take some home and I used some to decorate an Aztec costume I made for an artist doll, but I still have hundreds. eBay but my husband finally asked me why I was saving them and I said, "To make another bird of course!"
      unfortunately, I have found that the feathers do degrade, start to break down after 20 years. so I have recently been throwing away some of the old ones.....

    Yep... my 4 birds are molting.
    One word
    FEATHERS!!!
    Edit: My budgie that molted the most died....
    2 words=

    Donna, we need to see the special food prep offered to moulting budgies. Also what healthy poops and NOT healthy poops...look like...
    Also, what money we need to prepare for spending when taking a budgie to emergency Avian Vet visit !
    So important to be financially prepared for vet visits! Some of us live 50 miles from a proper Avian Vet.

  • @jima9356

    Perfect timing; I have 4 budgies and at least 2 of them are molting right now. Glad that you described molting similar to shedding, I see lots of speckle flecks, as well as the flight feathers, tail feathers, and down feathers. I like how you pointed out the pin feathers; I notice the birds pecking at the other's head. You are right on in describing them as grumpy/lethargic and puffy due to the itching; I am going to be misting them with spray bottle water twice a day, since they don't do baths (they avoid the water in a dish). I got the 4 budgies one year ago and they started molting a couple weeks later. They were molting again in the fall. It seems like the fall molt has extended; I have been seeing feathers regularly for some time. They have been eating well and their feathers and colors look good, so I don't feel they have a nutrient deficiency. Could it be that during one month, one budgie might be molting and the others have not started?, thus, having 4 budgies, someone might always be molting. With budgies, how long should each molt last?

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, they can be molting at different times so it looks like they are always molting. Molting can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 4 months and longer for large birds.

    • @jima9356
      @jima9356 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This was a great video. I really learned a lot. It was very frustrating these past couple months with my budgies showing grumpiness, lethargy, constantly itching and losing feathers, only to realize now that this has been an extended molt. Their appetites have been good and colors are nice. I have been misting them with a spray bottle and they seem to be tolerating it well; they don't seem to be squawking at me like they ordinarily would do anytime I would go near them. Also enjoyed watching your lovely birds; I recognize many of your budgies now (always good to see Jack Sparrow in the video). Seeing Pickles and Nugget preening is wonderful and your cockatiels Jingles and Willow show all of their beauty. @@Loveofpets

    Do budgies moly a lot, of had mine for 3-4 years and I remember them mooting a lot. (I begin to look closer now) Recently, they seem to preen and scratch their heads a lot. One has pin feathers so I’m assuming their having a jolting week or something. Thanks for addressing the dandruff stuff, because I really got worried since 3 days ago one of my budgies was preening himself on my knee and I was wearing black pants. So when he flew off I saw white stuff, so I freaked out. I give them baths daily because of the molting

He only has a couple pins near his beak but is pruning himself alot and very full on at times but is only loosing a couple small feathers at a time. I've also noted that he's not eating his veg as much as he normally does. Any tips would be great as I'm finding it hard to find helpful advice on moustache parakeets. Thanks 😊

    but the worst offenders of all are cockatoos! they have three times the feather dust of any other birds I think. although macaws are pretty close. I often just give up.

    +Love of Pets at what time do you wake up your birds? I too live in Ontario, up north, though. It gets dark early and stays dark late here alot of the year so I can't really depend on the sun to tell my bird when to be awake.
    What does your night time routine look like? I remember you said in another video that some of your birds don't stay in the bird room. How do you put them to sleep when you and your family are still awake?
    We recently got a budgie and he's kept in the livingroom where we spend most of our time which is great except for at night. I understand that birds need to sleep for 12 hours but being in a busy room doesn't make for a great place to sleep if you're going to bed before everyone else. I've thought about moving the cage at bird-bedtime but it's not a very practical idea. Things spill and it's not a very relaxing way to get to sleep. What do you think of putting a bird into a different cage in a quiet room to sleep? Can birds get used to being in multiple cages?
    I love your videos :) you are well informed and it's clear that you really have a passion for your pets. Thanks for reading my comment. Any advice is much appreciated

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! I wake up my birds between 7 and 8 a.m during the week and sometimes later on the weekends if I sleep in. I have a bird room and I cover their cages and have a black out curtain on the window. In the summer when the sun is shining early, I have to make sure the curtain is tightly closed as if they see any light they start to sing. I am lucky to have a bird room. In the evenings I cover their cages between 8 and 9 p.m and close curtains.
      I have 2 birds in my living room and cover their cages at 9:00 p.m. My family room is on my lower level so it's quiet upstairs.
      A sleep cage is great to have.
      If my set up was different, I would have a sleep cage and put it in my bedroom so the bird can sleep.
      I may make an evening routine video in the future.

    Very useful vid thanks, I was so scared my new Tiel was plucking, but she looks as scraggy as yours here. But that blood feather removal looked terrifying ! Is this something all bird owners have to do at some point or is it rare?

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's rare a blood feather may break but it's best to be prepared and know what to do just in case it happens. Cockatiels are prone to breaking blood feathers when they have night frights.

      It can be extremely traumatic for the bird, so it should ONLY be done in an emergency. Most heal on their own and shouldn’t be plucked. I’d imagine it would be similar to pulling off a human’s nail

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, it depends on how bad your allergies are. It's best not to keep your budgie in your bedroom and make sure to have an air purifier near the budgie. You can also mist the newspaper when changing the paper so the dust does not stir up. Also wear a mask when cleaning the cage. Clean cage daily so that no dust can accumulate.

    My Cockateil had a night fright last night, she rammed into the side of her cage before I got to her and broke a feather. She doesn’t have any other injuries, I made her walk to me after calming her down and she flapped her wings a few times and fluttered to me (her wings are clipped but they won’t be after she molts) it’s a tail feather that she can’t quite reach. What should I do? It’s broken about half way down.

    Thanks for your tips
    Could you please help to advise me on the take of the shama bird? The situation of the bird problem is related to the tail, it didn't grow after molting season.
    The historical is "during taking the shama bird, I forgot to close the door on the birdcage, thus he throughout the cage and escape to the outside. Then he goes to the other birdcage and enters the top of the cage, unfortunately, he was stuck between the birdcage and the cloth cover and he could not get out. At that time another bird inside the cage attacked him. So that one of main tail has dropped (the longest tail). When I found out and intervened, it was all over => The result is the bird gets panic and loses the longest feather. Unfortunately once again he was escaped on my hand and flight to the outside, then perched on a tree branch to calm down and singing. I tried to catch him but cannot, until the next day morning I have catch him by a bird trap with many worm meal. ( We may calling is people die for money, birds die for bait.)...
    After welcoming him back home, I tried to take care of him carefully with full foods like the worm, crickets, locusts, bird bran... and quiet rest. Just like that for a week, he started singing. So, I'm very happy when my pet regained the form. But life is not an as good dream, unstill the molting season comes. Unfortunately, once again the failed tail (the longest tail that failed while the 2 birds fighting) can not be gowned up, even though I was carefully taken care of him. With two molting times but the broken tail still doesn't grow back. This thing is made me very sad. Life would be very boring without a pet and a bird lacks up a long tail.
    With this situation, could you please help to advise me "How do tail feathers grow back?"
    I highly appreciate your help!
    Thank you,
    Hiep

    Hello is it normal if your buggies are molting and one of its tail feather has a little blonde on the end

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, hope your bird is okay. Sometimes when new feathers grow there feather gets damaged and it could bleed. When a new feather comes in its full of blood until it stops growing. You can stop the bleeding by applying corn starch to the break. Some may clot on its own. If you see dried blood and it's not alot then it's best to leave it alone.
      If you see fresh blood and it won't stop bleeding then the feather may need to be pulled.
      Go to an avian vet or watch my video on how to pull a broken blood feather. th-cam.com/video/VK3fsHUDgtU/w-d-xo.html
