FEATURED TORNADO EVENTS:
APRIL 12 Soso Mississippi EF4
On Easter Sunday a large, extremely dangerous, long tracking tornado was underway in Mississippi. Doppler radar revealed an impressive supercell, well defined hook echo and distinct lofted debris signature. But up close, vague walls of gray, shrouding rain curtains and a veil of tall trees obscured a hell on Earth. Prior to striking Soso Mississippi, the tornado grew to 2.25 miles wide. The THIRD widest tornado ever documented. Along a 68 mile damage path, it debarked and leveled entire forests. Cars and trucks were thrown hundreds of yards, mangled beyond recognition. Many homes and businesses were destroyed, some completely leveled and swept away
including some well built brick and concrete structures. With estimated wind speeds up to 190 mph (310 km/h) this tornado earned an EF4 rating. Following closely behind, another large EF3 tornado trained close to the previous tornado's track.
APRIL 19 Southwest of Hattiesburg MS
Seven Days later, another significant tornado risk targeted Mississippi. Chasing over the previous week’s damage paths compounded the danger as trees were still weakened and downed. An intensifying high precipitation storm brought darkness early along with a barrage of powerful positive ground flashes. Not only do positive ground flashes look different from typical negative ground flashes, they often sound different. The thunder from these mega-bolts hits you like the shock wave of an explosion. Deeply embedded in rain, an unseeable mile wide tornado cruised 54 miles across the state at a ground speed of 55mph.
At its peak intensity, The EF4 demolished two well constructed homes, leaving clean slabs in its wake.
APRIL 22, Madill Oklahoma
A low precipitation supercell approaching Madill Oklahoma setting the stage for a highly visible tornado. Right out the gate, it earned EF2 status, snapping power poles and flinging trees as it passed just south of town. A large section of a warehouse was demolished and under a rainbow, mobile homes were completely destroyed.
MAY Low Tornado Activity
April was an active month for tornado activity in the US. Usually May is the peak month, however in strong contrast to 2019, May 2020 had extremely low tornado activity. Forecastable chase-able storms mostly organized into linear modes. Though often ominous and photogenic, Lines or squalls are much less efficient at producing violent tornadoes.
JUNE Low Tornado Activity
June followed May's suit with lower than average forecastable & chase-able tornado activity.
JULY High Tornado Activity
After most of us had thrown in the towel, July surprised storm chasers with higher than average tornado activity in the Northern Plains. On July 8th, and incredibly photogenic EF4 tornado touched down near Ashby Minnesota. A high base storm allowed the sun to light the tornado and a vibrant rainbow often accompanied the bright white tornado depending on the perspective. Storm Chaser Melonie Metz was kind enough to license her amazing footage for this video.
2020 Climate
2020 had lower than average tornado activity with 1075 confirmed tornadoes. (Average is 1250)
Climatologically, the Atlantic hurricane season exceeded records
with 30 named storms, 12 of which landed on the continental U.S.
30 named storms - Previous record 28
12 named U.S. storm continental landfalls - Previous record 9
6 hurricanes made U.S. landfall - tied previous record
The Western US endured the most active wildfire year on record [1983 to present]
and the global average annual temperature was the 2nd warmest on record
and the 5th warmest in the 126-year record in the U.S

@Pecos Hank I went to school a few mile from where those huge tornadoes struck Southern Mississippi in April. I live in Mississippi spent my whole life surrounded by these horribly powerful things. My grandmother lives in Collins Mississippi, her house was less than five hundred meters away from that 2.5 mile wide ef4 tornado. Her property suffered immense damage. She live right off of US 49 which was a large stretch of that tornadoes path. I spent two weeks with my father cleaning and repairing her property. I saw and drove along the exact same tornado path that you did in this video. Truly amazing and devastating to revisit.
Correction. It was the April 19 ef4 that almost hit my high-school and many of my closest friends who lived in the purvis and Lumberton area just west of Hattiesburg. And the tornadoes on the twelfth hit my grandparents
This is the one video I jump out of my seat for every single year. How you cinematically compile, go into detail, and your commentary is as good as it gets. I have really bad storm anxiety due to being in the Joplin Tornado in 2011. Through the years it's evolved into PTSD I've developed Lilapsophobia (fear of tornados/hurricanes). Your videos have really helped me view these storms in a different light. This is like therapy to me, and I wanna sincerely thank you for that. I hope you see this comment because my fear is crippling at times especially in the spring and I really thought there was no way to help it, but you've helped me immensely. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Please don't stop doing what you do.
How were you affected personally by the Joplin tornado? What street did you live on in 2011?
I have Lilapsophobia too
I, too, have PTSD. I've almost died 4 times. But, if God leads you to it, He will get you through it.
i am so surprised that im not the only one who has trauma from tornadoes. i was 9 years old when the Memorial Day Tornadoes of 2019 hit my state. ever since then, i have had a lot of panic attacks involving thunderstorms… im 80% sure i have some form of PTSD, but i never got it diagnosed, even 4 years later, storms still give me flashbacks…

That Dalton tornado was quite something. I was actually about to go chasing that day, and I only live 3 hours from where that happened. However, I decided to stay back. I've seen many tornados around my house here in Arkansas. A funnel almost touch down in my neighbor's backyard (they moved a few months after), a furious tornado that later demolished thousands of homes on a mountain, and I've seen many waterspouts in Texas and Florida. Glorious sight. Also I'm pretty sure the dog at 14:13 is a Labrador Retriever. I have one named Daisy. She's really good when it comes to sniffing out thunderstorms. She has anxiety and because of all the loud sounds from the thunderstorms and dogs hearing sounds louder than we do, she hides in mom's room on dad's side of the bed. When it gets so severe, she trots to the bathroom (our "saferoom" when a tornado touches down somewhere near us.) She did that 2 weeks ago when a massive severe thunderstorm hit us, and she was terrified. I remember when it was sunny out and my mom gasped, I walked to the glass door leading to our backyard and my jaw dropped. The wall cloud on that storm was massive, strong, and absolutely gorgeous... I loved that storm tbh. That exact storm was the same one we saw that funnel in our neighbor's yard. I also remember going home and seeing a storm chaser (with one of those cars looking like one from like the movie Twister) in the exact direction we saw that wall cloud. We lost power that night (I think?) For about maybe 2 days???

Jose and josbee I have not laughed that hard in a long time
I'm surprised I didn't wake my fiancee up from cracking up.
I wish I could've spent my quarantine making friends with lizards in my backyard
You’re the main reason why I’m still into meteorology, you’ve taught me much more then what my earth and science class ever did haha
Who here loves tornadoes but has not seen one in real life.
I have seen a waterspout.
I just don't know if I want that to change or not
Me
I have seen a funnel cloud in my backyard and pass over my house back in 2019 on March 14th.

im in NYC for school, and i miss my lizard back in Minnesota so much watching those clips. i mean i miss him all the time, but those just melted my heart. he’s a leopard gecko named ralphie.
18:35 also, since i obviously live in Minnesota when i’m not at college - i had literally no idea this happened. i live in alexandria, not that far from dalton.
I was just thinking on the way home, “I’d sure like a new tornado video from Pecos Hank!”
imagine being a rabbit just chilling in the woods and all of a sudden you get yeeted 400ft in the air by a big ass tornado
Free parachuting minus the parachute

And he got an awesome sense of humor. ❤

I've been a witness to that horizontal lightening a couple of times. Absolutely breath taking and creepy at the same time.
This is probably the best tornado channel I’ve ever seen for tornadoes I really love your channel, Please make more of these videos :)
fun fact: if a tornado is moving side to side, you’re safe. it it looks like it isn’t moving at all, it’s either going away, or towards you. let that sink in for a second.
@XLegomenon pour it a glass of water, and make some pizza rolls. they like that a lot from what i hear
@XLegomenon Hahahahaha
@@_shuh the tornadoes? I think they would like pizza rolls
Maybe some red wine and steak to make it romantic- **insert romantic music and tornado noises**

No wonder there were almost no tornadoes last year. They were all in quarantine

Was just scrolling looking for beautiful tornadoes and gorgeous squall lines. Found this channel. I'm hooked. I absolutely love this. I have wanted to be a storm chaser my whole life. But...I had children and had to go another direction. Keep the vids coming
“Here comes a speeding crackhead” oh my god. I literally love this guy sm. 😭😂❤️

2020 in one phrase.
The scary thing about Mississippi tornados is that YOU CAN NEVER SEE THEM! We have so many freaking pine trees and there’s always so much rain
same goes for TN here, always night-time and usually rainwrapped, plus a shitton of trees.
Same for here in Alabama
And Georgia
Same thing here in GA...and they always seem to come later in the evening or super early in the morning.
Southern Indiana hills and forests will confuse a severe storm and a tornado. Sometimes it’s examining the damage determines a tornado was present.
Beautiful photography and images. Thank you!
Thank you, Pecos Hank, for being so kind to Mother Earth's animal babies! 💖
