Can You Get Bucks to Bed on Small Properties and/or On Properties w/ Limited Cover?

- Habitat managers, including myself, talk a lot about creating "depth" or "depth of cover" on properties to try and set up buck bedding. But do you always need depth to bed bucks on your property? In this video, I take a look at where the last 5 bucks I harvested were bedded. It's eye opening to see how little depth they actually needed. At the end of the day, security is king.

How do you feel about Reed Canary Grass? I have it on my property and I'm trying to eliminate it as much as possible.
Great informative video!! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for that and thanks for watching!
Very interesting and thanks again for sharing 👍
Thanks for watching!
But you're close to Wisconsin the state with the most booners.
Having the rifle season during peak rut makes it hard to grow booners
Good stuff!find out the why of the deer behavior
Definitely!
Love your videos and your terrain is similar to mine. It’s nice to get confirmation on things I’ve seen and believe that are working for others too!
I appreciate you following along and glad to hear you're noticing a lot of the same things!
nailed it with this video, Sam! "Depth of Cover" tends to get overused. And im guilty of using that phrase as well.
Thanks brother! I'm with you, I think depth is great but security is king! Make them feel secure in all the bedding areas and you can definitely bed a buck in smaller cover
Do you think the depth is relative to yards or security/ screening from other deer/open fields? I think sometimes I get caught up in thinking of depth only in distance when there is a lot of other things that factor in.. thanks for the video!
I definitely think it pertains more to your second point about screening from other deer and a feeling of security. Mature bucks just know how to survive and they find those little security pockets they need
@@PFHabitat thanks for your response!! And thank you for your content!!
@Family.whitetails913 thanks for watching!
Great video. Deer love structure but has anyone ever tried cutting down a full size tree and dragging it into a switchgrass stand for structure. I know there is no food value once it dries out but do you think it help place deer where you want them?
Yah it's been done. The branches have birds perch on them and distribute tree seeds into the areas through their feces. And the deer like the added structure. If you have the equipment it's worth doing
Thanks for the response. I’ll be giving that a try and see how it works.
Good luck brother!
Thanks for another great video! Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the kind words and I appreciate you watching!
Keep that moon secret between us.😁 I've had many mature buck experiences with moorise just before sunset with warm/stable weather. Great video. I can totally relate to secure small bedding spots near food for the biggest bucks at FA. Well done.
Haha I was hoping you'd pick up on that. Yah Freedom is a strong testimony for small cover with big results. And it'll just keep getting better!
Good stuff.
Big old bucks do not always do how we plan/ scheme things.
I shot an 8.5 year old 60 yards from my cabin. I watched him get out of his bed about 40 yards from my stand.
He had lots of "way better" spots to bed but chose that spot that day.
Was a spot on a ridge bout the size of a garage i have has a straw bed under a tipped over tree.
Never say never.
Fantastic points. I hear Dan Infalt talk about those overlooked spots on public a lot where bucks bed where you'd least expect. One he mentions is bedding where they have a good view of the parking lot. Mature bucks are just a different breed all together.
When I hear depth of cover, it also usually relates to getting away from doe family group pressure. I was wondering if they're density is lower on your property or where they were bedding in relation to these bucks. Just trying to get a better grasp on all the info that's out there. Thanks. Love your channel.
The deer density is healthy on our farm but definitely not over populated. The does bed pretty heavily in my hinge-cut bedding areas and in the aspen regen within 50 yards or so of the food. Early season I've seen the bucks bedding fairly close to the does. The bucks seem to become much more reclusive throughout the month of October. And then of course that all changes in November
Do you like prickly ash for habitat?
It doesn't bother me. It's native. Grouse and fawns love it. There are better natives but it has enough of a benefit for me not to worry about it. Just don't love what it does to my arms haha
Great work bud -Gabe
Much appreciated brother!
Great video
Thanks Mark!
Great content shared and using the actual locations and travel made this one really stand out. Topos/aerials would be whipped cream and a cherry.
Were they consistently bedded there (regardless of wind, weather, time of year, etc)?
I think you touch on it at the end; your theory on DOC is that it is secondary to whatever the buck found best, correct? How far off the doe bedding were these and what time of year?
Aerials are definitely a good idea. I plan on doing a video series breaking down on the set up of all the small wood lots on our property and I'll plan to add some aerial maps and drone footage, though my drone isn't the best so don't expect grade A quality haha.
All of the bucks I shot had several different bedding locations throughout the farm with time of year, wind direction, and weather playing a major role in determining where they would bed.
Yes, if you have depth or can create depth I think that is great. But ultimately having depth works well because it creates security. But if you can figure out how to create security with small bits of cover I believe you can bed bucks on small pieces of cover. The first two bucks were mid September. The second two were Oct. 7th and 9th. And the rifle buck was Nov. 4th. Three of the five bucks were bedded relatively close to does, within 60 yards or so. The big fella and the rifle buck were no where near does.
