I do probably 50 or 60 power steering hoses per year in Bunbury WA. I am a mobile hose owner and depending on the brand of hose , you can do almost OEM quality work, or sometimes I use stainless/ Teflon if the owner wants bling.
I do the same here in Ballarat mate. Loads of custom mustang ones. I do a lot in steel pipe work too. I get a real kick out of doing a good OEM looking job.

Hi, from Orlando, Florida, U.S.A.! Great presentation. I learned the Metric system when I was a child in the 60's, and they said that was the system to which we were going - 60 years later I'm still waiting. I use both systems, doing machine work as a hobby. Best wishes to you, and I hope that you stay healthy!

If you put tape over where you are cutting with the cut of wheel, it makes clean up much easier. Great how to video. Thanks for sharing.
Also quick tip when making hydraulic hoses, or any hoses for that matter, always clock/orient your fitting and route your hose to go with the natural flow of the hose, meaning bulk hoses comes on a spools and tend to always have a bend or curve in it. Keep that in mine when routing your hose, don’t fight it, use it to your advantage! Specially true if you go above 1/2” hoses and more so if it’s double braided.
9:25 those fittings are the same ones we used to build hoses in the miltary as a hydraulics technician. The real fun ones are the sizes 24. So same procedure just ALOT bigger lol.
Swapping OE to new crate motor on my old C10 right now and I have to adapt OE box to new pump with metric fittings. I love to see the old "I don't have it, so I'm going to make it" mentality! Glad to see Aussies still hot rodding too!
I like to put a piece of tape on the hose after screwing it into the nut(at the point where the hose comes out of the nut), as one could hear it gets quite tight as you thread it together. The tape will show you if the hose pushed out which can happen. We used fittings like these on the oil rigs back in the day.

can you do a step by step on doing custom engine mount? like how to line up the engine and gearbox? is there any difference when making custom mounts between fwd and rwd engine?

Topic suggestion: the differences and various applications between oil-only CHRA turbos and oil-and-coolant CHRA ones.
Oil only for a engine thats built to make big power.water cooling if it's going to a million kilometres... Turbos have come along way from the 90s! unless you buy a manufacturer specific turbo it won't have water cooling....
@@thecraftiekiwi4919 I'm looking at either a G25-660 Garrett (oil-and-water CHRA) or perhaps a Gen 2 5558 PTE (oil-only CHRA). I'll be tuning for 500whp.
I currently have a GT2871 now (oil-and-water, 390whp) on my Mazdaspeed 3. My application is for competitive tracking and auto-x, so heat rejection over an extended period of time is important and has me shying away from oil-only.
These videos are the reason that I watched Al in MCM and now The Skid Factory all these years. Great lessons on making your own stuff. I noticed that these videos don't get many views as the other videos. That's unfortunate.
Would love to see a DIY aircon setup where as you have to either replumb and use a different condensor.
This would be great as I have to fit AC to my VW van this autumn.

A tip for cutting hydraulic hose, even big heavy "six wire" hose, when you dont have the correct cutting equipment, is to lay it over a log and give it a big hearty swing and chop with an axe. It will go straight through it very cleanly.

Welding the thin pipe to an AN fitting with ER70S filler can make them brittle and prone to failure. Especially in due to heat and vibration fatiguing them. I usually like to use silicon bronze and TIG them together without melting the base metal. You'll notice a lot of engine oil pickups are constructed this way for the same reason.
Hence why he said he has them silver soldered at his friends radiator shop ;-)

Good on ya mate ! You sir would be one of the few good ones out there. Most hose replacement companies I've seen only specialise in quick and fit for purpose not show car standard, and when you do find someone who can make it shine it has the shiny price tag to match. If it is cool with @The Skid Factory could you pass your contact details around (for when we require a quick roadside fix) ?
As a hydraulics worker who remakes P/S hoses but the part you'll miss is the internal resister on the high pressure side preventing damage to pumps and boxes due to fluid pulses. with all respect Yoda at 11:14 you shouldn't use the hose to turn the mandrel/hose tail on.
Funny part is AN6 is a 9/16" JIC to hydraulics worker.

I love AN fittings. My father and I put everything needed to run a boat into an empty hull. We used AN fittings for the fuel and hydrolic systems. I accidentally over tighten one and killed it. We had to recreate the entire hose again. We took great care in taking the rest of the hose apart in order to save the other fitting.
Great video Al, this is so much nicer than what we used to be forced into 20 years back doing swaps, brazing two different high pressure lines together on the hard line with an oversize piece of hard line over the two was the way, seems rather rogue now but it worked I guess. Used to cost about £150 for a custom pipe back in the 90's in the Uk, people were spending that for the bloody engine to swap in haha.
even if you are ancient very rare you would eyeball 40 thou, hacksaw blade is 25 cigarette packet is 15 and if you were setting timing, the paper off the back of the silver packing is just the right gap to feel the firing point in the points. put the paper between the points when closed, turn engine until paper releases that's the firing point.
...and the perfect setting for a magneto ignition is a standard business card width. Works every time!

I had my steering rack changed a year or two ago on my 97 Camry. They didn't tighten the fitting on the steering rack from the steering wheel. I took it back and said it has a lot of play in it. The steering feels quite light, the steering wheel is off centre and personally I think the rack needs a little more play taken out of it. I like a steering wheel that you can take your hands off and it drives straight down the road with a slight tendency to wander according to road surface.
I reeeeeeeeaaaaaally want to see this whole build.

I'm also a mechanic but I don't actually know what you mean when you say we are using this dash 100 series line for application X. It would be nice to see and have explain the differences in lines, sizes and being able to have a rough idea on what lines are needed for certain applications
Check out the Bedford van episode he talked about. He goes over all that stuff, it's really informative!
With AN fittings larger numbers are bigger fittings. So -8 would be bigger than -6. And they get sized based on how much flow is needed and what kind of pressure it needs. Smaller hoses can withstand higher pressures without extra reinforcement.
And the 100 series is the type of the hose. It varies some by brand, but the different series will have different pressure ratings and different fluids they’ll handle.
Thank you for this - I'm ordering some from Aus as there are no UK suppliers. I'm not even doing this for a conversion, just to replace the factory lines that have perished and follow a truly ridiculous path around the engine bay. About 4 metres of pipe to travel 1.5 metres from pump to rack. No NOS available anywhere and it's only a 2006 car.
would love to see a vid on custom sump building/modifying and oil pick up to suit. especially on an RB. cheers

CarQuest can do up hoses for people in Canada, not too expensive, around $100 depending on the hose and it'll look pretty much OEM. Although they didnt have the right fittings to do a custom clutch hose for me the last time, but brake line did the trick until I got my hands on the right materials.

I have that engine in my VY SS Commodore & I have already heat wrapped the driver's side header (Genie headers) to protect the power steering rack & starter motor as well as other stuff like the heater valve & battery from getting cooked (the drivers side header tended to warp the heater valve) but I would like to heat wrap the passenger side header next.
The high pressure power steering pipe comes into close contact (1 inch) with the exhaust header which tends to make the power steering hard to steer.
I tend to notice that the high pressure pipe also weeps a little bit of fluid & the pump is brand new,I think that the rear of the pump & the power steering pipe gets too hot so I'm going to insulate the exhaust header from the power steering pump.
I noticed that the same engine in the Chevrolet Camaro has its high pressure hose run down the front of the engine to the power steering rack which is mounted in front of the engine so it's routed away from the exhaust manifold,the Camaro uses a different pump as well !
I just made one for my HZ Tonner with a 5.3. Took me a while to work out the left-hand thread bit, wish I'd seen this first.

I know that everything is different down under, despite looking a lot the same, but in the US NAPA will make you up about any hose you want for $40 or so and they always look nice. If the guy at the counter handed me something that didn't, I'd tell them to try again.
So, for my fellow Americans, maybe try that if you don't want to spend the cash for AN fittings and all of that. I'd be happy to make a quick video of the last ones I had NAPA make up for me if anyone wants to see it.
clocking the fittings - on shorter runs, it helps to mark where you want the fitting oriented when finished. There are a bunch of ways of doing it, but it is really annoying to be 180 degrees off and unable to connect the points.

Speedflow 741-06 is the part number for the fitting into the astra pump.

GETTING IT DONE AND DOING IT YOURSELF! me every night before bed
my local shop tha does industrial psi hoses charges me $160 cdn just to fix a hose, which was half the price of a new ford hose plus install by local mechanic shop 430 cdn so i installed it myself for 1/3 the total cost of that shop doin it..
after doin Ls swap fuel system, ive got about 15 inches left of some high pressure fuel hose and enough left over fittings i think i can make one of these from that and just get those adapters, so maybe 10-15 bucks to make a new hose fit :-)

factory SBC uses the sway bar to go under the engine as a mount to go from box to pump .
The pressure lines were mounted to the sway bar from factory to cross over?
Differential shimming, mini spools, lockers??? I think would make a great quite tech.

AN fittings are the only way to go. Make them most of the time because what you need isn’t available and it looks a thousand times better when you’re done.
