His mother lived right next door to my cousin ...he's probably my biggest musical influence...I met him a number of times. He gave my cousin Michelle all his copies of the albums they released until his tragic death in 84....one of the nicest guy's I have ever met. I was all of 9 years old and to this day he is still the reason I sing.

This is top ten Canadian rockin’ roll.

Man, Canada churned out some great bands in the Seventies and Eighties. Prism, Trooper, April Wine, Rough Trade, Chilliwack, Payolas, Red Rider, The Spoons, Martha and the Muffins, Teenage Head, Rush, Bryan Adams….Remember how we could see most at the local hockey rink for ten bucks?

Seeing Prism was my first concert ever. They were phenomenal live and came across more as a hard, rock and roll band. The media referred to them as a pop or bubblegum band and I think it had to do with the arrangements on the records which made them sound a lot tamer than they were live. Ron Tabak had a terrific voice.

I saw this band live at city tv studio's way back when. Sat on the floor directly in front. Sang about 5 songs and have been a fan ever since. Have all the records. If you don't own the record or cassette you should shush and let the people that were there at that time chat. I thank you for your time. He bought the thick as thieves album but a really cool story I have only lived in the lower main land for 20 years before that I lived in Kingston ont. Yes the home of the hip. Anyways I found out Trooper was playing at a bar called AJ's. The ticket cast me a whole $5. I was right at the stage drinking and dancing really really enjoying the concert. Then Brian stopped playing to bend down to shake my hand I was like omg. Then he flicked me his pick. What a night. Going back to Ron he will always be missed after his murder. Gotta ask him next time I see him the details. I loved the song 3 dressed up as a 9 and Donnie and the drummer both original band members autographed my Flying Colors CD. Really nice cool guys. I posted on here years ago about this raging battle you all seem to be having about my long gong friend Ronnie. And yes I'm still in touch with Al Harlow. This (as far as anyone knows) is what happened. Ronnie was cocaine and alcohol free for a long, long time. That I know for to be 100% for sure. Trust me. He was on his way to Al's place for some Christmas cheer. Al had offered to pick Ronnie up, to bring him to his place. Ronnie had said no, he would ride his bike. He was hit albeit lightly by a car. He fell and hit his head. The rest you all know. He was taken from Burnaby General, to a jail cell, because he became obnoxious. Not his fault. Please lets not argue and fight about this. Ronnie was a good soul, and a great singer, and my friend. Al if you see this and wish to add more, please do. God bless.

So glad I got to see the original band, it was the See forever eyes tour, they called the freeze your ass off tour! and I think Bryan Adams opened , but yeah they were great and Ron was the great frontman, ,seen them again the following year for the Armageddon tour with Loverboy opening , but Ron was all wasted and forgetting lyrics almost falling off stage, as it was clear the rock star life had gotten to him , but the band still rocked like the pros they are! sadly that was the last time I'd seen the original band as news came years later that Ron had died a very suspicious and sad death, R.I.P. RON!

I bought "Small Change" when it first came out and thought they were a light pop band. Little did I know they were SOOOoooOO awesome! Ron is indeed a MAJOR frontman. Was? Is. Yes is.
Regarding his death...weird. Wiki says we rode his bike to the band meeting to "get some exercise". Um...on a snowy Christmas eve night? In canada? Weird man. really weird. He could very well have been hit or fell and suffered an unobserved brain injury. Back then easy! To totally blame the cops is really REALLY messed up.
Regardless...band is great and stands up as one of Canada's greatest and really...one of the better rock bands ever. And I say that as a Rush, Triumph, April Wine, I Mother Earth etc fan as BOC, Foghat, Floyd, Iron Maiden etc etc fan .
Enjoy it. Ron would want us to listen and spread the word. Not dwell on negative.

Love this song and hope there's a version of Open Soul Surgery on TH-cam somewhere, which I seem to recall was the second hit off this album, at least stateside or California, anyway, as I seem to recall it got a bunch of airplay on KLOS and KMET, the once Mighty Met.
(And I think I remember hearing it on KKDJ and K-WEST, although neither of those radio stations survived past the 70s, sadly.
Anyone else remember those cool L.A. stations besides me?)
Although O.S.S. was not quite as huge a hit as Spaceship Superstar.
Did want to address the fact you mention being a fan of Canadian rockers Triumph, Rush, April Wine, and I Mother Earth, all of whom I love, also.
But then you list Blue Oyster Cult, who are American (New York), Pink Floyd, who are British, Foghat, definitely British, and Iron Maiden, who were part of the original New Wave of British Heavy Metal, along with Def Leppard, etc.
Just wanted to point that out. Huge fan of all those bands, too, but they're not Canadian. Sorry to burst your bubble, dude.
I'm guessing you probably know all that, so maybe consider updating your post to say something like "along with these other decidedly non-Canadian bands..."
      Just a thought.
      Otherwise, great post.
