  • OK, I understand that 20 CDs of show tunes and film music experts may be too much of a good thing, but at least in this collection you get a couple of discs of John Williams directing his own concert music, plus a few welcome surprises in the "serious" music department. On the whole, I like this collection better than Decca's otherwise very similar Big Box, and I suspect you will too.

    I’m a John Williams fan so I got both boxes and I’m happy to have them! He’s done a new album with Yo-Yo Ma that just came out, too (also on Sony).

    I'll probably get it because it holds some great memories for me, but I wish there was a complete Kunzel/Telarc box.
    Overall, they blew Boston Pops out of the water 👍

    You kid, of course, but Williams and Babbitt actually were good friends!

    Too bad his theme and incidental music for the TV series Lost In Space isn't included.

    Any thoughts on which of the the various John Williams “highlight concerts” collections are most worth getting? We got Williams in Berlin, Williams in Vienna and Dudamel’s LA Phil John Williams celebration (at last count!)

      So stop saying he's doing the same thing, which isn't true at all. Yes, there is some overlap but the programs are different. The fact is that you really didn't look at the playlist of any of the albums and just assumed.

    • @DavesClassicalGuide
      @DavesClassicalGuide  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ErikWoodsCinSoundRadio I didn't say the programs were identical, I said they all sound much the same, and they do, meaning they consist of little movie bits most of which have been recorded many times before, and when you've heard one, or two, or ten of these things, you've heard 'em all. The fact is, you have no idea if I looked at the playlists or not (in fact I did--I got the press releases, after all). These would have been far more valuable had they contained (a) original concert works exclusively or (b) extended suites from just one or two (or three) films, with each disc completely different. As it stands, the situation is a case of "been there, heard that." So yes, he is doing the same thing, over and over. Now behave yourself. You have no reason to act like a dick just because I gave you the honest opinion you asked for, and it wasn't what you wanted to hear.

      @@ErikWoodsCinSoundRadio Thank you! It’s about time someone called him out! This isn’t a review. This is a guy reading a booklet and assuming what’s on the albums. It’s clear to me that he hasn’t listen them especially with that flippant if you’ve heard one you’ve heard them all comment. Would you say the same about all of the recording of Beethoven’s 9th, David? If someone said that you’d call them out on their BS much like Erik here was calling you out on yours. So no, he wasn’t being a dick.

    Hi Mr. Hurwitz, a John Williams question for you- in your opinion, do you think that his music (attached to the famous movies) will outlast the knowledge of the films themselves? Or do you think that some of the music tied to the films is so connected with the films that they’ll always be associated with each other? Just some thoughts.

    • @DavesClassicalGuide
      @DavesClassicalGuide  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think he's a tremendous composer and the music will have an independent existence. I don't think the "outlast" aspect of the question is reasonable, since some of the films themselves are masterpieces that will surely endure as well.

    Leonard Bernstein's least-known mature orchestral work is in this box. The Olympic Hymn was premiered at a meeting of the International Olympic Congress in September 1981. Apparently Bernstein hoped the IOC would choose it for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, but the sports bureaucrats preferred John Williams' "Olympic Fanfare and Theme", and Bernstein's piece was never heard of again until John William's recorded it with the Boston Pops in 1996 (in the box under review, also in Sony's 25 CD Bernstein the Composer box).
    Bernstein composed more than just a fanfare - it's six minutes long.
