A4G Skyhawk on HMAS Melbourne Deck Ops early 1970s

  • Greyscale video with music by TOOL. The pilot closing the canopy at the beginning is the pilot who has a cold cat shot in 889 going over the side. The pilot expertly stays with the aircraft and comes to the surface safely once the ship propellors have passed overhead. He is picked up by the SAR Wessex 31B and returned to the deck. The other minor mishap shows an A4G rolling onto its port drop tank due to an off centre arrest caused by the wallowing motion of the deck in poor conditions. The deck crew put the Skyhawk back on its wheels with very minor damage to the tank and wingtip. The whole time the engine is running at idle so deck crew were careful. The catapult crew do not look down into the fuel and steam to watch the launch, it tastes awful. :-)

    I did two RIMPACs and the 1977 Queen's Silver Jubilee Deployment to the UK on Melbourne. We lost a Sea King in the Indian Ocean off Freo, the pilot became disorientated by the lights of a ship and didn't check his artificial horizon, flew it into the sea at 120 kts. We recovered the crew safely, and one undercarriage nacelle. Later in the North Sea, the Pedro Wessex flamed out on take off, it landed on the sea and the flotation gear deployed perfectly.. But when a destroyer went in to pick up the crew the ship's wake tipped the Wessex over. It filled with water and ripped into two pieces when we tried to recover it with the seaplane crane. A bit after that we had a Tracker crash on deck. The pilot thought he'd done a 'bolter' and opened the throttles to go around. But he had wire and it snapped tight and slapped the aircraft back down onto the flight deck. The main gear oleos punched up through the engine nacelles and bit of propeller were going everywhere. Fortunately, no fire, no casualsties.

    At 2:14 Barry Evans goes into the water, thank god the canopy came off. The seat failed to fire, the ship ran over the aircraft and while the plane was sinking, he managed to free himself and get out after the ship had passed. Bloody amazing if you ask me.

    • @stevemccarty6384
      @stevemccarty6384 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you went into the drink and tried to eject the canopy would come off first and then the seat would fire and out you'd come. You kept the oxygen mask on and it'd feed you O2. You'd separate from the chute and the seat would fall away. The canopy and lines would deploy, but you'd probably make it. Might get all tangled up. If you punched out remember to save the ejection handle. If you carried it into the O'club everyone had to buy you a drink.

      @ayfj4572 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevemccarty6384 Don't know about that, if you went into the water and hadn't started the ejection sequence, I don't think the canopy would come off. If you started the sequence when you were in the water, the water pressure on the canopy may stop it from coming off especially as the aircraft sank. I believe this is what happened to a Royal Navy aircraft and the pilot drowned. That's why I believe Barry Evans was lucky as his canopy came off before he went into the water.

    That small deck carrier had to be a real challenge to everyone working up there. Polit's and deck personnel. Salute and hat's off to all those who worked under such extreme conditions. A fellow ABH USN.

    Most are bloody text book landings, a show of just how bloody good our Naval Fleet Air Arm pilots were. Bloody shame we're not still operating fixed wing from carrier craft, as we were bloody excellent at it, and have so much coastline to defend.

    I bet the plane at 4:30 had a full portside drop tank that caused the tip over. Our squadron on the Forrestall would have dropped the tank before landing. Normally we where at half flaps for take off and full to land. Great Video thanks.

    • @stevemccarty6384
      @stevemccarty6384 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is correct, but we drained all of the gas out of the drop tanks first, so they were empty when we trapped to land. As soon as we launched we pressurized the drops to transfer the gas in the drops into the wing fuel tanks. When in flight school we were told that as soon as we launched in a jet plane we had an emergency. We were on fire and we were out of gas.

      In 1968, NZ Govt approved the purchase of 14 of the 18 aircraft required,The delivery of the new Skyhawks. ,from the USS Okinawa in Auckland 1970 Of the 24 Skyhawks that saw service in the RNZAF over some 31 years, seven aircraft were destroyed in accidents and, sadly, three pilots lost their lives. From 1970 until the aircraft were withdrawn from service in late 2001, there were a total of 168 pilots who flew RNZAF Skyhawks.

Then the war ended and UK decided to keep HMS Invincible and the Australian government decided not to buy a replacement carrier due to budget cuts, and so till this day we do not have any aircraft carriers in our navy...

      Before you "hit the boat" you practiced Field Carrier Landing Practice over and over again and for a month or so or more. When I rolled in on the ball I felt totally at home. You do not look at the deck (spot the deck). You look at the ball and your lineup. Everything else takes care of itself.
