I figured out the coding scheme and check digit by myself, using pen and paper, by trial and error, way back in 2000! Took me 5 months.
You need to only consider the digit in the units place of the total, and subtract 10 from it. That gives you the check digit. If that digit is zero, the check digit is also 0.
e.g. if the sum is 76, forget the 7, and do 10 - 6 = 4. If the sum was 70, forget the 7, and the check digit is 0.
