The reason why the yellow box cutter doesn't lock open is because they are provided to workers in places like Sam's club and Costco to cut up boxes, but they don't want the workers to just carry around an open blade, you hold the blade open stick it in the box and pull, and when it gets through the box it automatically goes back in, so it's "safer"

Ahh yes. This is why common sense doesn't exist anymore. Id be insulted if my employer didnt trust me to safely carry a box cutter lol
I don't know man all the bags of TSA confiscated knives I've seen look like knives that are 100 for $100 on cutlery corner.
