Chopping First Cutting Hay at Keller Farms near Burkettsville Ohio

  • Video from Keller Farms in Burkettsville Ohio as they mow, merge, chop and haul their first cutting of alfalfa back to the farm where they push and pack it on a silage pile. This video was actually shot in May of 2018 but I had misplaced the SD card with the drone footage and recently came across it. Due to the rainy weather for this spring of 2019 planting and haying is way behind as I edit and upload this video

    Spent a lot of time on a 460 and 560 growing up. They had their good and bad like all brands but one thing I loved as a 12 year old kid was driving down the road between fields. Them things would move!! At least back then it was fast and for a kid used to Masseys that weren't known for their road speed normally. I'll stop rambling. Nice video Mike

    Very cool, and kind of a unique approach. 2wd tractors all widened up, front/rear unload wagons on running gear, center pivot moco, upright silos still in use... I'm from NE WI (from your description, it sounds like this area has traditionally had similar types of dairy operations as us), and when I was growing up an operation like this would have been unimaginably huge. Now it's almost quaint.

    Mike Thanks for showing the IH 460. Was one of the first tractor I can remember my dad owning. It was a big tractor in our area at the time. I can remember it running the forage harvest or and belt driving the thresher machine. Who would think they would still be using a 55 year old ?? Tractor on what obviously is a modern farm. Must be a family jewel !! I know I would love to own it. Dad had a front mounted snow blower on his and we had a lot of snow and a long lane way to town so it got lots of use in the wintertime....

    I didn't notice a single fire ant mound in the entire video. So very lucky!! We just finished our first cut of close to eighty acres here in southern middle Tennessee. I bet we hit at LEAST 75 mounds in that hay ground. Terrible!! Try laying on the ground to fix something with those things on the warpath.😬

The left and right seem to be the same but just the center has the video. Sometimes the sides are black or blurred video. Second, what video editing software do you use. Is it for OS or PC.

    • @farmhandmike

      Because it is hay. Thats what we say. It's not silage/haylage until after it's chopped in my opinion. We don't say we're going out to mow and rake silage. We are going out to mow, rake and chop hay.

    Mowing round and round is literally the dumbest thing I've ever seen, loose so much efficiency with the mower and chopper

    • @Gixzer04
      @Gixzer04 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The instant you stop putting forage through your head you lose all productivity N will continue to run the entire length of field as opposed to cutting acres per hour n never being stagnant. Some scenarios its best but not when you are in wide open long straight fields like this. you can rake or merge it accordingly not decisive on the mower .

    • @farmcentralohio
      @farmcentralohio 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So how is it supposed to be done? Since you're so smart please share with us the proper way of doing it. The time wasted at the end of a row swinging a mower if it's capable or running across end rows to get to the other side is literally the dumbest thing I've ever heard of :) actually try it sometime, in real life , not on your farm sim. add up the time and then you'll realize your comment is full of %$#

    • @ChalkyDaBoss
      @ChalkyDaBoss 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So constantly reducing the length of each run by going round and round, thus increase the amount of turns as the area decreases is more efficient. And mowing the longest runs you can with the exact same turn each time is less productive.
      That doesn't add up, also you have to go and cut the corners again because you've missed a load..that's efficient. God bless murica

    • @farmcentralohio
      @farmcentralohio 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ChalkyDaBoss Looks like it works for them :) The more time the mower is cutting the more production you're getting. No hay is hitting the ground when you're turning on the ends. And it depends on the field, they just happen to be in one that they feel like mowing like this to stay ahead of the chopper. If it was long and narrow they probably don't do this. Heck I've mowed in circles before just to piss off my brother the raker/baler at that time. and you are correct, God Bless America

    • @Gixzer04
      @Gixzer04 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ChalkyDaBoss not sure if we’re talking bout turning or putting tons of forage on the ground now ? This isn’t your backyard we’re mowing. N headlands aren’t always your ground to run equipment across either. These guys are chopping n moisture isn’t a concern when leaving skippers at the same level of hay making. Even if he only cut half his width running his headlands he’s still reducing his travel n still cutting forage. Now let’s say he is baling it. It’s all bout how fast you can dry down that crop n just think you coulda been baling by now has you run your headlands instead of that crop being the very last pass you made 5 hours later 👌. There may be a point that it becomes too aggressive on pto etc to turn round but til then cut it n don’t stop. Time lost afield with overhead still being used is the worst. Might as well have a breakdown after every pass for 30 seconds.til you turn n drop your head again.
