@@rahdo As a beginner, I like Forbidden Dessert more than Pandemic. After playing more, I love Pandemic much more than Forbidden Dessert.
@@CK-mi3sd i think the problem with forbidden dessert as a gateway is that it's by default much more challenging than pandemic. but that's one of the reasons i like it :)

I love these top ten lists almost as much as your run throughs. They both are so well articulated and thought out.
I have added many a game to my collection after watching your run throughs and have added many to my wish list as well from both types of videos. (My bank account may be less happy lol. But alas that's the trade off I suppose and part of why my wish list is so long).
Keep doing what you're doing and hitting it out of the park each time.

if i don't do it, someone else will, so i might as well save everyone the trouble. it does mean inevitably that people will respond to the list without watching the vid, bringing up things that I address in the vid, but there's no avoiding that...
I used to actually put time links in the vid as well to make it easier for everyone, but i'm too lazy for that any more! :)
+rahdo I find that putting the list on the video description makes me want to watch a video more if there's a game I am interested in or one I already play and I want to hear your insight. I'm ordering Troyes today, it's been on my want list for a year

I don't think 700, or even 300, is "crazy" for the BGG list...you hav to consider the fact that there are 60,000-70,000 games on that sucker. 300+ for Paperback is an amazing position.

I think Paperback is so low on BGG is because relatively few people have it since he sells it from his own website, and not through retailers.
This might be my favorite top ten (besides the anticipatory yearly top ten). A really surprising list with a lot of thought put in and a few, often overlooked, games.
Hi Radho, I love and I own three of your "must have games": Trajan, Castles of Burgundy and Troyes, but I think we can't forget some old giants: Puerto Rico, Caylus, Agricola/Le Havre, Race for the Galaxy and "the 2 players game" Twilight Struggle.

I'm still pretty casual as a board gamer and think of myself first and foremost as a poly dice chucking tabletop rpg player. That said, I'm feeling a little satisfied that I have played two games on this list in the last couple weeks (one being a Crossfire demo at Gen Con and the other being Castles of Burgundy at a friends' home). Someone in the past few days mentioned CV to me as well. I found you while looking for reviews of Mysterium, and now there are so many playthroughs to check out! First though...Paperback. Never heard of it, but it sounds great; I need more games for (academic) "muggles."
A couple of surprises here, mostly Claustrophobia. I guessed Shadowrun right before you said it, and I was like "Nooooooo!" But a lot of great choices here too. As far as BGG ranking goes, I don't think it really carries much weight. Popularity never guarantees quality. :)
Troyes, I knew it! Love, love, love it also. You did mention spoiler alert at CV. A few surprises but another great top 10 list. Well done.
Did you view this last as "collection to 10, but can play other games people have if I encounter them" or "only 10 games I could ever play ever again"?
If the latter, I think I would put Argent: The Consortium on my list as #1. While the game itself isn't even in my top 10 games (probably top 50 to 100), the amount of variety in that box is insane. It is a worker placement game with more variety than even Agricola (which is in my top 10) and the gameplay changes dramatically with a few little tweaks. Being able to come up with that many permutations would really be the deciding factor on choosing a game if it was only 1 of 10 I could ever play.
Stexe yup, it's intended to be a "you can only play these, and no others, for the rest of eternity!" type thing :)
Jaipur really does have great long term replay-ability, we've played it over 40 times and we are still in love with it.

I personally have not had much luck with Shadowrun: Crossfire. I've played about 4 times now but it just seems incredibly punishing and random.
It was a little disappointing seeing some really good games behind you on the shelf, knowing they were not on your list. :)

Horace Watkins I have to agree, I can think of many far better than 7 on his list. Rahdo please try Heroes of Normandie now they have a better set of rules. The new wave of great games should start hitting within the next 6 months and 2 of them; The King's Abbey and Raiders of the North Sea should be good candidates to replace some on your list. What about Lords of Waterdeep?

Love the shout out for Asheron's Call, my favorite MMO of all time :) For that alone I can tell you have good taste and will be seeking out Shadowrun Crossfire which was not on my radar before.
Gut Shot Games AC was the best! i still remember clearly when the town of Arwic was destroyed. Amazing stuff :)
Solid list with not too much to argue about, but I was surprised Agricola wasn't included; perhaps the issue with taking wood in the

Shadowrun Crossfire -- thank you! I'm always fighting for this game's virtues. I only wish it had more prolific support from Catalyst. But honestly, as you've stated about this entire list, it doesn't *need* expansions -- it's one of the most replayable games I own, and I never get that "I wish I could refresh this game with new stuff" feeling. An often overlooked offering based on an excellent often overlooked intellectual property. Keep on fighting the good fight!
Brian Blackwell Personally, I felt like Xenoshyft Onslaught nailed the co-op deck building experience for me a lot better, but YMMV.
Brian Blackwell as it happens, there is an exapansion coming for it this year, and i couldn't be more excited :)
I really hope the next expansion has more two player friendly missions :)

Brian Blackwell They are getting an expansion for it. It showed up on a few stores as soon to be released. Catalyst is of course totally quiet on it.
Discovered Troyes a few months ago after seeing yr runthrough. One of my favs as well now. Pretty good solo game also. Thanks for the inspiRahdo!
Hmm, interesting list. Even as a board game person, Forbidden Desert is the only one on here I've heard of, so I can't criticize it. I don't know what my list would be, though it would definitely include dominion, and maybe Catan too, because there is so much replayability in those, especially when you start adding in custom rules in Catan. Then again, that's only if you could include all expansions in this, otherwise there's a bit less replayability.
Just give us ten games Rahdo, nobody is holding guns.
I agree.. Dice are awesome. They bring out so much emotions in gamers depending on if they roll well or poor.
Great to see Troyes up there, but still a little disappointed Luna didn't make it. It's probably my favorite game after Puerto, and definitely my favorite Feld. Great job though.

I'm eager to watch the next video in the line because...well, really, I can't see how you could have left Blue Moon Legends out. I mean, I don't think it's the best card game out there, but it's really an HUGE bang for a single game. Lots of play-modes, lots of different decks... I hope you'll explain why ^^

22:25 i don't understand what ppl see in burgundy, what excites players, about what. I tried to like it, played it, and it felt so flat. I would be very unhappy when stuck on an island with burgundy..

I'm not asking why Claustrophobia instead of Catacombs, but just: Why no Catacombs? It has a ton of replayability + it's a dexterity game and you always need a good dexterity game. Other than that, great list! Definitely have to try Troyes.
Not sure how much of an impact this has on BGG but I know in the US it is really hard to find CV and Paperback. Shadowrun I think gets a bad rap because it does not hold your hand, but that is very much like the world it is based on. Running the shadows is a cruel game and "Never trust a Dragon"!
I absolutely adore Shadowrun. I haven't played Crossfire, but I'd like to at some point. I love the PnP game, and have a few stories that may sadly never see a table since I can rarely find a group to play with.

Gerald Goodwin As insightful as Rahdo is in his videos, he is just one opinion. There's a good reason Shadowrun: Crossfire "gets no love," and I warn you to be cautious about buying this one. I bought it almost a year ago because of Rahdo's enthusiastic recommendation, and it's been the single most disappointing game purchase I've ever made.
n3burgener well, hopefully the runthrough itself was able to give you a strong sense of what the gameplay was going to be like before you bought? no one should buy any game simply becuase i like it :)
I'm trying to choose between Castles of Burgundy and La Granja. You were so positive about La Granja in your reviews. How does it compare to Burgundy?
both phenomenal games. burgundy is in my top10 of all time, la granja is top 25
Just started playing Shadowrun Crossfire and it's am awesome game. I usually play solo using 2 runners and I love it!
I'm usually not into solo games but can't stop trying to find time to play (go to get early kids... Please!)

Very interesting list, to be frank I was a bit surprised. I'm missing one of my favourite mechanisms which I assumed you were also fond of: worker placement. Where is Lords of Waterdeep, Tzolkin, Dungeon Petz, Targi etc.? I also don't see any good drafting games like 7 Wonders or Nations. Would be great to hear your thoughts about these in the podcast.
Szajko that is interesting, i didn't noticed that there's no worker placement! well, troyes and burgundy are *sorta kinda* worker placement, but no pure examples of the form, that's true...

Kentchangar Nimoghtony lol that would be way too hard. i was only able to make this list thanks to the 'no expansion' rule :)
My first instinct was to suggest Legacy the Testament of Duke De Crecy as a replacement for CV. Even though it isn't a dice game, it has a similar-ish theme and is a superior game.
Then, I thought some more about and realized that neither game really has that much replayability. If I were making such a list, I would probably look for some really epic games.
For instance, I've never purchased Roads & Boats because it's stupidly expensive. But it's a huge game! As it is, I'm better off buying 3-4 regular size games than buying Roads & Boats. But if my limit were the number of games rather than the price, I would get Roads & Boats. Assuming it's any fun at all, it must have more replayability than a game like CV. And I could use the numerous components to play other games of my own design.
Rahdo doesn't like pick-up-and-deliver games, but there's probably some game that is just so huge that it would have lots of replayability.

Really, Forbidden Desert? That game feels super repetitive compared some other co-ops. Surprised you didn't go for something that is highly modular with lots of optional rules to keep replayability high. Like Space Alert or Ghost Stories or a lot of others.

Paperback is only as low as it is on BGG because of limited availability. Due to developer Tim Fowers being the sole distributor. Paperback has been rising slowly but steadily as more copies go out. It will likely break the top 200.
Atlas Films And it also not help that it's only out in English... I can understand that it's hard to translate it to other languages since you need to know a lot more about those languages then just a dictionary can tell you... but I havn't picked it up yet because my english is not that good and I have the idea that can be a problem in that game. When it comes out in Dutch, I'll pick it up.
Hmm seeing claustrophobia, i wonder what would you think of arcadia quest. Don't get me wrong, it's not an ameritrash for eurogamers and it's not a good 2p, so it's out for you obviously, but just yesterday we were talking about how Eric lang seems to focus on minimizing the downsides of conflict and aggression in his games to just keep the fun and happy side of it...
Its a good thing that you can have more games. All the games are good but i would grow tired of then all fast. I would need a game i can create content for myself. Rpg like DnD or a game like ascension where i create new cards for easily.

Troyes, of course. In a top 1 must have game, it would be Troyes. Damned, i love this game too. Do you have "Ladies of Troyes" ? It increases a lot interest of Troyes !

What shelves do you use? I have an idea, but I'm not 100% sure. Do they bow at all? Are you glad you have them over what seems to be the "standard" in Kallax?
they're billy bookcases from IKEA. they do bow a bit unfortunately. i like them more than kallax for the flexibility, but the bowing is an issue
That's what I thought they might be, but wasn't sure if they were the BESTA. I'm trying to decide between the two. Do your games hang off of the front? I know you got rid of your TTR's, but I assume that anything in that dimension hangs off at least an inch?
yup, they do. i know that's aproblem for some folks, but it's never bothered me. iirc there are deeper billy bookshelves availalbe
I think that it would bother me a little bit too much, unfortunately. I had read somewhere that there was a 15", but I think it must have been discontinued since I can't find it online.
Wow. Did not expect a game by Granna to make the list. Did not even expect that people play Granna games outside Poland. Mostly outside Poland people play Portal games, like Neuroshima Hex. Granna is a more mainstream developer mostly known for making easy, simple family games, not exactly games aimed at boardgame geeks. Maybe I will need to give CV a try.

For me, it's would be Hero Quest, Trajan, Beyond the Supernatural 1st ed, AD&D 2nd ed the basic 3 books, Palladium Fantasy 2nd ed, Heroes Unlimited, TMNT&OS, 5 decks of playing cards, uno, scrabble, and Troyes.

Paperback killed Scrabble for me. The game is so good. If it had wider distribution, I could easily see it becoming a modern classic and a common game in non gamer collections - like Scrabble.
at 26:36 Rahdo asks himself, "Where is Agricola?" So, now I'm curious... why no Agricola? Not for everyone, aka the club dice-tower? I'm torn about even trying the Grik.

So it looks like Troyes and Glory to Rome are out of print and cost $100 dollars or more. Would you keep them on your list if you didn't own them already and buy them now to take them with you?
Joy Alich well i obviously love them both, but i wouldn't say either is worth $100 (no game is, really) except in the hypothetical situation of "you may only ever play 10 games"... then i guess money is less of an object.

I feel Paperback could use more "Theme" cards though, like: " Fantasy " for example.
We always considered the theme cards to simply be examples. When we feel like playing with a theme, we just think one up and have at it!

Hmm. Can't say the "no expansions" rule really makes sense to me. Dominion, for example, is still played as a single game even when you have all the expansions. Sure without that rule you're giving some advantage to games that *have* expansions... but they *should* have an advantage! There's simply more game there.

rahdo Wow! That's a great list. Have been thinking about getting many of those, but the language barrier is huge for my family.
Gloomhaven is obligatory, without question.
Pathfinder is in spanish, but it contains spoilers to the role game and I'm thinking on playing that.
Mechs vs Minions is crazy expensive right now.

Curious about Forbidden Desert over Forbidden Island. Both are great but Island has a better replay factor because of custom island layouts (which is harder to do in Desert because it blocks the storm's movement)
dipnlik Alexandre Lima custom islands are nice, but for us, FI was just way to light and not very engaging... super gateway, that one. FD for us! :)

I really dislike Troyes, unfortunately. The dice stuff is clever and allows for deep strategy, but it is soooo complicated, which really diminished my enjoyment of the game.

Richard. After being a fan of yours for so long and watching most of your videos. I am having a hard time believing you can go the rest of your life without playing Agricola or Dungeon Petz!! Lol! Seriously though. I would be willing to wager that Dungeon Petz makes Jens list. Is that why you chose to leave it off? Because you knew they no matter what your Jen would never "exists" without owning a copy of Dungeon Petz so she would have it for you to play? (See how I did that? Haha). Seriously though. I couldn't imagine a world where Jen wasn't able to take care of those cute little pets. Just between me and you (ahem lol) has she ever shed a tear after losing one of her (Dungeon) Petz? ;) I am kind of serious with that question. Jen is such a caring person she comes across as the type that would cry when she loses one of her most beloved (Dungeon!) Petz, similar to the way my wife cries while watching a move or TV show and an endearing character dies on screen. (I definitely mean that question as a COMPLIMENT, regardless of the answer!) :)

I think you're finding these games you enjoy so low on the BGG list because you limit yourself to 2 player games - whereas the majority of top-rated games on BGG are for crowds of people, or at the very least not geared exclusively towards 2 players. Ya know? Food for thought.
