Indeed. He is missed.
MI3 has been getting some disrespect lately, but to me this is the one that save the franchise. This the one that finally gave Ethan a heart and a personality. Going from here he starts showing his age little by little as it gets harder to do the impossible and that just make the movies better for it. There is a real life IMF, but that is the International Monetary Fund.
It has? I’m surprised. This one is great and it set the new direction of the ones that followed. I don’t see what’s not to like.
@@iReiGNxx It's probably some unrelated stupidity about J.J. Abrams' style and ability with Star Wars in mind than an actual critique of the movie. 2 and 3 are sort of unique in that neither really fit the style that 1 had and 4+ recaptured; at the same time, the newer sequels would not exist without 3.
I recently saw an old TedX where Abrams talks about his style, that he calls "The Mystery Box", which I found extremely relevant. He relates it to an old curio box he got as a kid that he's never opened, realizing that the anticipation of what is inside can be more valuable than the actual contents. While this can be true... It also shows his weakness. He is amazing at setting something up that keeps the audience guessing... But he's gunshy about actually pulling the trigger on the reveal, and is not actually good at it. In this case, it was the Rabbit's Foot. It was the ultimate Macguffin, it didn't matter so much as to what it actually was in order to drive the plot, just that bad people would do anything for it. In this case, it works, the thing is bad and dangerous and Davian can't have it; but at the same time... Did it matter what it was if the stakes were world-ending regardless? It's a great idea, but people overvalue his ability to set up and ignore his ability to pay off. Lost is the perfect example.
@Knight-Bishop JJ has more than earned his criticism in recent years.
Also, it seems like he relies on his mystery box shtick way too much. It has become a clutch for him, and he has been lackadaisical in his writing and filmmaking as of late (hello, Rise of Skywalker...)
In MI3, though, the man was in top form.
Tom Cruise hired JJ Abrams after watching episodes of his spy show ALIAS starring Jennifer Garner. The movie is basically ALIAS with a bigger budget and real locations. The "in media res" opening then flashing back to earlier time, the party with civilians, the hero wanting to get out of the spy business and settle down, the traitor, the MacGuffin that's vague but can cause the end of the world, the Michael Giacchino score and that ending are all so ALIAS!

What you're describing are more so tropes of the genre than specific to Alias. The show is way better than any of his other BadRobot work: Lost, Star Trek films, MI films, etc.
I watched alias just bekuhz I heard that was how jj Abrams got the directing job and everything you said is accurate
I love how relentless this movie feels with the handheld shaky camera, dutch tilts, aggressive color grading, and Hoffman's performance as a menacing antagonist - all served in such a fast-paced economic runtime. Must say, one of my favorite MI movies.
This and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation are my absolute favourites from the frachise! Phillip Seymour Hoffman delivered a tour de force performance and elevated the terror capability of Villainy brilliantly here!
This in my opinion is still the most intense mission impossible movie ever.
This is the movie that brought the franchise back on track to what the first movie was building towards and every one onwards is better than the last.
This is when the franchise became its true self. They found their footing and language in this one. I like to think of it as the beginning of the franchise and 1 & 2 are the prequels to give back story.
I just love how everyone calls him Morpheus as a fact. 😂
As much as I've enjoyed the first movie, this is where the Mission Impossible series truly began for me.

Ever since III, the M:I movies get nicely wound and tightened up into the elegant action events they are now.
Simon Pegg is a great addition to the MI movies.
My favorite Mission Impossible. Philip Seymore Hoffman is unreasonably great in this movie.
This is where the movies get good. Still slightly corny action and twists, but Ethan actually looks like he's struggling through the sequences. I love that bro looks like he's tired of this shit half the time and it makes it a lot more fun LOL
For me, the open is one of the most memorable moments from the series
This movie is the one that rebooted the franchise into it's default mode.
This movie has the coldest opening in the MI series! And this is my favourite film from the franchise (even though it's debatable with MI:4); this is purely underrated!
most folks love the newer MI's but MI-3 is my sentimental favorite - it had a love story
This movie really gotten me into the franchise....This movie and next one are top on my list....
All JJ Abrams projects lead back to Alias. Still his best work. Maybe one day more people will rewatch that criminally underrated series. The bomb in the head literally happens in S5E12 which aired one week before this film was released.
I just finished watching alias for the first time last week and I love everything about the show and I wish Jennifer Garner would have been in this movie

This is the soft reboot that REALLY starts the MI franchise. They keep getting better and better from this movie forward! Starting with the next one Tom Cruise REALLY does all his stunts for real!
I miss Rana's black hair, she looked so great with black hair don't know why she changed it. Navi still has her gorgeous black hair but Rana's is history.
I graduated high school in 2007! We had a moron in our graduating class that seriously tried to suggest, "No Goals, No Disappointments" as our class motto.
On the television series, James "Jim" Phelps was the leader of his team and later became director of the Impossible Mission Force program. In the first movie, it was a shock and disappointment, for me at least, that he turned out to be a traitor who sacrificed his entire team just for money! In the movie, it looks like he was just a team leader.

J.J. Abrams, from years of working behind the scenes on many projects to getting major shine with television (Felicity, Lost & Alias) and co-writing Armageddon (no.1 film of 1998).
M-I:3 is his directorial film debut and his first of 3 sequels as an producer.
As a direct sequel to the first film, it's just as good, beat for beat.
Stakes have certainly grown higher as The late Philip Seymour Hoffman is incredibly vicious as Davien.
Hunt and co. still defy the odds even when his potential marriage is in danger.
All over the place and just an incredible sequel.
A really good 3rd film of any series is rare, these days.
This was my introduction to Michelle Monaghan. But I liked her even more in The Heartbreak Kid and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Both movies I'd HIGHLY recommend

I have a hard time taking this movie seriously because it felt like JJ Abrams was trying to live all the fantasies he had while making Alias but with Tom Cruise at his disposal. The fact that he casted Kerri Russell as a spy and there was a training session between her and Ethan that was eerily similar to a scene with Sydney from Alias was a little too on the nose.
I remember seeing this movie at the drive-in when it came out, and when Phillip Seymor Hoffman got hit by that car, everyone cracked up laughing at that

I loved this one…and this was the first one where I felt actually had me excited about the franchise.
Davian's bodyguard gave Ethan a weird look because he heard the slight electronic distortion when he started to speak.
Best Tom Cruise performance as Ethan Hunt by far, none of the others came close to his performance here, also the best villain of the franchise

0:20 -- I am so, so unbelievably sorry about this, but you guys actually reminded me of Rogue One when K2SO starts to say, "I have a bad feeling about this," but gets shushed before he can finish it. It's a really cute departure from the numbered Episodes. I love watching you guys, I've been subscribed for a long time. You're consistently good people, I've never had a single worry about any of you guys. I legitimately thought, for a split-second, that you guys were doing a skit.
I was absolutely 100% wrong, mind you. So I don't mean to offend, but I do think you guys would find it funny.

If you guys want to see more of JJ Abrams work, you should check out his show Alias. I know that someone in the comments said some negative things about the show, but I think you guys would like it. It can sometimes get ridiculous with its story, but it’s so compelling and awesome, and the main character is an awesome spy.
Also; if you guys want to see Keri Russell being a spy, check her out on a show called The Americans. She’s one of the main cast members of the show, and she is a lot more badass and ruthless on there.

It really was not terrible, most reasoning for it being called terrible is the book fans and it straying from source material (like literally every show rendition does) me not being a book reader, story isnt terrible and I dare say good.
