Tom Cruise gets a ton of credit for this, and deservedly so, but Brad Bird doesn't get enough. Brad Bird has an absolutely incredible eye for action. Which he proved with The Incredibles and its sequel. This was his first live action movie and he brought all of his talent to it. He made the devices break down and force it to be the team working. He went all in on Tom doing the stunts for real. Brad Bird started what MI became.
And they absolutely pulled windows off the Burj and filmed it all for real with helicopter camera ships and crane cams extending out of windows, winches and rigging etc.

This and Fallout are my favourite. Maybe Fallout is a better movie but like Suraj said, this was the Fast Five or turning point of the franchise, so it does feel special. And the whole Dubai sequence (climbing the tower, the tense meetings, the dust storm) is still their most memorable moment

  • @k.delpino1124

    Came out near Christmas 2011.
    Major upgrade for the franchise.
    One of my favorite sequels.
Saw it in IMAX, 5 days before it's initial release.
Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Ratoutoulle and The Iron Giant) did amazingly well with his first live-action film.
From part 4 onward, they utilize IMAX technology for core visual scenes in these sequels.
This one definitely proved that Cruise is one of the best actors to ever do action period.
The cast (IMF, villains) was great.
Jeremy Renner was super busy between M-I, the MCU and the Bourne franchise.
Not too many 4th installments are this good.
From here on out, the missions stay fully connected (thanks to J.J. Abrams as producer).

38:16 Actors doing their own stunts is more commonplace in Hong Kong movies, especially back in the 20th century: Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Yuen Biao, etc... Even non-action stars such as Maggie Cheung have been injured doing stunts. The main difference w/ Hollywood is mandatory insurance policies. Hence, safety is still the #1 priority in the Mission Impossible series, making injuries much less common than say the Police Story franchise. Jackie has a permanent hole in his skull while Michelle was once in traction for a month. But even during the silent era, actors such as Buster Keaton were also doing their own stunts.

Tom cruise is an amazing actor, he is known for being an action star but underneath that all is an emotionally intelligent actor, especially in movies like Jerry Maguire, A Few Good Men, Born on the Fourth of July, and Collateral. You should definitely watch those because his performances in them is amazing.

Mission Impossible is such an interesting series. The first one was an attempt to reboot the tv series as a 90's blockbuster, while the second film leaned heavy into the nu-metal, edginess of the 2000's. When Abrams came on board with the third film it grounded the series with more of a gritty, real-world feel. But this film was the resurgence of the series, pointing it in a new, continuity-driven direction. But with the fifth film onwards, Christopher MaQuarrie came on board as this series' Justin Lin (director of six Fast & Furious films).

I love a LOT about this film, but one of the major things that keeps it from being better than Rogue Nation or M:I-3 for me, is it’s stale villain and drawn out finale. A real casting headscratcher.
That and it’s less than stellar cinematography, the lack of Luther, plus the lingering suspicion that they weren’t sure another MI film would be a hit with an aging Tom Cruise and thus were prepping Jeremy Renner to possibly take over the franchise. It comes across as a less confident film, but still a big triumph for director Brad Bird’s first live action outing.
Overall, I’d say it’s my fourth favorite of the franchise and a really fun time. That tower scene still makes me sweat buckets.

Doing your own stunts is rare. I only know of Tom Cruise and jackie Chan and they both have had some significant injuries. Letitia wright injured her should/ribs and had an concussion doing a stunt for black panther 2, but it's very rare. Most have stunt doubles. Tom sets the bar
