There was a movie made in 1974 named "The Night Porter" In it was a scene where actress Charlotte Rampling sings this song. And in a hypnotic and sultry way. Topless I might add. It was the first time I've heard this Friedrich Hollaender song. That specific scene can be found right here on TH-cam. Also starring Dirk Bogarde. A must see I exclaim. The story held much truth to the time after the end of the War.
I participated in play “Behind the Door” by German writer Wolfgang Borhert in the amateur theatre and there’s a scene where German soldier seeks for job after war and he comes to cabaret where girl sings this song and acts like Charlotte Rampling in this movie but with bra on.
Here's an almost literal translation of this Dietrich classic. Nobody asked us when we still didnt even have a face Whether we wanted to live or not. Now Im walking alone through a big city And I dont know if it cares for me or not, I look inside the bars through the doors and windows... and I wait and wait for something... If I could wish for anything...I would be in a quandry about what I should wish for...a worse or a better time. If I could wish for anything... I would like to be a little happier and when I was quite content I could long for sadness once more.

4th line: "...and I don't know if SHE's" in love with me." - Well, this is not a love song. It's a song about one's place in life, how you look at life, and what to expect of it. So the pronoun refers not to an unknown woman, but to the town (metaphor for life) the singer is walking through. The singer wants to know if life loves her. In german, "Stadt" (town) is female, so there is a "sie" in the german text. But in english, you would translate it by "it" (for 'town'). One little word can change the whole meaning of a poem or a songtext. Also, stanza 4: "I'd feel awkward". Not a bad translation, but the real meaning of "in Verlegenheit kommen" is here "not to know what to choose", maybe you could say "doubtful"?
