Greenlandic Mask Dance

This performance was inspired by Uajii, or Mask Dance, a Greenlandic Inuit dance arranged and led by two Pearson students from Greenland and performed, with humility and honour, by nine students from Canada and around the world. Students shared that Uajii is one of the oldest dramatic expression among the Inuit People of Greenland and has been used as a tool to educate and address taboos, as it plays with three main elements: fear, humour and sexuality. It is a way of dancing like the spirits Greenlandic people call Tupilak, spirits that can transform from one animal creature into another, spirits that can both help and harm.

As a Greenlander i'd like to make a correction: it's Uaajeerneq. Another one: Uaajeernaq is not entertainment, there isn't normally this kind of music and these dances. You're right about the three elements of Uaajeerneq: Humour(making fun of people and making fun of yourself), fear(so that the audience may learn how to deal with fear in their lives) and embracing sexuality but none of that is showed in this footage.
I'd like to add that the red paint symbolizes blood, our lives. The black depicts respect for the unknown and the white to honour our ancestors so that we may never forget our roots.
Tupilak is an item carved from ivory or bones that is possessed by a spirit with the purpose of fulfilling the wish of the one who made the tupilak.
