This is a beautiful blanket. I was going to make my great granddaughter a blanket for her bed & I got the moon mist in the ice cream yarn. I didn't realize the color I got wasn't bright colors. I love it but for a 7 year old I wanted a brighter version of these colors so I'm really happy to see you using the UBE. Now I know it's the one I want. I'm definitely doing this blanket for her. I had better luck when I started Row Three with a standing double crochet, then skipped one stitch and went into the next stitch with my jelly bean. My stitch count remained the same and an even number for all rows when I did this.
I love this pattern and the color way of the yarn so I ordered enough to do this same project. I don’t know what’s going on at Lion Brand but the yarn is disappointing, to say the least. Sections of yarn have been stretched/too tightly wound during manufacturing making the yarn thin (like a 2 weight would be my guess). The color way, while pretty, isn’t as vibrant as in your video though that could simply be my device. I just wanted to offer the info to those who might be wanting to get this yarn. I’d suggest another brand that has more consistent manufacturing. All that being said, thanks for this tutorial! This is an easy and fast pattern. New sub here. 😊
Thank you for that info - I too have noticed some yarns not being as thick (or thin) as they used to be and as they are classified as being. I thought (and I could be wrong) that some manufacturers - not sure about Lion Brand - have started manufacturing their yarns in different places which could be a cause of the weight issues. I much prefer buying yarn in person where I can see and feel each ball, however, lately the yarn stores do not have much, if any, selection in yarns which is sooo disappointing. You almost have to buy online these days and you never know what you'll get! :( I'm glad you enjoyed this patter/tutorial. It is definitely one of my favorites!
I agree about it being better to be able to see and feel the yarn before buying, but where I live, my craft stores don’t have a big selection on hand. Now that I have worked a very small portion of this pattern, I have noticed I am doing something wrong. Somehow I am increasing stitches on every row, so will you please clarify where to make the last stitch on the each of the three rows? I am an experienced crocheter, but for the life of me I can’t figure out what I am doing wrong. 😳😊 Edit: I figured out what I was doing. 🙃
For this pattern, the ch 2 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch. When you are working the bead "bean" stitch row (row 3), the last stitch is worked into the top of the ch 2 from previous the row. Row 4 ends with a hdc into the top of the turning chain. Row 5 ends with a hdc into the hdc that started row 4. What could be happening is that you are putting a hdc into the ch 2 and adding that extra stitch as your working those hdc rows.
@@bitknits I was definitely not paying attention to my last stitches on each row. Your suggestion in the video about counting really saved my sanity! It was really bugging me how such a straightforward pattern was giving me fits. It wasn’t the pattern at all. ☺️

The ends can be confusing! Just make sure you are going into the top of your turning chains and the end of the rows - they can be really easy to miss! And the best way to make sure you're stitch count is right (if you get the feeling you're off) is to count your stitches across to make sure you're on track. :)
I don't have a tutorial/video on chenille booties yet, but I did just get some of that yarn not too long ago and that would be an excellent way to use it! I'm going to add this idea to my list and work on a pattern in the upcoming year! ☺
I really want to start and try to make this blanekt for a newborn nuteral colours, but the ice cream yarn has got anything I'm interested in would a 90%acrylic yarn and 10% alpaca yarn be a good choice for a babies please I'm so stuck it is a cake of yarn I found so hoping I can buy two and the colours will match up
Hi! This pattern can be made with really any yarn. As far as if the 90% acrylic 10% alpaca for a baby blanket, it could be fine but some people do have alpaca and wool allergies so it really depends on the person (baby). 10% isn't a lot of alpaca but some people are more sensitive so that's something to think about when making baby items.
That should work! If you find that it is working up in a way that doesn't look quite right, try adding in a few extra stitches and that might help too!

I definitely used a larger size hook than what the yarn recommended. This was a 3 weight (thin) yarn and I did use a 6mm crochet hook (although the yarn recommends a 5mm). But you can make this with whichever hook size is most comfortable for you. The only difference is the overall size of the blanket. A smaller hook will create a smaller blanket. I used the larger hook so that this would work up faster as well have have slightly larger stitches.
Welcome to the wonderful world of crochet!! If you are following the pattern with my stitch count (140 for the foundation chain, and 138 stitches for each of the following rows) then you should have a total of 138 stitches on each row. This pattern can be made with any multiple of 2, just remember what your stitch count is in case you need to go back and count later on - especially if you think you may be missing stitches further up the blanket!
This pattern works with any even number for your foundation chain (any multiple of 2). I chained a total of 140 for my foundation chain. Hopefully this clears things up! :)
You can definitely use a 4 weight yarn for this blanket, you just may get a slightly larger overall blanket, but using a larger weight yarn won't affect the overall pattern :)

You can do it! One of the things I love best about crochet is that it is very forgiving, and you can often adjust things to make it work (and no one will ever know!). The ends can be a bit tricky since you need to have a stitch that acts like a post so each side stays even. There are times I'm sure I've added one too many of a stitch in a row, especially after I get a pattern down and think I can just fly through it! *Usually* I can adjust my errors to make them fit in, and adding a border to the blanket does help straighten things out and pull the whole thing together :) My blanket wound up being about 45 inches tall and 30 inches wide (3.75 feet by 2.5 feet).

Hi! I'm not sure if the yarns would be different, although maybe it depends on where the yarn was made? It could be the camera and/or lighting in the video which gives a little sheen to the yarn too!
Hi! I believe a 4ply is much thinner and is equivalent to a fingering weight 1 or even a 2, depending on the yarn! A 4 weight yarn would be classified as an Aran weight and is a bit thicker than a DK weight yarn. I hope this helps!!
Yikes not use to using a huge 6mm, it was the worst. Chaining then hcd back wow took me for ever. Lol. The yarn said a 5 hook. I feel uncomfortable using a 6 so have decided to used the 5.5 hook. Hope this will be ok…
Thank you! It is definitely more of a yarn eater because of those beans/puffs. I was able to get a nice size crib blanket (45"x28" approximately) with 3 balls (394 yards per ball) of the Lion Brand Ice Cream yarn.
@@bitknits thank you for your reply. If I may ask another question. I purchased the same yarn Lion brand icecream. UBE. Love the gorgeous colours…the recommended hook size is 5mm, but you used 6mm . Was there a reason you chose the 6 mm and should I do it in the 6 mm hook ?
The hook size is just a recommendation, so you can use any hook size you'd like, but a smaller hook will give you a smaller overall blanket, a larger hook will give you a larger overall blanket. Also, the larger hook (for me at least) helps to create the "beans" without too many problems. Sometimes when you work bean or puff stitches it is hard to pull through all of the loops on your hook when using smaller hook sizes. Using a 5mm or a 6mm hook shouldn't change the overall size all that much though. I would use the hook that you are most comfortable using. Hopefully that helps! :)
After your last bead stitch you skip a stitch and work a double crochet into the next 2 stitches (the last dc stitch is worked into the top of the last hdc of the previous row.) Hopefully that helps!

I like the pattern but using 3 light yarn is hard to work with I like 4 worsted .

Hi! I'm not sure if the yarns would be different, although maybe it depends on where the yarn was made? It could be the camera and/or lighting in the video which gives a little sheen to the yarn too!

Hi! I believe a 4ply is much thinner and is equivalent to a fingering weight 1 or even a 2, depending on the yarn! A 4 weight yarn would be classified as an Aran weight and is a bit thicker than a DK weight yarn. I hope this helps!!

Yikes not use to using a huge 6mm, it was the worst. Chaining then hcd back wow took me for ever. Lol. The yarn said a 5 hook. I feel uncomfortable using a 6 so have decided to used the 5.5 hook. Hope this will be ok…

Thank you! It is definitely more of a yarn eater because of those beans/puffs. I was able to get a nice size crib blanket (45"x28" approximately) with 3 balls (394 yards per ball) of the Lion Brand Ice Cream yarn.

I am about to start this blanket just a question…why did you choose to use a #4 weight in your boarder ?..
I wanted to use the white in the border and only had a 4 weight in white in my stash. If I had a 3 weight in white I probably would have used that. 😄
@@bitknits thank you for your reply. If I may ask another question. I purchased the same yarn Lion brand icecream. UBE. Love the gorgeous colours…the recommended hook size is 5mm, but you used 6mm . Was there a reason you chose the 6 mm and should I do it in the 6 mm hook ?
The hook size is just a recommendation, so you can use any hook size you'd like, but a smaller hook will give you a smaller overall blanket, a larger hook will give you a larger overall blanket. Also, the larger hook (for me at least) helps to create the "beans" without too many problems. Sometimes when you work bean or puff stitches it is hard to pull through all of the loops on your hook when using smaller hook sizes. Using a 5mm or a 6mm hook shouldn't change the overall size all that much though. I would use the hook that you are most comfortable using. Hopefully that helps! :)
Why did you skip the last bead??

@@bitknits The very last in the very first row of beads. Just left the double crochet empty and did a half double in the last stitch 🤔
After your last bead stitch you skip a stitch and work a double crochet into the next 2 stitches (the last dc stitch is worked into the top of the last hdc of the previous row.) Hopefully that helps!
