In a public poll held in 2001 by Reuters which was attended by 200,000 participants, people voted Schmeichel as the greatest goalkeeper ever. They voted Schmeichel ahead of Lev Yashin, who is the only goalkeeper to win the Ballon D’or.

Schmeichel was born in Gladsaxe, Denmark. His mother was a nurse while his father was a Jazz musician. At the age of 8, Schmeichel played his first game for a team in his suburbs known as Hoje Gladsaxe. After remaining unbeaten for 2 years, he moved to a new club BK Hero.
