    You could of fab'ed that simple set of dumps with about 6 bends in the same time you played around with $1200 of legos.

      @@cody2254 I'm gonna be honest, that setup didn't show them off in a way that really benefited them but it could be really useful.
      I really like the look of the old school 2 stroke exhausts made up from what to be blunt is far more cuts than is necessary and the shogun look like a good way to ensure I get that sort of look in a way thats QUICK to mockup and tack.
      Would I do the whole system, probably not, can I see a use sure.

      @@jediknight1294 funny you say that, I love 2 strokes, just had my first TRX250R 3 years ago, gonna get another one then a Banshee next before I get another 450... may do the Electric swap though, rich rebuild Raptor E Swap is really nice (his cyberquad build) but I want to build one that setup for moto and dunes and I am debating between a trx450r e swap or a raptor e swap or a 400ex e swap just cause I loved the 400ex lol.

    Make sure the customer knows what to expect and what the look is going to be with the “lobster” bends. I built a similar exhaust. When completed, the customer did not like the multiple welds, so he had me grind them down smooth. I got paid right for the extra welding, but it still hurt to know that i could had built it off from regular mandrel and be done faster

      Problem is casting is expensive in small to medium quantity, something like this the moulds aren't going to last that long and they will be fairly labour intensive.
      The question is like the man says where do you want to spend the money, on the materials or the labour time. For a home builder who is going to tack and take to a buddy to finish the welding I can see the temptation. Similarly having a couple to do a small portion of the exhaust or for the look of the scallopping and blueing of the welds.
      End of the day its just another tool in the toolbox.

  • @Troph2
    @Troph2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It would be nice if they sold 2-3 pre welded, I imagine 85% of situations could be done with sets of 2-3s, and would reduce the weld time even further.

  • @HardwayRanch
    @HardwayRanch 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    I suppose if covered with heat-wrap it will look just fine. But as a bare metal finish I think it looks like crap. I agree that the product cuts labor costs if this is important, but for a hobbyist the cost is outrageous and the product takes away from the creative experience of working from scratch. If left exposed, to me, it looks like a blatant display of money thrown at a project.

    • @jediknight1294
      @jediknight1294 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For a hobbyist it isn't really that different cost wise because you have to look at the time in the same way as a professional builder would. Would I have paid an extra 150$ to save 3-5hours of my free time on the exhaust fab that I could spend on the paint or somewhere else on the project when I was working and at school 50-60hours a week and building in my free time. Fuck yes I would.
      As for looks, thats always a personal thing, I'm not a huge fan of the scallops but I like the blued rings from.the welds for the style of bike I like and want to build for my next one.
      If I was aiming for an ultra clean exhaust that looked one piece and seamless, I'd do what I've always done, work from a box of offcut and fuckup bends I acquired from a mate at an exhaust shop, mock up with welding wire and sit and make cuts and spend 15-20 hours on the thing swearing a lot and setting fire to the workbench, and ending up using 2x the length of material than I needed because I get passed off with the design or fuck up a curve or 2.
      Its all about having options and tools in the toolbox, I'm never going to see we need less options or ways to make a custom part available

      If you factor in the time and everything it might be worth it. If you want your bike back sooner than later also, time is money. Depending on what the hourly rate of the fabricator is, if it saves 2 hours of labor @100$ an hour or more, you could get 10+ shogun cuts for the same price and have the product done 2 hours earlier.

    • @jameswoodsist
      @jameswoodsist 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      as a professional fabricator i couldnt justify the cost at all. not when a 10 foot section of tube (enough to do several of these motorcycle exhausts) costs as much as a single shogun cut. the price is just not viable imo. any fabricator that has the skill to attract a customer willing to pay 1200 dollars for an exhaust should be able to do a pie cut exhaust from regular tubing that looks just as good if not better in a reasonable time frame.

    • @TrojanHorse1959
      @TrojanHorse1959 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm just trying to understand how they would rob you of power.
      Do you know how or why they would?
      EDIT: Nevermind, I found some info. It says the effect is minimal at only 2% - 3% and this below.
      "A straight pipe, for example, can cause exhaust gas velocity to increase. This will likely reduce engine performance below 2,000 or 2,500 RPM, making your vehicle a little slower to launch from a stoplight. Your engine may show more horsepower on a dyno - and might even finish the quarter mile a little faster - but it won’t be faster on the street."
      Not enough to worry too much about IMO.

    So after you fab it up with those things. Take that pipe profile to a mandrel bending shop and have it done properly in seamless pipe so there is no edges to create turbulence inside the pipe which WILL happen with all those pieces.
    This is how a backyard hack makes an exhaust. If youve never had a formal education in pneumatics and hydraulics then you wouldn't know how bad a little edge or angle in a pipe adds turbulence to the flow.

    Why not just buy the plastic snap together pie cuts there reusable there cheap snap them shape them then messure cut your pipe bend it done.

    • @TheFabricatorSeries
      @TheFabricatorSeries  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thunder god Because you wouldn't have pie cuts is you use bends. The point of pie cuts is to keep them pie cuts. It the end user wants bends, they'll use bends instead.

    ok, $20 per pie is crazy, i get the time savings but at that price i dont see it saving any money

  • @someRandomUserAccount

    they call them shot gun cuts because someone has to hold a gun on you to buy them

  • @billythebake
    @billythebake 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have always thought this 'pie cut' and 'lobster cut' stuff looks like somebody was too ghetto to buy proper fuckin' mandrel bends.
    The only reason I could see for this product is to mock up - so you can cut some bends to the correct angles.

    It looks like the flex vent on the back of my clothes dryer. And that kit only set me back about $15... No disrespect intended to the quality of your work.

    So the money goes to the supplier while the builders loses some cash. Besides that,those scallops just don't cut it for 20 bucks a pop. Imagine the cost for v8 headers,way out of my range for sure. Good video though, something new on the motorsport market.

    I dig short pipes (with baffles) but the position of these pipes are horrible. right underneath the pegs where your foot will be? Yikes!
