Those weights make 0 sense from a physics standpoint. If you kick somebody with that much weight, it'll definitely give you more damage. Also it would greatly protect his shins. If you take them off, you'll be losing a lot power even though you're faster. But the show doesn't acknowledge this and only show the weights as a handicap. If someone kicks you with a ton strapped to their ankle, that'd be hella more damaging then if then fast kicks. If the show was more practical, those weights would be considered Lee's weapon of choice vs Garra's sand.

@@XLTBlarg It had it's highs and lows though. You can kinda tell how much went into the chunin exam preliminary rounds because the animation in the second round (Sasuke v. Gaara in particular) has some *rough* spots lmao

the reason why this particular fight is so freaking good, is because this is when gaara was a murderer, and everyone feared for rock lees safety, because he doesn't know anything but taijutsu. little did any of us know, this man has been training for years with an extra ton (2100 lbs). and I believe he was the first to not only hit gaara, but broke through his seemingly impenetrable defense. 🔥🔥🔥🔥

@@endyourway8751 that's what I was thinking. I know they fought once but lee wasn't even using his full speed so how would Kakashi explain just how fast he was moving and train Sasuke to reach such a level? Unless the sharingan's hidden ability is data transfer...

This fight is what ultimately got a lot of people into Naruto, and introduced an antagonist who would make a major change to the plot. This is the first time they encountered someone their age, other than Haku, being very dangerous and believably unbeatable.
This fight is when things, arguably, started getting serious.
The moment when Lee took of his weight he could beat half of his generation, without even use gates

Yeah, I didn't remember it being this good when I first watched it.
2000s anime already had a decent amount of sakuga animators actually. But they were there, albeit rare, even in the 90s. The legendary Yutaka Nakamura first got the spotlight in the late 90s. But ultimately, I don't think being a 2000s anime means it doesn't have great animation. Just that there's a significant abundance of great animators nowadays, likely inspired by the OGs.

Back when there was no youtube or normal working websites where I could watch anime. My friend hyped up this show called Naruto and gave me a CD which he put some random Naruto episode on it. My brother helped me with the video player and we watched the show together. It was the episode with Rock Lee vs Gaara. And holy crap, what an episode to start the show.
One of the best fights in anime. It was so unexpected, that this fight was going to be so good. It went to epic levels. Lee wasn't really taken seriously up to this point, and we didn't really know much about him, but boy did he surprise us all!

Oh Lee? Well to be fair he did try to fight when he was still healing from the damage caused by Gaara. Other times he didn’t really intend to win fights, mostly he just wanted to buy some time.
Lee prefers fighting with others beside him, because he knows his own strengths and weaknesses. He can’t take on many people by himself unless he constantly uses the Gates or Lotus, which as we see in this fight is exhausting.

considering how this fight went, I believe they robbed Rock Lee of quite a few well deserved wins. He should have definitely won some of these fights.

Honestly Genjutsu if used correctly can be so OP. Imagine putting people in Inception to train every jutsu in existance.

Why doesn't anyone ever talk about how cool that at this point Gaara's face looks "crazy" and the sand armor is a mask that makes his face look "normal"
Also nobody points out when both Kankuro and Temari mention his “inner demon” being awakened. Which was supposed to be a hint that Gaara was a Jinchuuriki like Naruto.

I've always pointed that out, and to me, shows how strong Neji was as well even at this stage of the Chunin exam. Lee's speed is not out of Neji's capabilities. Team Guy was really head and shoulders above the Konoha 12 at this point.

Why are these obvious fans acting like this is the 1st time they've seen this? Isn't this over a decade old by now? It's gotta be getting close. Also did they not see what Gaara did to the team of rain ninja a few episodes before this? He sand coffined an entire team. They never make an appearance again. Because they are dead. Rock Lee definitely deserved a bit more light in this anime. I think the creators used rock Lee as a Is beacon for hope for the other characters so it kind of worked itself out. But just imagine how op rock Lee would have been if it weren't for his injuries. It shows what a less than talented person can still do considering the odds.
