    Great to see you back. I remember reading that the steering was a strangulation issue and that's why it's restricted. Steer by wire on the new cars will sort it all out.

    • @EsotericArctos
      @EsotericArctos 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In the EU / UK there is a limit on how far the car can turn by itself which is the real restriction. It is not as restricted or limited in the US.
      Steer by wire really won't make a huge difference as it is still going to be a motor moving the steering mechanism and the EU / UK Laws will still be enforced.
      Steer by wire just means that the computer is always doing the steering. The wheel is just a sensor input, then the computer turns a motor. It makes it cheaper and less complex for companies, but in many ways will take away even more of the real feel of driving and connection between driver and road.

    10:40 really common mistake but "dual carriageway" does not mean 2 lanes - it means the road has a central reservation, so this was not a dual carriageway, just a 2 lane road where national speed limit would still be 60

    Hi I just did a Christmas road trip from the northwest to Cornwall then round to Swansea and then back home using the M50 in my M3P. On a couple of occasions it took off the full self-driving central single line and reverted to the 2 outside blue lines. I also noticed that your ride here was with the two blue lines all the way instead of the single central blue line...
    Could you please explain the difference between the two modes and why mine changed from one central line to two and then reverted back later..? - also why the two blue lines for you when you had a destination set..? Cheers! 👍

    Great video the good news is, the government have just passed a law that will allow full autonomy on our roads in the year 2026 on UK roads which is only two years away and then we will get all the Tesla modifications that will allow the car to do full self driving on its own by that time my 2019 model will be seven years old but as I paid for self driving for a minimal fee of £2000 it will make this car very sellable in two years. nice to see back making videos it’s been way too long all the best for the New Year have a happy one Mal

I dont think its right that the cabin camera is required as neither the driver or occupants have consented to being recorded regardless if it leaves the car or not, its still stored in the black box. Does it still function?

    Very interesting. Do you think it's significantly more sophisticated than the basic Autopilot? On those roads, provided you braked and accelerated as required, and manually observed traffic lights/restrictions, it seems like Autopilot would achieve broadly the same thing.

    I recently bought a used Model 3 (early 2020 version, before the first refresh) it has the Enhanced auto pilot. I don't know if you've driven EAP before FSD, but the few things I was interested in was, 1. Does it hande roundabouts? 2. Does it handle zebra crossings and 3. Does it do any better at reducing speed before entering a lower speed limit area, like 60 into 40, which is common in the country side. Oh and does it slow down for bends or still try to do everything at the full speed limit set? Cheers.

    • @NattyFlump
      @NattyFlump 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've got a Model Y with EAP and it doesn't do any of that. Really AP and EAP aren't designed for non segregated dual carriage ways or motorways, so using it on normal roads works but it's not advised because it's not doing any of the automation you'd get with real FSD beta.
      EAP can't do roundabouts as it just follows clearly marked lanes and can't do sharp turns.
      It won't stop for traffic lights, junctions or pedestrian crossings unless there's a car in front of you - but this is purely because of traffic aware cruise control.
      It doesn't reduce speed when entering a different limit, although it will detect the sign correctly. You have to manually change speed with the scroll wheel, but this works well enough.
      It sometimes slows for bends, but not always and it isn't very good at anything tight.
      If you have paid for FSD beta in the UK then all you really gain is traffic light awareness added into EAP.
      I think it's REALLY important that people point out that EAP is nothing like actual FSD - just watch some US videos showing FSD beta in action, the car is far more automated and intelligent in how it approaches navigating the world. Using EAP as if it's FSD is dangerous.

    • @TeslaDriver
      @TeslaDriver  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It’s the same thing plus traffic light and stop sign control. It doesn’t do roundabouts. It ‘sometimes’ stops for pedestrian crossings but only if people are at the crossing (see my last video for that) I don’t think it reduces speed better but cannot confirm that. It does slow for bends but not enough imo, it will slow for turnings off onto another road if you’ve set a sat nav route :)

  • @RobFisherUK
    @RobFisherUK 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    It's all a little sedate for my taste. I'd prefer it to make a bit more progress. One day that might be a user setting. It's also frustrating that there are so many rules limiting it. Eventually I imagine it will work in every situation and be proven enough for restrictions to be lifted.
    Edit: having said that, oof, it really should slow down to 30 before the 30 sign.

    Is the UK Tesla Full Self driving option do any more than a vehicle equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control and the Lane Assist turned on?
    It wasn't a particularly good test as the van in front was probably influencing the Tesla's speed.
    Like others have said, it is good to have you back.
    I would however urge you to edit the drives so they are limited to how the self-driving deals with the challenges it comes across.
    For example, with nothing in front on a 60mph A road, if there is a sharp corner, normally indicated only by chevrons in front, will FSD use the map, and/or the chevrons and adjust the speed, because if it were Adaptive Cruise Control it would try and take the corner at the maximum speed.

    • @TeslaDriver
      @TeslaDriver  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it does the Traffic light and stop sign control as shown early in the video. Sadly o cannot control traffic and this was just a genuine drive that I did with no planning or tweaking to make it work better or worse. Without a vehicle ahead some corners would of been more jerky for sure, I’ll look at redoing it on a Sunday when it’s less busy and there’s an open road ahead 👍🏽

    When the speed limit changes, tap the speed limit sign on the display. This will then set the max speed accordingly.
    It makes sense to me that it doesn’t change it (yet) because you can’t have it anchored all on when it misreads. I’ve had my Y for less than a month and I’ve had it appear to read a new limit off the back of an HGV…

    That was such an easy road to drive on. Not much of a test considering you had the white van there for most of the journey acting as a pace car, so the human driver was making the decisions about speed and braking, and did it better. Speaking as a former Advanced Driving instructor, my opinion of what the Tesla thinks is good driving, is that it would fail a basic UK driving test on observation, hazard perception and positioning alone.
    The vehicle, whether being driven by a person or not, should be AT the posted speed limit when it passes the first sign, not some random point further down the road. Positioning is awful and hazard perception barely reactionary at best. I would fail any person who drove like that!
    Until the general standard of driving improves, this technology will be treated as a sort of holy grail by those who after years of driving, couldn’t pass a Driving Test if suddenly required to do so and without any revision or training. When you can do that, only then can you properly assess what a theoretical replacement for a driver should be capable of.

    I really wish Tesla wouldn't sell "Full Self Driving beta" in the UK, given all it really does is add traffic light awareness into EAP.
    EAP isn't remotely the same as the FSD beta in the USA, it's just traffic aware cruise control and lane keeping with the ability to semi-automate lane changes on motorways/dual carriageways when navigate on autopilot is enabled. The car doesn't have any real awareness of what it's doing beyond speed and lane keeping, plus the normal safety systems to auto-brake for objects, so using it on non-segregated carriageways is just too risky (and not what it's designed for).
    Don't get me wrong EAP is amazing on motorway journeys, 'navigate on autopilot' really reduces the driving load and does a good job of lane changing.
    It's just not 'full self driving' in any sense of the term. Hopefully the law changes and we do get access to real FSD, be interesting to see how that performs on the often more complicated UK city streets versus the US grid layouts.

      @@HopeIsFleeting I agree his description is confusing. All Tesla's have an FSD capable computer, so that's irrelevant. In the UK there all cars have AP but there are two upgrade options, EAP which is £3,400 and FSD which is £6,800. I still can't fathom if use using EAP (stage 1 upgrade of AP) or FSD (the stage 2 upgrade of AP).

    Why ruin a nice drive nannying a piece of tech and worrying as to whether its going to throw a wobbly? Can anyone provide any valid reason as to what the point of this actually is, because I'm seriously having trouble coming up with one.... 🤔

    (21:43 mark) I think the reason the vehicle went onto the wrong side of the road is due to the fact that it's programmed for US driving and needs to learn UK driving infrastructure and laws.
    We Americans place yellow lines down the center of the roads to indicate that the road is a 2 way road. You Brits use white lines to separate lanes going in the same direction and to separate lanes going in opposite directions.

    A question that I always need to ask is: Why need a warning that there's a speed camera? Why not drive the right speed in the first place? The speed limits are there for a reason and Tesla cars are already capable of respecting the speed limit.

    • @TeslaDriver
      @TeslaDriver  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Come on now there’s plenty of reasons, an example being: you find yourself doing 35 in a 30 where the road signs are covered by overgrown hedges and you don’t know the road. Obviously doing the speed limit is the right thing but nobody is perfect, the example I gave above happened to me and I had to do the speed awareness course down in Southampton… it was such a waste of time & money all because the council didn’t cut hedges well enough & I was driving a R8 without camera warnings but if I had this I would have been alerted. 👍🏽

    How utterly, utterly pointless. You had to make so many interventions, pay so much attention and spend so much time second-guessing the software that you might just as well have driven the car yourself and had the pleasure of doing so. No way in hell will I ever get a self-driving car.

      Saying ‘never’ get a self driving car is assuming the tech won’t advance, it will at some point in the next 10,20 years be better at driving than most humans. At that point I’d rather get in a robot car than some of the horrifying taxi drivers car I’ve been in before 😬 but yeh you have to pay so much attention and second guess it, I’m glad that came across in the video as I’m always babysitting it

      @@TeslaDriver It doesn't matter how much the tech advances: I drive (and ride motorbikes) because I _enjoy_ it, and get a sense of achievement and capability from acquiring and practicing a skill and mastering a complex bit of technology. I don't care if a robot driver is 101% perfect: I still won't get any more enjoyment out of it than I would sitting on the back seat of the bus.
      This is what advocates of self-driving cars almost totally ignore: for thousands and thousands of driver and riders, it's about MORE than getting from A to B as safely as possible. Our attachment to it as much visceral, emotional and philosophical as it is practical. It's the same thing that drives airliner pilots to go and fly gliders and 1920s biplanes on their weekends off. If you force us all into self-driving cars and objectively save some of our lives, we'll _still_ feel diminished as capable human beings who've been painfully robbed of something that matters to us.
