15 years later, the crisis has gotten SO much worse 60% of adults arent literate enough to be a productive member of society.

Just peruse any comment strand on social media or TH-cam. You will see posts that are often unreadable, with issues in every sentence. Since about 2018, I have seen constant use of the dollar sign AFTER the numbers. As a former math teacher, this drives me nuts. It’s been sad watching the decline of America in every area, but here we are. I would write a book but I’m not sure who would read it.

How many of you have actually met someone who is struggling with literacy? I work daily helping adults with low-literacy gain the skills and confidence they need to become readers. These adults are tenacious people, going years without being able to read a bus map, or labels at a grocery store. These people are not LAZY, if you lived a day in their shoes you would understand how not LAZY they are. They are from all walks of life, all income levels, and different types of education levels.

Iam a baby-boomer with a high school&some college. I remember even back in the late sixties&seventies, I would go to the library&read for hours but most kids read only what they had too in school&homework. This is one main reason for illiteracy today-people dont practice reading&writing.FYI

Teachers at school did not teach me how to read at all. My mother did. In most cases, children who are good readers learn how to read from their parents before entering the 1st grade. Many poor people work long hours, do not have reading materials at home, and cannot read themselves so telling their child to turn off the TV and read a book is foreign to them. When I was growing up my parents kept a library in our home with encyclopedias, autobiography's etc which drew my interest.

Poor guy. At least he's getting over the stigma and ignorance and getting it done.

If you want to do something meaningful in life, give just one person a new life by teaching just one person to read and write. You will be suprised to learn they are all around you.

I am absolutely appalled that we live in the most prosperous, affluent, technologically advanced nation on the face of this earth and yet we have nearly a full 1/3 of our population that can only read at or below an 8th grade level.

This is true. I've taken college level English courses and still neglect the use of proper grammar. Most people, including myself, do this because proper grammar is looked upon as a technical challenge rather than a necessary social obligation.

Its easy to take literacy for granted until you meet someone who is not literate. Thats because we learn at such a young age when our minds are less cluttered with crap, by the time we reach maturity, words manifest into almost concrete reality as either being inseparable with our interaction in society and each other or something to avoid. I find it amazing too though that people cant read, ive never met anyone who cant. but it just means they never tried.

Agree with laloni on this one, I'm tired of parents bragging about their kids achievements in college and universities, but they do nothing to teach others...very sad and at the same time pathetic.

People who are illiterate are not dumb; in contrast, they're quite smart. They look for pictures or shapes to decipher what to buy or where to go. They ask their family/friends to fill out forms and pay bills. They're very adept at keeping their situation a secret, even from their spouses.
I used to volunteer to teach reading to adults and I admire this man's courage to share his story. Hopefully he and his daughters are doing well.

When I take a buch of acid I forget how to read. If I open a book all I see is patterns in random letters.

I can't even imagine how hard this must be on a persons self esteme. Sometimes I feel bad about myself because I don't speak or read French. If I couldn't read my own native language I'd be humilliated.

French Orthography is frustrating due to being a fossilized escript.

Wow 36,000,000 people, almost the same as the population of Canada.

Madonna's "A Bedtime Story" made me illiterate. The government sponsors it. While I can read basic texts and put together meaning from phrases, I can't read like I used to. I'm probably at about a 7th grade level. Getting through a book is torture for me. I like the Young Readers library, though I am in a literature class and doing okay. It takes me forever.

This is incredibly misleading. The United States has a ton of immigrants, many of them do not speak English well, this lowers our rates

    • @nancyaneke1346
      @nancyaneke1346 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

On the contrary, immigrants/native born children of immigrants score higher than native born US citizens on SAT scores, are more likely to have a masters degrees and less likely to commit crimes and live in poverty. You should research your information on the history and statistics on Immigration to and immigrants in the US. May I ask, where did you get your information from? Last time I checked the US doesn’t have an official language and if it did, it would not be English. It would be Spanish. What does speaking English well have to do with literacy rates? Japan doesn’t speak the English language and it still ranks higher than the US. So you don’t have a sensible reason to claim such an absurd statement. Where did you get your information?

not being able to read, 1 does not make you or someone else stupid. because you must know that there are other ways to learn things. like for example watching movies or music videos and associating words you might hear with words you might see 2 this is also a good way to teach your self how to understand simple words and sentences , sometimes going back to the basics is a good thing to do , 3 understanding the root of the problem, will help you in the long run , when your on your way to becoming a better reader," 4 judging people who can not read, it makes people question your intelligence, you should not judge people because they can not do something you can do," 6 understanding why some people can not read, it is not the same for everyone for why they can not read . for me struggling with reading and writing is an every day battle , but i have been practicing and working on my reading and writing every day, "1
