  • Fox Proframe MIPS helmet review after a decent crash and a concussion. I'd say avoid this helmet and buy a proper DH helmet instead.

I can't understand how mad he is at the helmet. He said that he hit his head on a rock. He said the peak came off in the crash, well it should to help cut rotational forces to the head and neck. He came out of a big crash with just a bruise. Fox would not charge so much for a helmet that would not be up to the standard it was designed for. Plus, yes, this is downhill certified. He's mad the helmet broke after a huge crash, dude, you should always get any helmet replaced after a huge crash. I'm sorry, I can't stand product reviews from people who are not well informed themselves.

@@pukki34 that is an enduro helmet, designed to be raced to go down and up. Trail helmet is open face. Downhill helmet is only designed to go fast downhill only. If you wear a DH helmet to climb, you’ll suffocate. It seems that this helmet saved your life; you shouldn’t be too hard on it.

Just to clarify, linings in helmets are not for protection. It's for making the helmet more comfortable on your head. The protection comes from the foam and shell and its ability to deform when your head hits the ground and the inside of the shell. The eps foam supplies the crash protection not the padding inside. It's the same for motorcycle helmets.
Sounds like you had a pretty serious crash; you survived which means the helmet did its job. Also a helmet is supposed to be good for one big crash. Sounds like you had a few which means the helmet had already lost some of its ability to deform and protect you and you kept going.

That’s good, glad you’re alright. Just saying, it’s not the helmets fault you got a concussion. The materials they’re made of are built to do their job once, like crumple zones in a car. You wouldn’t smash a car then keep driving and fault the manufacturer because the airbags didn’t save you in the next crash when you’re the one that didn’t repair them.

I just wanna comment really quickly. This helmet is a life saver, I’m a 13 year old mountain biker and I was at a Derby Tasmania 3 days ago and I had a massive crash. I was going down kumma gutza on a downhill section that led into a rock garden. I was going about 25 kmh and at the end of the down hill my front tire got stuck in one of the rocks in the rock garden. I went head first over my Handel bars into a massive Boulder and 25 kmh. My head, neck and spine took all the blow. Luckily thank god I came out of it alive and not paralysed. Helmet was completely fucked afterwards but without such a good helmet I wouldn’t be here to type this comment. I was lucky to only have to spend 5 hours in hospital too. This helmet is well worth the money !!!!

A helmet should be replaced after 1 big crash, you had that crash... it saved you. The issue is, the trade off of how much safety gear you want to put up with. A ride with the kids with elbows, knees and a DH helmet on and smash you face off the pavement ? Or a trail ride/ bike park ride with this helmet on ? You decided to go light when there is a 1000 reviews telling you to use a proper padded DH helmet for DH, if you want to ride up with the helmet on (I live in a mandatory helmet country) then you take that chance. Was good to see you smashing it 10 times off that concrete block, it should be scrapped after 1 but it held up with the chin guard... might as well have been smashing a 1/2 lid... chin guard did the job, the polystyrene shell would disintegrate on any helmet.

    • @billyrides
      @billyrides 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

By the way, DH-Certified means it has met the minimal requirements, that base level. In most places you can ride a bike with no helmet, you can ride a motorbike at 100mph in flip-flops and shorts. The decision on your safety is your decision, if I was riding DH, I would have a full padded full face... no point shooting holes in the padding after a crash.

It is a helmet designed for downhill, because it has certificates that prove it, for example, FN1952F. Personally, I also have a proframe and in my opinion it's a very decent helmet. It protects in the same way as a classic downhill helmet and as it disintegrates faster on impact, it is probably better for your helmet to fall apart than for your head to fall apart. And one more trail helmets are open.

As for a helmet that retails for 250$ actually it looks rather cheap. I understand its intended use, but for example the part around the ears - looks really thin, my regular mtb helmet looks much tougher than this. It's a compromise between safety and comfort but I would rather sweat like a pig and ride trails in a DH helmet than in this 'helmet-like' product. But it only comes down to personal preferences.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Just bought one and will be using it mostly on trails and I'm pretty relieved that it saved your chin/face when you went OTB. For downhill purposes, I will buy a Fox Rampage Pro Carbon (or similar) instead of this.
Based on your review, this is a light-weight helmet that is good for Enduro/trails. But when I saw your video, I was confused - then I realised your needs are different than mine (downhill helmet). I've been researching about MTB helmets and Fox mentioned on its website that this is for all-mountain or enduro riders (not Downhill, though it claims to have passed certifications for such) so I'm fine with that - www.foxracing.com/proframe-drafter-helmet/21314.html. If you could change your description (so it becomes more descriptive of your experiences and the helmet specs) it will help a lot like me who is just starting out.
I'm very excited to use this helmet for all-mountain/trails and seeing that it saved your head/chin a few times is pretty re-assuring. Your attempts to break the helmet on solid concrete are awesome. Keep up your good posts.

I was reading that some tests by Snell had concluded a while ago that you want your helmet to stay firmly on your head and have objects slide off of it, rather than have your helmet rotate around your head, the way that MIPS does. And with the open air design of the Fox Proframe, it could easily catch on something and rotate around your head. Maybe not as much of an issue if you're riding at moderate speeds on the trail, but for DH racing, that may be another story...
As others have said, this helmet is more of a trail helmet with full face protection. If you're downhill racing, having tremendous ventilation should be less important than having the kind of maximum protection a traditional full face DH offers. Can you use it for DH racing? Sure. Does it mean it's the best option? I guess that depends on what's more important to you...

2:03 to me it looks like there is nothing keeping the strap from coming out of adjustment, I will stick with D ring buckle. I won't go with this helmet, your reasons are reasonable, I agree with them,.

Thank you for your real world application references. These other idiots like to say "it's a really good helmet, I haven't crashed or anything but I'm sure it'll be fine. The quality seems great." Looks like I'll be passing on this one

Thanks, I heard bad rumours about the proframe chinguard coming off from the helmet, even from small impacts. But this was not the case, I could not separate the chin guard from the rest of the helmet no matter what.

Ryan Bullimore so sorry to hear this ... I believe this is a good light trail helmet for someone who wants to protect their face.. I agree that this is not a high impact downhill helmet
