Not only is it the squatting for 150 pitches, he is using so much mental energy focusing on catching the ball, keeping an eye on runners, calling pitches, remembering the count, and so much more. People don’t realize how hard it is to be an umpire either squatting up and down and focusing so hard behind the plate. That’s why those guys rotate and get days off
Adley is another bust. We were told Matt Wieters was going to be the best catcher in baseball history (both offensively and defensively). He was mediocre at best. Adley is the next one to fail. And no, Ryan, giving Adley $300 million is not going to make him start caring about hitting again. I'd trade Adley right now before giving him a big contract. He doesn't deserve it.
I like Adley a lot but one game against the White Sox does not erase the 8 weeks of July and August. I think Adley will figure it out and get back to that .275 plus hitter. On the other side I think its clear that if you are talking about extending a player then the clear choice at the moment is Henderson and re-signing Santander, not including pitchers. Basallo has just moved up to triple A and he will push his way onto the big league roster by perhaps this time next year or at the lates Spring of '26. We are a better team when Adley is producing at the plate and taking quality at bats, hopefully we will see more of that in September and October.
The situation with Adley worries me. Why? Because of the chemistry he created. Without Adley. The Orioles lose a HUGE part of their identity. Im not sure what exactly is going on in the background but like something JUST FEELS OFF right now with the Orioles. I can't quite put my finger on what it is exactly, but something is obviously off. Why the sudden shift? Is it because of the stress from all of the injured pitchers? Is it he is exhausted and tired? Is he started to feel the weight of the game? Something isn't right.
Adley is so frickin' "all-around great baseball" that we come to expect consistency from him. His catching game is very professional and I bet he helps out a lot of these younger arms with his experience. I love the defensive part of the game and he was letting some pass balls and 1-hops get the best of him lately. He looks like he has the body frame to put on some weight so I hope he stays trim. That way his knees don't hate him later. Also I love how good of an eye Adley has when hitting, but lately he has been crouching too low to get under some breakers. Hope everything sets right soon, he will need to be a superhero in the postseason.
This year he changed his swing. He clearly had more power in the first half, on track to almost duplicate his HR total of 2023. But watching him fall to his knee after each swing and a miss, was tough to watch.
Adley's only 26. I know catching is tough on your body but if he's "getting tired and beat up now" can you imagine a few years down the road. Is he a DH only when he hits 30 years old?
Allow me to take off my Oriole homer hat and orange tinted lenses. Without bias, here goes... Wear and tear discussions are really alarming at this point early in his career especially if all of this is not due to an actual injury. I wouldn't think we'd be already talking or expecting fatigue and wear and tear before a guy turns 30. The organization has to be concerned about this. The guy should be coming into the prime of his career and we are talking about "GLARING" concerns about Adley. Over the course of nearly 3 seasons let's take look at the data...he's a .260+- hitter who averages 20 HR, 75 RBI per year. That has to be under performing expectations. Is there anyone who thinks he is good at throwing runners out? I do think he turns it around and has some better seasons in the meat of his career coming up, but I don't think we will see some massive spike in overall performance. If wear and tear are truly issues now, this will not improve as seasons go on. I think overall what you see is what get have with Rutschman.
I’ve gotten to a point where I find it downright offensive if a hitter takes pitches. Baseball has changed and the game today is built completely around perfection. Managers have the shortest leashes they’ve ever had, which invoked a 3 batter minimum rule from MLB, there are more pitching injuries than ever bc pitchers are selling out from birth on the mound, and any failure to perform offensively as a position player will have you in AAA so fast your head will spin. That all being true, as a hitter today, you’re extremely lucky if you get a single mistake from a pitcher and if you take it bc you’re taking the first pitch every AB, or it’s 3-0 and you’re never swinging, or you’re taking till first strike, you almost certainly missed your only opportunity to get a mistake and do damage to it. Not to mention the fact that hitters that are in swing mode from the jump, all seem to be much better at hitting good pitches, and doing significant damage to them. Look at Santander’s home run chart on pitch location, and we all know that sometimes he’s in swing mode from jump, and others he’s more patient, and we have seen him have multi-homer games, and we’ve also seen an exceptional amount of 0-4 games. We saw Gunnar at the top of the AL MVP list the first half, when he was as aggressive as you could be, but then we saw a much more patient and a much less successful Gunnar overall after that, but fortunately he’s been more aggressive of late and results are improving. I’m not saying it’s going to work out every time, but I am saying it’s going to work out better overall throughout a period of time. Just like how we’ve seen Tony hit 3-0 pitches out of the park and we’ve seen him pop it up, but we’ve seen Adley struggle after the first couple months where he was being patient and taking pitches, but then utilizing it to jump on first pitches to create opportunities for himself. Which is exactly why he should just stop taking pitches and stay in swing mode from the minute he steps into the box and never come out of it. Taking pitches have absolutely no benefit bc it doesn’t mean you have to swing at bad pitches, and our guys are some of the best in baseball at strike zone recognition. So staying aggressive from pitch 1 is the best thing they can do, especially Adley. He needs an attack mentality, it will build confidence again, and when he’s confident at the plate, he’s the best overall hitter on our team. He’s the most consistent, he’s the toughest out, he can single you to death, but he can also hit a walk off homer on a mistake. He’s the best in our lineup at taking what’s given to him and doing damage at every opportunity. He sprays the ball to all fields, line drive doubles and the occasional homer, when he’s confident and swinging the bat well. It’s not aggressive hitting, it’s smart hitting.
I don't remember if he has been doing this since he came up. Did you notice that when he swings he drops to his back knee? It seems like his swing has drastically changed. Again, I don't remember if he has been doing it forever, but if his swing has changed then that might be the issue.
I think McCann should catch more often and give Adley consecutive days off. He's been hitting better than Adley anyway so why not. Something is definitely wrong with him and he is not seeing the pitches or falling behind in counts every time
This is crazy! I was just saying this in my fantasy baseball group chat! Ryan, next year if you need a Fanatsy Baseball Guy for a Channel under Ryan Ripken Media let me know! 😊
Two things. Is there any comparison to another 'cornerstone' everyday catcher with Adley? In terms of slash and catching duties. And second Adley is absolutely the first domino for this magnificent turn around. I would imagine that would also fatigue a young player
If life is so hard for a catcher, why did we draft him #1? Why did we just give away Norby for a bum? Why does our manager keep him near the top of the order? The Oriole's brass has butchered this entire year and now they are really struggling, awful
HE'S BURNT OUT....HE'S TOO BIG TO BAT CATCH....MOVE HIM TO 1ST....TRADE RYAN....BRING UP THE OTHER PHENOM BAT CATCHER....AND FINALLY WIN IT ALL....maybe
@@waynewells3297. I agree. Something else is going on that has nothing to do with baseball. These guys aren’t going to get into that discussion - assuming they have any knowledge of such at all. But could it be a relationship problem ( girlfriend issue )? Could something troubling be going on in his family? Is a significant family member ill or going through a difficult situation of some sort? I’m not saying that he’s not injured at all ( you get banged up being a catcher ) but I think some other off-the -field issues are also going on.
But he is slumping which is the problem. He was a lot more consistent last year. He is hurting the team in crucial at bats unlike a year ago. Can't happen
From all the chirping you are doing, the most likely scenario is these boys are bloody tired af... I think he just got tired. Catching is so very demanding and even damaging. But his arm is kinda weak. Thanks, guys. Good show.

His hitting struggles wouldnt matter as much if he was an elite catcher, but he's far from that. he allows so many SB and he's not a very good framer.
