    I feel sorry for both of them, especially Weslie. I wish the contestants would just go with mono steels and if they want to make it "pretty", put their focus somewhere else when the blade is done.i.e. handles, guards, wraps, etc. I hope she continues making blades!

    It's amazing how both messed up their damascus especially after already seeing 6 seasons of what damascus ends up as. Just do a nice spring steel blade and refine it as much as possible. I'm going with Damascus because if it gets to the fine details blah blah. By attempting damascus you already assured it's not gonna go to the fine details 😂

    When I think about how much did forging change from the days where these weapons were actually made and they can't make good replicas, I just question that why is it better to forge this way, than the old casting way? XD (I know these metals are superior and these methods are better, but it is obvious that some people can't do it O.o)

  • @voteZDLR
    @voteZDLR 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Don't get discouraged Weslie. I frankly think they should give younger bladesmiths like six days versus the usual four to help accomodate for things just like that. But yeah some of those problems would happen to anyone and in a normal situation, you'd just start over and it'd take as long as it took. You knew what needed to be done but just didn't have time.

      Yup, and works just fine of mixed correctly. The brass pins that the judge was looking for are a joke compared to the shear strength of good epoxy. Would have taken something on the order of 90 1/8" pins (shear strength of a little over 410 lbs) to even get close to the almost 38000 lbs of shear strength (.5x6" tang). Because this design doesn't have really allow for a traditional pommel, I would consider it completely adequate.

      A) I believe they have a limited amount of time per day to work, managed by the camera crew following their work. She may well have literally ran out of time.
      B)There are several historical examples of blades that are glued only. Doesn't mean that they won't hold up. Many Indo-Persian swords were only secured by glue (Tulwar, many Shamshir, Kora, etc.). Traditional Japanese swords are merely secured by a single bamboo pin with no Glu or peening, and a tang that's shorter than the handle. I'm saddened that Doug chose not to test it, because it very well may have held up.

      Yeah, historical weapons made for warfare could have been secured with only glue, straps, and such, but for a competition like this the safety of the tester and a fair testing environment are required. There have been blades with pinned, riveted, or other styles of well-secured handles that have failed at the tang, halfway through the handle, at the pommel, or along the blade and sent a piece of metal flying. Do YOU wanna be in the room if that glue comes free and an entire blade is sailing across the room waiting to take someone's head off?
