Beginners Guide to Importing Images into Silhouette Studios

In this video Bonnie goes over how to upload images into Silhouette Studio. It's important when uploading images to make sure it's simple and free for use with modifcation if you're getting it off Google.
Once you've downloaded your image, you need to make it a cutable file. To do this, click the trace button and adjust the high pass filter to get it where you'd like. Once you've done that, remove the image and your trace will be underneath.
To make the petals a different object, right-click and select "release compound path." That will make it so you're able to change the colors and cut them out seperately.
Always do a test cut and click "no-cut" for the parts you don't want to cut.

I wish you could do some steps much slower and move the cursor at a slower speed so that we can see where you've gone on the screen. For example towards the end you were selecting the white area as one cut area and the pink as another but you went so fast that I couldn't see where you were going on the cut commands to make those commands, even when backing up and watching several times. So to be more informative, slow down as if YOU were the student and was looking for that button to make the selection. This is a video for newbies so please try to remember we don't know where all of those buttons or selections are and have to take the time to look for them. Thanks!

Very helpful video! You went a little quickly past the No Cut part and I'm a little unclear as to what Cut/No Cut meant. Looks like it's something I need to know, because I was thinking you'd have to separate the pink from the white layers on the screen to cut one at a time. Guess I'll need to find a video on that feature. Thanks for this video!
Thanks for the feedback Erin. We will submit that idea for an extended video. When you drag your image onto the mat, if red lines dont show up it, the cut lines are not turned on. She traced the image to get the red cut lines so her machine would know where to cut.

I am totally new to a my Silhouette Curio...I find a definite lack of information and guidance out there for the total newbie. Even Silhouette's own brochure, that is included with the machine, is woefully neglectful in any kind of instruction. Their booklet says/shows "8.5" x 6" base with 3 platforms, 1 embossing mat, & 1 cutting mat"....but it does not indicate which is the embossing mat and which is the cutting mat. ...kind of important knowledge, I would think!!
You lost me as well when it came time to the colouring and separating the petals and the centre and outlining of the petals in dark pink, there was just a momentary slight of hand that I did not catch how you did that and then the reasoning of the no cut part...just an explanation would be helpful.

I got confused also on the cut/no cut part. Did you leave the entire image on the mat when you cut? Was that why you did no cut/cut feature on each color so you didn't have to separate the image so the silhouette would just cut the one color at a time?

Great video! Actually found the exact daisy that you were using. Everything was fine until you got to the cut option. I have the Cameo 4 and am a newbie and that feature isn't in the basic edition, at least, not for me. so I wasn't able to finish as I couldn't cut. Any suggestions?
Were you able to trace your image? When in the send area does it have red around the image?

After you color the flower you went to the cut settings now I’m lost I don’t see my cut settings

Video is OK but a bit confusing in certain areas beginning with the Releasing Compound Path. After that the video cruises along at expert speed leaving the novice in the dust. I'm using Studio Basic Edition 4.3.3411ss and your screen tool bar library split screen is completely different than what you are using on your video. Perhaps it might be helpful to include the Studio Software version you are using to avoid confusion as to where certain tools are located. Case in point, the fill tool is not on the top tool bar but can only be found after selecting the paint pallet an doing some panic clicking to have it show up. Frustrating already and I haven't even opened up the Cameo4 box yet.

Very informative video however I can't find the "Trace Tool" under the object drop down menu in my Silhouette Studio. Only options available for me are Mirror, Arrange, Align, Rotate, Replicate, Modify, Group & Ungroup (Both Grayed out), Convert to path, Make compound path (Grayed out) & Release Compound Path... Please advise!
*Update: I found the Trace tool! Turns out I have the newer version of the Silhouette Studio. The Trace tool is now on the toolbar on the right hand side in the program.
The trace tool will be on the right hand side and the 5th down from the top (might be a little different depending on what version you have. It looks like a butterfly in a rounded square
I just got a new Silhouette Cameo 3 also and I uploaded the daisy just like you did put it on my desktop but when I got it into my mat in silhouette a little yellow sign came up saying that it was low resolution and I would have to make the daisy smaller in order for it to work anyone getting that symbol and what does do I have to do
I’m so sick of this stupid machine I haven’t been able to use it since I’ve got it years ago I did all of this and every time I click send to silhouette nothing happens. The only thing I’ve been able to cut is some weird circle thing that’s in the program.
Speaker never identified: !) what material she cut , 2) where to find the image tool, or what the tool image looks like, 3) why the need to cut the image in two colors. 4) Release Compound pass, huh? For a beginner crafter, big leap without explanations. I would recommend to redo this video and connect the dots for your audience.

Can we cut any images from Google? Which image file is more suitable??
Some of the most used file types we see used in silhouette studios are: jpg, png, dxf, and svg. All work great!
What happens when you select the trace tool and it doesn't outline it?
The area might be to light for the trace tool to see it. You can move the thershold up or down to see if you are able to get it to trace as well.

The current location of the trace option is on the right side bar about the 5th option down. It looks almost like a square around a tiny butterfly.

What type of file was the image you saved/downloaded from the internet? SVG, JPEG or what?
This image was a jpeg.

The trace tool can often be found in the tool bar on the right hand side of the design studio, depending on how your studio is set up.
I wish that Trace was still this easy. I hate the new trace 😞
We are sorry that you are not liking the new trace option, have you clicked on the help button at the top page and then selected the tracing images button? This might help with working with the trace option.

You can change the color of the item by selecting the image then the color options will show in the top left of the options bar.

When you click on import to library, and select your image in your file what is it telling you?
great tutorial!! My Question is once we make the changes after importing will it save the image that way or will we have to edit it every time we use that image in a project?????
You will need to save the image so that you do not need to adjust the image every time.
When you sent the image to the Silhouette, how did you get the color to transfer? What color vinyl did you use? Did you just use white?
She changed the color on the page so that you can see what she is doing. You will be able to cut the image on which ever color you are wanting to cut it from. She cut this flower with white and pink vinyl.
