i think i left out a detail: you must sand down the small tabs on the outside of the button you want to use from the panel. They look like small little tabs, this will allow the button to move.
Here's another tip for security: Use a garage door opener that runs on 12v (or wire in a cheap step down converter) and wire the opener direct to switched power instead of using the included battery. Then the opener will only function when the vehicle is turned on with the key.
two pro tips for you to think about next time. 1 - turn some lights on during your videos. my god! 2 - install the garage door opener under the dash somewhere so you can EASILY access it when the battery dies, or you'll be pulling your dash apart every time you need to change the battery.
Not at all what I was looking for but glad I stumbled upon it. Really good design and great explanation of how you did it. Thanks for the idea for one of my next mods!
This is pretty cool! I plan on doing this with my garage door opener ad well. I'd like to add a switch that when you push it once, it closes the switch. If you push it again and it opens the switch. Do they make tactile switches this way? Or do I need to figure in a relay or get a different type of switch?
How would you wire the tactile switch for rock lights? I'm confused as to how I can get power to that OEM switch and connect the switch to turn the rock lights on or off. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
This will just be used as an on/off switch toggle. For a light bar you will still need ..... 1.lightbar 2.wire 3.relay 4.Fuse Red wire to battery then to fuse then to relay. Relay out to toggle switch, ground and light bar.
Thanks for posting this brother, I've always wanted to utilized the unused OEM switch and I've been wanting to find a way to conceal my garage door opener. I'm assuming if you wanted to retrieve your remote, you'll have to disassemble the entire dash?
Great video man, you sound pretty smart about this stuff. I was going to get an older jeep jk switch panel with the esc off button and put that button on my panel where the blank is and hook that button as my esp kill switch, so it looks stock. Any idea how to do this?
can you make it a rocker type switch with push up for one garage door and down for the other? I need to wire 2 switches in and only have one empty "button"
David Friedman I think it would be a little more complicated but with some tinkering it could work! It would be a little hard though. Cause of how small the button is, not much of a far distance from the pivot point so you might end up pushing both switches with one press. :/
Wanted to give you a follow up, works perfectly. If you shave down both top and bottom of the switch i used (3rd from right) the hinge is in the middle and you can put two momentary switches inside push up for left garage down for right
How do you determine which two, of the four solder points on the garage door opener, are the two you need to connect to. My opener has the battery in the lid rather than part of the circuit board. And the solder points are on the back side of the circuit board. It is very difficult to get the battery connected and touch solder points with a test light. Just wondering how you might have done this. thanks
Joe Jojomojo I just got two leads on my multimeter and tested which two solder points opened the garage. I took out the battery and then just touched the leads of the multimeter to power the garage door opener.
Chris Meacham otrattw makes some killer switches. I may mod my dash and move the hazards over and put a rocker switch in for in and out on the winch... usually I have a codriver who will run the winch... I don't want her in the rig if shit goes bad lol
Harold Brown just go to eBay and look up hazard switch panel jeep jk (or something along those lines) and you’ll probably have to buy he whole switch panel. I’ve seen them go for $15-$30 bucks. Or you can hop on the jeep forums and ask around and see if anyone has some laying around.
So you have to take your dash apart every time you need to change the battery? It is clever though. I wish the aftermarket world would make a switch bank to replace the oem, maintaining functionality of existing switches but able to utilize the blanks with light buttons.
Planning on running the halo lights on my mom's 2012 using this OEM panel, and now it looks like I'll be doing this for her garage door opener as well. Great idea, thanks man
Perpetual Student I haven't looked at a the switch panel from a 07-10 (jeep jks with the first edition interior) but I think the switch panels are constructed the same, but with less buttons. The one I am working on is a 2011. But the second edition enteriors go from 11-17
Fred Flinstone thanks! I used a 5mm tactile switch. But this could utilize any size with a little bit of modification. (You could use cardboard or something to put between the switch face and the switch.) Sorry if that makes any sense. I would go with a kit that comes with different sizes or go with a 4mm or 6mm. Either will work. Once you start tinkering with the switch panel you will figure it out. Super simple.
Kind of dumb point to start the video, seem like it's missing a whole lot. Not like there are alot of videos telling you how you got the panel off. Seems pretty common sense spot to start your video from
Looks like Clickbait! I was looking for the switches shown in the video thumbnail picture, like half the people that water their time watching this video. Anyone else find the real video for the Aux OEM style panel in the pic?

Would love a how-to on that!
Absolutely genius
Wish you had shown how to get the switch panel out of the center dash.
Perfect, exactly what I came to TH-cam for. Thank you Chris, and thanks for the replies to the comments, all are helpful.
My mod for this is working flawlessly.

Nice job on the install dude looks clean
NinjaxBart thanks!
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!!
do you know where to get replacement blanks? going to check the dealer but a part number would allow me to order online.
Worth a watch...as of others of yours I've seen. Good going...
cdautrey thanks!
hi! Are you interested in testing new LED tail lights for JK ?
This is pretty cool! I plan on doing this with my garage door opener ad well.

For a lightbar how would I keep the switch open so I wouldn’t have to hold down the button at all times ?
use a traditional on/off style switch instead of a momentary switch.
Do you know the dimensions of the locking tactile switch needed ?
How would you wire the tactile switch for rock lights? I'm confused as to how I can get power to that OEM switch and connect the switch to turn the rock lights on or off. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Love the video, just didn't see where to wire into the Tactile switch itself?
th-cam.com/video/Vu9ZKk4IJos/w-d-xo.html
with the right resistance you would be able to wire into the garage door unit to bypass the battery
Anyone know the internal diameter of the little circle (2:02)?
Thanks for sharing
6mm
Dude, brilliant!
How did you wire it up bro ?
Thanks for posting this brother, I've always wanted to utilized the unused OEM switch and I've been wanting to find a way to conceal my garage door opener. I'm assuming if you wanted to retrieve your remote, you'll have to disassemble the entire dash?
Brandon Koay no problem. And yes. But it only takes like 5 min. It’s no big deal.

The real question here is... where did you buy the replacement banana thumbs and how did you install them?
I’m hoping to modify this panel to flush mount some USB ports
Nice mod... may wire my winch like this for internal use.
Vinnie Gunns awesome! still trying to think of a good way to wire my winch up.
Chris Meacham otrattw makes some killer switches. I may mod my dash and move the hazards over and put a rocker switch in for in and out on the winch... usually I have a codriver who will run the winch... I don't want her in the rig if shit goes bad lol
Vinnie Gunns I'll check them out. And good thinking haha
showing how to solder the wires and where to do it would have been really helpful. Its great to know this can be done but still no clue how to do it
Soldering the wires is not too difficult, and I'm sure there are other videos to help teach you how to do that.
What goes next to right of hazard button?
Where did you get the aftermarket switches like your thumbnail shows?
Harold Brown www.pixeldecals.com/shop/JK-Funny-Switch-Decals
Damn, i thought it was switches. cant seem to find OEM switches for that panel.

Could use one of these.

How well does the button work?
The Bearded Jeeper it works great actually! However this mod is a little hard, mostly trying to get the tactile button to sit right..
Could you wire light bars etc.. to it also??
Craze Mo yeah, it works just like a normal switch.
Don't you need to buy a switch that's rated for the light bar's current that will be flowing through the switch?
@@elchuco9153 Use a Relay
Planning on running the halo lights on my mom's 2012 using this OEM panel, and now it looks like I'll be doing this for her garage door opener as well. Great idea, thanks man
Is this only for specific years?

What size tactile switch did you use?
September Coll the one i used was 0.5 cm in height. A fairly small switch.
what size wire did u use
Brian Phelps 14 ga. a little overkill for a small application, with a short length.
Wow awesome job man I will be definitely doing this to my Jeep. What size tactile switch did you use I see a 4 mm and also a 6mm on Amazon

Are they separated in the bag when you order them from ebay?
Did I miss a video leading up to this?
That's what I want. More before.
Where did you get your switch?
Lubert Macias eBay, there’s a link in the bio
Hello: I think his light switch needs replacing or turn it on.

those are just stickers on the factory blanks, available on Etsy
