One of the best channels on TH-cam. And believe me when I say I watch a lot of golf videos. One thing I will say is I have NEVER been fitted for golf clubs. 11.6 handicap at 63 years old. I rely on my scrambling a lot to achieve this handicap. From 150yds and in I am fairly confident I can hit the green or be in chipping distance which is where the scrambling comes in. From 160yds out I can get close and if I do hit a green it’s a WIN! Thanks for the great common man videos.

Thanks for such straightforward and informative videos! I recently got fitted for irons and ended up having them adjusted up 2 degrees. After doing that, out of curiosity, I adjusted an old Titleist 913D driver I stopped using several years ago to a more upright lie angle. Night and day! It’s back in the bag! I’ve never seen anyone bend hybrids. Is this something that is done often? I have 2 Mavrik hybrids I would have adjusted in a heartbeat based on the improvements seen with my adjusted clubs. It would depend on where you in your golfing career. If you have just picked up a club and you are not really short or tall then, I would recommend lessons and that would include rule and how to act while at the course. If you have been golfing 🏌️ for a bit then fitting that addresses you physical needs and address swing tendencies is a must. Then sharpen your game with a swing professional. If major changes are made the fitter builder could certainly modify the equipment

Hey Jim! I have watched your videos over time and your content is awesome! I always learn something about golf equipment thanks to you! I actually have a question for you though. I recently got new irons all fitted for me and they have been treating me well. Along with the iron set, I picked up a 54 degree wedge to give me some diversity in my wedges, but when I tested the the different options I ended up choosing my wedge at standard specs. The gentleman at the shop told me that if I wanted to come back and have the wedge adjusted to match the rest of the set i could, and I eventually decided to do so since as i started to play my new irons my swing changed a bit as I was adjusting to the new clubs. But I wanted to ask you if the loft of my 54 might have changed when I decided to adjust the lie angle 2 degrees upright?
Andrew..the person altering the lie/loft angles should be able to change one or both of those angles (if they are any good)...it's not like a driver, where they "open" the face to increase the loft.

great info. i inherited a set of ping eye. the grips seem too small for my hand. i wear a medium glove. and i'm not sure about the lie with dots. can the lie be changed?

I can see the importance of lie angle on your board with tape but that’s on the level. On the course you rarely have a flat lie so what makes the lie angle makes any difference

I play with a 1i, 3, 4 etc. thoughts on shortening the 1-4 or to match the 5 iron? Then sequential lengths from 6-9 then perhaps pw, gw, sw, lw all the same length. The wedges im not sure yet that I want to make them same length as I appreciate the utility i think i get on having the short LW. Im going to shorten my driver also from 45.5 to 44”
My old Taylormade RAC TP CB from 2005 had the lie angles set with 1 degree difference from club to club. Now I'm seeing most manufacturers set the lie angles with .5 degrees difference from club to club. So if you start with the 7 iron, you will get 1.5 degrees difference between the two methods up at the 4 iron and then down at the PW. What is your take on this and which method do you use?

Is it easy to adjust the lie and loft to the exact degree , as example if I would like my bend 1* strong do you think any club fitter can easily do it and there is chances it won't be the the exact degree since it is hand made ?
Great video! I had a question. When you strengthen your irons loft, does that take away bounce? if so, is there anyway to modify the leading edge, perhaps taking off a bit on the leading edge underneath to help make the leading edge not as sharp?
That is what Bryson has done to his irons, I've read!

I’ve been told by a club fitter that Ping ISIK irons cannot be bent. True? If they can be bent are they at higher risk of cracking?
Question: I'm 5'5" and have had the same stock irons for 10 years and have self taught myself into the upper 80s depending on my wedge game. Would getting my irons shortened and lie angle corrected do me more harm than good without changing weight, swing weight, shaft flex etc?
Jacob the short answer is no. You might find it is better.

I’m 5’6 and I play 5/8” short 2 degrees flat....best thing I’ve ever done...playing z965 Srixon right now 176 carry 7 iron....before I changed lie 167 carry with a bad miss left occasionally

The original model I think can but since then the hosel has gotten smaller and I would say no
I bought some Mizuno 921 forged irons here in Japan. My first visit the fitter was recommending 3-4 degrees upright. And he used a lie board. When I went back to buy them a different guy was there. We looked at the flight scope which pretty much said that they were okay at stock. Thing is, I was trying to change my stance the first time and was using a neutral stance. I switched back to slightly closed the second visit. Now? I often lose my mid-irons to the right.
What’s your take on this?
assuming everything is the same it sounds as if you are holding off on the longer irons as to guide them instead of swing through the ball.

It doesn't make sense that a tall golfer (6'5") who needs 4* upright will be pointing the face of the club to the left of the target after the club is bent for him. Rather - It would seem like if an average golf (5'8") grabbed the taller golfer's adjusted club it might point to the left of the target. My point being - in the right hands the lie of the club works most effectiently if it's fit for a given golfer.
Hi Jim! I'm a tall golfer (6ft8), I've got a wrist to height length of 40inches. Would you recommend 5deg upright irons with 2inch longer than standard?
Go look at the Ping color code chart you can't ask a guy who's never seen you hit but the Ping chart is a good place to start for a new golfer like you
The deviation in angle of the lie angle may not be as much in the low irons but it’s made up by the fact they go further, I. E. The ball goes offline by as much because the a 5 iron for example may go 60 yards further than a pitching wedge at given angle.

It can, it wont make you hook but can direct the ball that way
hey there.. i have a forged black finish Srixon Z745 20 degree 3iron. if i wanna to bent it to 24 degree by mine local pro shop stuff. will that damage and leave a mark because club is black finish ?

Depending on the type of finish you can risk cracking the finish much like a chrome finish. most pvd finishes are imo harder or more brittle than chrome. Yes a mark would be left behind but mostly likely will be unnoticeable after the couple shots and throw into the bag.
You have a wrench that clicks when reaching torque for shafts changes . Where do I get one of these? secondly should I check each club before hitting balls or playing a course?
the torque wrench typically comes with the driver, FW or hybrid. each company makes them .You could ask custom service for the one that matches your club. No I dont think you need to check the torque each time. It seat properly it very tight. Over tightening or checking can make for a broken screw.
just purchased titliest ap2 forged just need to have them fitted for me. I probably will need my lie and loft adjusted. Being they are forged irons there is no problem in adjusting?

if bent properly it should impact the loft of the iron

Correct should not affect loft if bent properly. However if not it will. Also lie angle bending will not affect the bounce

I had a pro suggest trying to stand closer to the ball, i guess I was reaching a bit and catching it on the toe much the same. That said, you really gotta try finding a lie board, I suspect w/out changing your swing, an upright lie would help. If anything, it would be good for the 'brain' aspect.

Which should come first, swing analysis or club fitting?
Personally, if you are very early into golf, i.e. just getting started I would recommend the lesson, if you are into golf for a while then the fitting. A fitting should include some swing analysis to help the golfer.
@@McGolf Thanks sir. I’ve played since middle school. Stopped for about 15 years then started back last year. Never been fitted, lessons, nor swing analysis.
A "static fitting" is the most useful method for a beginner or somebody who doesn't have anything resembling a consistent swing.
A dictum of the fitting world is to fit the golfer in the present.
For the golfers previously mentioned, i ALWAYS recommend taking lessons. Plural. "Then, come back in! We'll have a blast!"

IF I wanted to make a super wedge and bend it from 46 to a 45, what would be the resulting calculation to lie and shaft length?
Length is not impacted and the lie would be one strong
very basic and about the simplest thing out there is to bend a Club 1 degree strong.. people do it all the time
You need the Magnetic Lie Angle tool to place on the club face.

What if you have graphite shafts, still able to adjust.
ken edick you are grabbing the hosel with the bending tool, the shaft really does come into the equation
Would it be better to just trade my Ping Zing 2 silver dot clubs for some standard black dot rather than to bend them?
I am not familiar with the degree difference between the the two colors. However If it is more that 1.5 degrees you arw better off getting the new color because the PING irons are tough to bend and when they do 1.5 is about the max change.
can you change the lie angle on m5 irons 4° without breaking them?
I believe they are cast? So no 2 degree is a max.
@@McGolf Oh! I wasn't aware you could change the lie angle on cast clubs. Interesting! I have a combo set of Mizuno Mph5's 2i-4i and Mp25's 5i-pw. I know the Mp25's are forged, so they can be adjusted 2.5-3.0° (I assume), but what about the MpH5's? I believe they're hollow. They don't feel forged, and it doesn't say "Forged" on the club, nor does it have "GF FORGED/" etched into the hosel. Can these Mph5's be bent? If so, How much?

Siouxpreme lie angle is dependent on the length of the club, and way you swing into ball. I suggest going to a local golf store and do a dynamic test then have the clubs bent to the proper lie angle. Additionally do a full fitting ensure your club length is also proper

If i choke down about 3/4" on my clubs the lie angle looks like it improves...are my clubs too long?
Either they are too long or the lie angle is too flat
when I choke down on my clubs the sole appears to flatten somewhat...

Q: If you make a club more flat, does that mean the shaft/grip is is moving down towards the ground making the shaft closer to horizontal? So then making the club *More Upright* means the club is more verticle???
I don't know why this confuses me????? I thought if a club were too flat then the toe is raised, and too upright means the heel is raised? Is this correct? A million thanks to anyone that takes the time to answer me.
Flatter means the toe is lower and the shaft is flatter to the ground when the sole of the club is flush with the ground. I think you're overthinking it.

Joseph! I don't know if you're reading this but two years later I found your question and I really wanted to answer it for you because I was puzzled by the same thing myself....
Videos like this are for newbies and seem to be simple but they never State exactly what flat or upright even mean!!....
It's like teaching someone math before you even teach them what numbers are...
Alright so if you need to be in a flatter lie angle that means your shaft needs to be moved more parallel to the ground... a flat lie angle Club will have its shaft more parallel to the ground think of flat as the ground and upright as standing upright....
So bending the shaft more parallel to the ground makes a club flatter!
Moving the shaft more perpendicular (think standing as opposed to lying down) makes a club more upright.
If you've got a flatter swing, you need a flatter lie angle!
a upright swing needs an upright lie angle ...
A good way to help know is to look at the Ping color code chart. the shorter you are the more likely it is you'll need a flatter lie angle and vice versa with tall guys... but not always you have to know your swing to know which one you need if you're short and especially if you're hitting a lot of balls in the heel you're definitely going to need a flat lie angle
And Joseph what you wrote in your comment is exactly correct!
If someone is in a set of irons thats too upright for them, they'll have the toe in the air if it's really exaggerating...
You want to match a flat swing with flat-lie angle clubs and an upright swing needs upright clubs

What is R&A and PGA rules regard lie angle for putter. Long putter, broomstick. Is there a limit to upright angle. I prefer standing close to ball.....thus requiring a almost 90dgr angle preportional to ground level and shaft. I believe 90dg is illegal. What is limit!
Question: putter: stainless steel or copper berrylium?
personally stainless steel. Copper will have a softer feel. more importantly is it the right length lie, loft type etc.
How's the the wrist to floor measurement come into play in terms of lie angle
its a starting point to compare to a standard i.e. if the norm is 34" and you are 32 then certainly a change will be needed assuming everything is the same
My only comment on this video is about the statement that the club that is struct off the heal on a lie board definitely needs bent flatter by a lot. While that may be technically true, that can be absolutely the wrong thing to do if the person is already slicing the ball. Since 90% of amateur golfers are slicers, giving them 'perfect' lie angles from a lie board test is the wrong approach completely - the same but opposite is also true of better players who draw the ball who might be toe down on a lie board. Far better to fit for starting direction and ball flight with the parameter of keeping the actual lie angle + or - 4 degrees from what a lie board states as this would be a workable range for club interaction with the turf. It is nice to know what a lie board shows you but do not use it for fitting the correct lie for a player - fit lie for ball direction and curvature. You of course can argue that it's better to fit for perfect lie and then tell the person to change their swing - but a far better approach is to inform the customer that you are building a club to help their ball flight, tell them what you've done, that it is changeable in the future if and when they improve / change their delivery than to give them a perfect lie angle that makes their draw into a hook or a fade into a slice.
Never had a club fitting in my life and I'm a scratch golfer, sounds like hocus pocus.
Happy for your good play. If you've never had a fitting, it probably means that standard clubs fit your swing well. Quite a few of us aren't in the same boat, however and can benefit greatly from custom fit clubs. It ain't magic.
William, Just think of the improvement you could make if fit. There are tons of golfers with the athletic gift to do well. The pro can do the same with a brick and stick but get fit to ensure the bills are paid,
I can vouch for it, I play 1/2" short, 4 deg flat if I didn't I want be hitting hooks all day long
Lie angle is such a joke. You check it from a flat lie board on a flat floor. Then you play golf on a golf course that couldn’t be any farther from being flat. So you’re adjusted 2 degrees upright, then your approach shot from the fairway the ball is 2” above your feet, now your club is so upright you hit it 15 yards to the left. But a set of clubs, go play and have fun
Jason I could not disagree more. That is akin, to " I cant get fit on an artificial mat because its too flat and there is no divot". Cant hit off a perfect lie because there aren't any on the course? I think you will find there are more flat places on golf course than you think.

@@McGolf Maybe, but I definitely feel my swing changes when hitting on to a board. I agree ball flight is the key indicator to correct lie angle along with impact tape.
Love your videos, but, I hate your music when you add it in the videos. Your music is about 3 volume levels higher than when you talk. Might be nib picking, but it causes me problems because I watch you later at night when others in my house are sleeping.
