    One of the BIG reasons I went with saddleback is their tobacco color. It has a sort of velvety texture almost "boot leather-esque" feel to it. I know people will hate that cuz they think premium expensive leather usually feels smooth but to me that just feel plasticky (a LOT of leather, even supposedly good leather just feels plasticky to me) and most cheap leather have that same feel. SO i LOVE the velvety feel to the leather and the darkening is just a bonus! The only other time I've LOVED the way the leather felt is horween leather strap on a watch I had. Other good quality leather like those that are used in my headphones (they are top grain leather, treated and dyed black) are clearly GOOD quality, but the soft feel reminds me too much of cheaper leather.

    While I agree that all the factors you listed makes a difference and those factors can influence the color, SBL still has a choice to use that leather or not. They can choose to reject hides that are too far out of color range. They should either do this or wait until they have a substantial supply of that same color and show what the run will look like. Maybe a color swatch on the website that's updated for each run. I know that everyone's monitor color varies but you can easily see the difference in those two products and make an informed decision.
    Otherwise, it's misleading. What they show is not what you get. That's just not acceptable.
    Thanks for sharing!

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I think the tobacco color has changed again, but in a direction I like this time. SO much change!

    I love the dark colour. Each to their own. 😜

    I did comment earlier that l don't mind the darker colour - but yes the difference in texture is very noticeable (new tobacco seams smooth less leathery so to speak) not velvety like we are used to and love.

    If you want a specific color you go to plastic. Have multiple Tobacco over time and it is natural. One of the reason I have Saddleback.

      If you bought items in the tobacco color pre-2010, then you will immediately notice how the 2024 tobacco color is more brown than yellow. The new tobacco also has black streaks on the surface of the leather like a broom was dipped in black dye and very lightly brushed on in one stroke.

    I know exactly what you mean about the tobacco, I have been in love with it for 10 years! My favourite is the soft, pliable, velvety tobacco but it is very hit and miss these days when you order which is such a pity. I have been lucky enough to get a pre-loved medium tobacco satchel and it is divine. Soft pigskin lining and it is mushy and soft and so tactile. I tend to keep it close so I can touch it, haha. I do prefer the warm honey brown tones to the tobacco and I found that the darker tobacco had a harder feel to it, which ruined it for me as it wasn't as pleasant to touch and as it wore it never softened, just rounded out. I really wish they could stick to the soft, pliable, velvet tobacco regardless of colour tones.

      I do wish they were a bit more consistent. I feel the same way as you that I'm happy with the bags I have. Not giving them up!

      I know exactly what you mean. The differences are not just in color tone bit in overall softness. I too have a medium satchel that is sooo soft and wrinkly already after less than a year of use. Then I have some older pieces that just never seem to soften up enough. particularly I have a DCB satchel from 2012 that is so stiff it just probably never will get soft and wrinkly. It's like a tank, for better or worse.

    I have loved Tobacco since 2010, but prefer the darker shades (your simple backpack is my absolute favorite I've seen anywhere!). But I agree that it has really changed lately. The texture in general was just so different than the previous 6 years & I feel like buying anything in tobacco from them directly right now is such a lottery. Some people get such amazing marbling, but mine was just "eh". Thank goodness for the buy/sell page!

    What drew me to SBL is the great tobacco color. But, it's so unpredictable. The DCB and chestnut is more consistent. I've since fallen in love with the DCB color. Amazing! I fell out of love with the tobacco color because it's not consistent. The DCB pieces I have are a consistent great color.

    Great attention to detail! I've also noticed the almost green tints of tobacco in some of my bags. I too have a massive collection. The latest bag I got (front pocket thin briefcase) has a colder brown whereas some of the other bags skew towards red.
    Tell me more about the DCB drama of 2012! Ideally a video.
    Thanks!

      @ThePerfectLeatherBag  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      David, I don't know all the details to the drama with the DCB color. I've heard that in 2012 and before, the color was consistent through the whole hyde. And now, the color is brown on top, and a warm orange/brown in the middle as can be seen on the edges of the leather. I like DCB both ways, but some people are die-hard fans of the old way. If you have more questions about it, I'd ask the buy/sell facebook group about it.

    I don't believe the tobacco leather is tumbled. Suzette may have slipped up and said it during her a video of her showcasing a water bag. My bible color that just arrived today is a little bit lighter in tone than your satchel. New logo and all. I would not buy new products in DCB because I love my 2012 classic briefcase - the newest DCB feels like plastic and does not appear dyed all the way through. I think SBL was correct though in their explanation of the many factors that effect the tobacco color.

    Do you try to avoid getting the Tobacco leather wet or do you use a leather protestant?

    • @ThePerfectLeatherBag
      @ThePerfectLeatherBag  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Rebecca Pope I never avoid saddleback leather tobacco because of rain. That's a wonderful thing about it. It's just fine in a little or a lot of rain. I never use a rain protectant either. Great question!! Thanks for watching

    I love tobacco as well! I got a classic briefcase in December and it was soft/velvety and had the reddish brown color like your backpack. Then I got the pouch at the beginning of May 2016 and it was more uniform and not as soft to the touch, very much like your new bag. At the end of May 2016, I got the waterbag in tobacco. It was backordered for a couple of weeks. I'm assuming that this one is made from a newer batch of leather since it was backordered. It is a bit lighter than my briefcase from December and soft/velvety to the touch (softest of the three). I am not a fan of the pouch color but am in the process of forcing it to break in a bit and will see how it goes. I like the tobacco leather that has patches of a lighter "furry" look (for lack of a more thoughtful description) when you change your viewing angle an in certain lighting conditions. I also love the way that it feels. I think this is what makes the tobacco leather most appealing to me. Anyway, thanks for the reviews.

    Quality Control. Or lack thereof. If they can't eliminate variations in the process, then they need to sort out the non conforming color variations. Simple as that. I did QC for decades so I know whereof I speak.

    Wish I could figure out a way to get rid of the 'fuzzy' yellowish tobacco on my 2021 version of the small portfolio. My wife said she wanted tobacco...when it came in she didn't like it and took my chestnut...out of my chestnut work bag..which alsonhas a chestnut cable bag in it... I've had all that for years.
    The tobacco we got is so light colored. But the worst is the fuzzy nap. Looks like suede and honestly looks cheap. I've put their leather milk on it at least 1x a week for a month...when it dries, it's still fuzzy and yellowish. :(
    I'm considering just buying another from SBL in chestnut and dumping this one on Ebay and taking the loss.

    Tobacco looks great but the wide range in color kills it for me. It would be a different game if that was caused by usage but from right out the gate......PASS......ill stick with black

    stop buying chrome tanned leather. Veg tanned leather will age well much better.

      The guy at the SBL-company said in the comments of one of his videos that chrome-tanned has better water-resistance than vegetable tanned leather.
