Kemp was a freak of nature, 19 or 20 when he came to the NBA. I knew who Payton was, Skyline was all conquering with him, kind of like Jason Kidd in high school, looked like a grown ass man playing kids. Then Kemp is doing that stuff to Wayman Tisdale. Kemp was just stronger and jumped as high as he needed to for the boards. He got WAY up there, total beast
That was an old, beat-up Larry at that point, but he just had to re-adjust the rookie's mindset. But then he picks the kid up by offering to help him in the offseason. Class. BTW, Shawn was a beast!
Birdtrump...Who mastered all the skills Larry did ? NOBODY . Some were great mid range shooter . Some were great outside shooters Some were good inside in traffic . Larry was all that . Then there was the passing , behind the back , over the shoulder , between the defenders legs , full court . Then the rebounding , diving for balls. Sme players did some of those things but nobody did them all . Oh , and clutch scoring . Yeah . When people want to counter with Wilt Chamberlain or Jordan or Kobe . Yeah great players all . But they didn't have ALL the skills that Larry had . Can you imagine Wilt diving for a ball ? Or Jordan ? Did Jordan or Wilt ever pass behind their back , over their shoulder . My favorite play by Larry was the shot he took and made from behind the backboard . Another one was where Larry rebounded his own shot that went to the right of the basket and made the shot . No ...there was nobody who had all of Larry's skills . And hearing g these great players tell their stories of his brushless confirms it for me .
I’d like to preface this by saying that I played basketball in NYC in an all primarily black high school and got my nick name from the brothers playing at The Cage and at Rucker Park. We were all trying to emulate what Larry Bird was doing on the playground and it was impossible for us. However, I remember hearing what Pat Riley said, “If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I’d choose Michael Jordan, but if I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life, I’d take Larry Bird."
Adjusting his game to shoot with his left hand to reduce the impact of fouls. That's a great player. How many could do that? Larry has got to be a top 5 player. Larry reaching out to Kemp as a rookie, inviting him to work out out of respect for the way he guarded him. That's a great man.
Love the way you piece these Bird stories together. They deserve millions of views for how complete they feel, how comprehensive they are in terms of perspective from multiple viewpoints--I think the off-putting laughing guy on the left side of the thumbnail kept this video down, which is a shame, because it is a work of art in terms of craftsmanship.
@@jimmyboy131 I dont care about todays game, rules, ball handling, supposed better skills, if im making a team of anyone I can choose, Larry Bird is one of my starting five. And im a lifetime Sixers fan who he beat OVER and OVER again when I was a little kid in the 80s.
The sun rises and the sun sets, and so it is with every athlete's career. Every once in a while a very special athlete comes along that has the magic combination of huge self-driven motivation, an abundance of talent and an unstoppable work ethic, and we kid ourselves into thinking they will play forever. We forget that their level of play takes a huge physical toll on them. But it sure is sweet when that player, in the sun set of their career, steps up and reminds us why we loved them so much in the first place. Larry Legend my personal choice for 👍🐐👍
Loved the Reign Man, so much fun to watch. He and Nique were the first guys that dunked with artistry and force. Love the fact Bird a slow unathletic dude humbled Shawn. Imagine the guys in the locker room after the game teasing him about getting busted by Larry. Also Shawn is a great story teller too. Hes also has some nice cannabis stores in Seattle
My Nephew who was a natural athlete and no longer with us was a Sean Kemp fan when he was a boy. He wore a Celtics hat, but there was a Sean Kemp poster in his room. Man, basketball back in the day was so much better. I am not trying to be an old head, but basketball had that little more grittiness and people stayed on their respective teams instead of jumping around. Side note I hated the Lakers, but to this day I will tell you they were the best I ever watch play. Reason I think Bird is the greatest to play the game was the fact he could even find a way to beat that Lakers team in the 80’s. They were just that good.
While the Bulls were my team, I still loved to watch Kemp and the Sonics when I got the chance. So cool to hear Bird worked with him a bit. Glory days of the NBA, baby.
He got his Knee Pain after reading the article about Larry Bird being washed up 😂. And he didn't want to go Against Larry Bird when He's on a Mission!!! Kemp just happened to be the Unlucky one 😂. Larry Bird LEGEND G.O.A.T. Not Michael Jordan and Lebron James PERIOD!!!! Larry Bird.
I can understand how he did not 'know' who larry bird was. I wrestled someone in HS who became an Olympian 6 months later. I lost very quickly, and had no idea who he was until after.
The crazy thing is from that game if you watch most of LB shots are from close to the 3 pt line. If he would have backed up 2 feet he probably would have nailed 50 pts that game
All this talk about the goat of basketball. The fact of the matter is if it wasn't for Larry Bird and magic Johnson there might not be basketball. Or at least not the way you see it today.
If i remember correctly the Celtics had a chance to draft Kemp but they passed him up. They also passed up Tim Hardaway. Had they picked either one of those players the Celtics would have been relevant throughout the 90s even with the unfortunate deaths of Len Bias, Reggie Lewis and retirement of Bird and Mchale. That draft pick was their last chance to keep the team from fading out due to age, death and injuries.
This is awesome! I thought I’d seen all the interviews about Bird, but I hadn’t seen this one. Super enjoyable!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed
Ditto. Thanks!
I Absolutely love listening to these war stories about the shenanigans of what Larry Bird Did. Thank you!
Kemp had 6'10" height ,over 7' wingspan, a 42" Vert and 20 year old energy.
Legend still ate like a king!
When players sat out rather than face Larry it was known as Bird Flu!
Kemp was a legit phenom, this interview was something I've never seen, thank you!

48 points in 3 quarters!!!!! 🤣
Something about Kemp's face makes you want to smile. He's got a 'cat that ate the canary' kind of smile.😏
It's so insane to hear all this, and then at the end it's like "oh he got a triple double and played insane defense too"
What a great love for a little brother. I love it. Two amazing men of the sport.
Adjusting his game to shoot with his left hand to reduce the impact of fouls. That's a great player. How many could do that? Larry has got to be a top 5 player.

A 40 point triple double? Thats disgusting lol.
From a supposedly washed old Larry. Nope, he was still the Legend. And legends don't die, they continue on into myth and onto the walls of history.

@@chocolatetownforever7537 I'm with you there. If I'm building a winning dynasty, the first player I choose is prime Larry Bird. Then Jordan.
@@chocolatetownforever753733 my first pic. Bill russell my second. Kevin mchale my third.
its cool that bird gave props to kemp for his effort and reached out to him.
Almost like when Bird got dunked on my Dominique and Bird said, "I like you kid, you've got spunk. But I'm still going to drop 40 on you a**".
Great video. I sure do miss Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton playing for the Seattle Supersonics. Those were good times.
JJ Reddick says this guy was overrated.
When I think of Reddick I believe he is overrated every way possible.
Reddick is a joke.
I believe by the end of the Laker Catastrophe coming in the 24/25 Season J.J. and Lebron won't be friends anymore.
If Reddick tried to guard Larry, Larry would give him 100
@@batbattlehistory366360 but still impressive 😂

He really was not slow and unathletic for a 6-10 1/2 double-digit rebounding guy.
Larry-true GOAT

LARRY LEGEND IS A UNICORN AND THE TRUE GOAT!!! 🐐 ☘️
LeBron ain't larry

Let's remember Shawn Kemp was a bad dude I think people forget how awesome of a player he was!!!!💯
Great Vid Nick. Haven’t heard this story yet. Much appreciated.

But that’s why Bird made basketball fun…Kemp was a great talent too
Larry bird is my favorite small forward over lebron and everyone else.
I use to love watching Kemp play.
'Triple double' on the young Rook! Larry is indeed, a good teacher! 😁
The crazy thing is from that game if you watch most of LB shots are from close to the 3 pt line. If he would have backed up 2 feet he probably would have nailed 50 pts that game

Why the funeral music at the beginning?
2 Hoosier guys...❤❤

The Best there ever was Lady Bird
Kemp was better than Lebron
That cat in the bottom right looks just like Bernie Williams.
Lebronda this lebronda that he would be chewed up and spat out against the 70's and eighties teams
Cute test 12
What happened to the 23 stories about LeBron James in 23 weeks seems like you just stopped doing that.
No one was watching them. 🤷🏽♂️
They will be coming back, just had a few issues but we will have the LeBron series return.
Cause you the only one who gives a crap about LeBron!
They got up to two episodes and ran out of material
I wish we had some video of LeBron trying to guard Bird.
Bird is a Legend. Back when the NBA was great and full of talent.
