    I ordered one of these on amazon yesterday! I'm in indiana. The variety of replaceable blades are very attractive, but I think they are all basically no name stainless steel. The box cutter attachment, on the other hand, is the real attraction for me. I can always order quality razors! If the scissors work as well as I hope, then this will definitely be a keeper for special occasions.

    I have a Victorinox which I've had for years. Damn heavy for it's size, and awkward to open most of the blades. The simple way this one just lifts the blades out is nice, my old tool doesn't have any scissors, let alone such large ones, doesn't have such a sturdy-looking knife and cost a heap more. I think just to keep in the glove-box of my truck this will be about perfect. Hope so, cos I ordered one 2 days ago!

    Thanks Pete! Opinion…almost all multi tool makers live in terror that they might be seen to have one less tool than the competition. So they cram their designs full of a dozen tools most of us will never use and the result is a big heavy lump that doesn’t get carried. Give me a smaller, lighter design with just the basics - pliers, knife, good screwdrivers. The manufacturer that creates a ‘modular’ design that allows the purchaser to choose just the tools they wish to include will clean up.

    • @simonh6371
      @simonh6371 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only good one in that configuration is the Skeletool. Gerber made a couple with a minimalist toolset like the Crucial and Balance and I think SOG made some minimalist ones too but they're not the best quality. GOAT tools have a modular design but the handles are designed to incorporate a full toolset so it makes no sense removing all handle tools except the blade and drivers. I cant EDC a Skeletool as I'm in the UK and it has locking blades so I have my own deconstructed version. A Spyderco Urban , Knipex Cobra XS, and a bit driver.

    Awesome video as always and as a locksmith I definitely lol'd at the shitty broken honda key.
    Find a local locksmith and have that remote key swapped over to a new shell. Should be quite a bit cheaper than a new key but also ask if they will rekey the ignition lock. The little half wafers in honda locks are notoriously shitty and develop burrs and get hung up inside the ignition lock. When that happens the lock seizes up and gets harder to turn... which as you know is enough to break keys.
    If you don't get it rekeyed it will eventually seize up for real and be unusable. Then you'll have to tow it to a honda dealer and get a whole new ignition lock. :(
    Thanks for all the great vids!

    Also got one of these. Maybe I'm missing a trick with the addition of the swap in utility blade because I found when it wasn't deployed it stuck out so far that the plier jaws could no longer close all the way when in use. Also had no detent (unlike the other blades I tried in it). So I ended up choosing the sheep's foot. The utility blade does work much better in the separate knife handle you can get for this system but a shame about its compatibility with the multitool.

    I don't own a multi tool, and really don't think I need one. Most of them look big and bulky with tools I will never use. But your reference to Ganzo knives got my attention. I own a Ganzo 721 automatic. I think it has great aesthetics. Feels good in the hand. The blade had a very sharp edge out of the box. Yeah...the 440C steel is not very good. The edge dulls very easily. But it strops back to sharp very quickly and easily. At $28 USD delivered, it is a steal! If this multi tool is made as well as my Ganzo knife, I might be interested in one. Thanks Pete!

    That removeable scale is actually a really cool idea, though. That's a very smart idea.

    Let’s be honest the big name brands have been getting a pass for years. The steel in those is entry level at best and even in more extreme environments they are generally used for more peripheral tasks . Aa you alluded to I love the engineering component of these knives. I think they were smart enough to realize 99% use will be putting nightlight or toy batteries in or cutting paracord at a camp site.Even that echelon of people who do extreme survival and recommend taking a multi tool pretty much use it for the same thing: peripheral activities like tightening the screws on the handle of their $500 survival knife, or pulling out of splinter. But on that sweet spot of life that remains pretty constant regardless of where we are and what we are doing, this seems more practical. It won’t cut into your hand when you’re being Santas’s little helper, unscrewing toys for kids to put batteries in. Some of the namebrand’s have crappy locking mechanisms. I took a leather man tool into the Amazon rainforest, and after six days, could barely get it open because you have to shove your thumbnail into open it, and the dirt and grime made that next to impossible. In those environments, the trick is to clean it with diesel fuel but nobody had any diesel fuel so we’re pretty much opening at 400 markup. What annoys me is brands get to hold their position simply because they know no one will ever really use them for their proposed ability So with navy seal in mind, we all buy the expensive super tool that opens Christmas toys. We all buy the $800 knife to open boxes with. And the namebrand ES maintain their position because every once in a while if somebody really does use it for extreme survival and it breaks the money and replacements succeeds the money they make for Christmas toys

  • @mikececconi2677
    @mikececconi2677 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    99% of the time, the scissors on a multi-tool are so small and flimsy, you might as well just chuck them and cut whatever you're cutting with the plain-edge blade, save the weight. I do like the idea of the scissors in a multi-tool not being completely crap that's added in just to add to the number of tools!

  • @RustyRhin0

    I wonder how it compares to Gerber's dual force as I've been carrying that, loosely in my pocket, at work. I'm one of the outliers that prefers a snub/stubby plier; I've more often needed grip area/strength over reachability/finesse as well as only a few extra tools like beater blade, pry bar, and a good screw-/bit driver.
    I'll definitely check out Dom's video but I think for now my endgame is the dual force; maybe until goat tools comes with a snub nose variant but their current/first release will be my first full size needle nose multitool so that'll definitely be an interesting comparison

  • @CNYKnifeNut
    @CNYKnifeNut ปีที่แล้ว

    I got the "Nextool" branded ones right after they came out a few years and they were terrible. The folded steel frame that made up the moveable scissor arm completely deformed the first time I tested them on some hard plastic and left it so that the arm just pushed down when squeezed, without the scissor blade actually moving. I loved the concept, and even the overall design, but they used 3cr all around and just weren't a useable tool. I think I paid $28, though.
    It's nice to see that the scissors on these are built (somewhat) differently, but my experience with the Nextool ones, and the price, leave me not even remotely interested.
    I'm really curious to see a long term review of them, though.

IMO Victorinox are the best brand for designing small tools that can actually do a particular job, like the files for example which are seriously sharp and useful at removing material. Whereas I feel like most other brands tend to put steel approximations of actually good tools in their multitools.
