    Thank you - very helpful. Still favouring the Acer but are they both now classified as Chromebook Plus? Moving through your reviews as much as I can, you are very kind to share such honest feedback.

      Hi, glad the videos are helpful. Nope, neither of these are Chromebook Plus, their hardware wouldn't meet the spec to be considered. Are you particularly after a large 17.3 inch Chromebook or considering slightly smaller display models too?

    • @thetexastroubadour
      @thetexastroubadour 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MergeDroid Large Chromebook plus would be my first choice - are you thinking of a model?

    • @MergeDroid
      @MergeDroid  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @thetexastroubadour the largest Chromebook Plus models will be some of the 16 inch gaming Chromebooks that Acer, Lenovo and ASUS released. I haven't been hands on with any. If you check any out and want a second opinion or to confirm it definitely qualifies for the Chromebook Plus update, please drop me details here.

    I had the Asus CX1700 for about 2 years. I also had an external 16" monitor hooked up to it, a bluetooth mouse, and some Logitech speakers into the 3.5mm. It was a nice little 2-screen setup. I gifted the whole rig to my niece who was starting college. I bought a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro! It was a good day for everyone 💃🕺

    Current price for the Asus in the UK is £149 in Argos if you can find one in stock! The 15 inch version (albeit only 64GB ssd) is £139 at Argos and John Lewis. The Acer is well over £200 everywhere and I think that's swung it for me.

    • @MergeDroid
      @MergeDroid  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks. Just checked Argos, that's the same HD+ with N4500 combo as I had here. Have you seen the FHD with N6000 to compare prices? Might be worth it. There's an 'excellent' refurb for £165 on Ebay from TabRetail. If 15.6 is enough see the video on the Chromebook Plus I purchased over Black Friday, there's a Grade C at £188 from the same seller.

    I have the Asus CX1700, good overall Chromebook thats great for at home but not very portable due to weight.
    Speakers are not great but a bluetooth soundbar gets around that.
    Processor is a little weak but livable.
    4GB of ram is a little limiting once you enable the Linux development enviornment (then you can have Libre office and Google Earth Pro along with other Linux apps).
    128Gb of storage is great. add in a SD card and loads of storage for MP3's.
    Love the huge real estate sized screen, why isnt there more 17 inch Chromebooks ?
    Best bit overall is the huge battery life. Although I don't get 14 hours, 12 hours is still respectible.

    I bought the cheapest ,TN, version of the Asus . (My first venture outside the MS Windows PC ecosystem into the mysterious world of Chromebooks so I budgeted low.) I was more than pleasantly surprised.
    The TN screen is much better than I expected . I use it as a "desk" laptop and I normally look at it "straight on" and not from the side so the differences between TN and IPS are not too apparent...TN is a little bit more washed-out all right but 4K TH-cam videos still look fab.) Battery lasts AT LEAST 10 hours playing a looping TH-cam "relaxation" video. I fell asleep before the battery died. I always use an external mouse so I didn't test the trackpad.
    It's a heavy beast all right but that is to be expected with a 17 inch+ screen and you probably won't be going mountaineering with it. For the price it is a TOTAL bargain and probably the best-value-for-money computer I have ever bought.

    just bought a renewed Lenovo Gaming 16 inch i3-1215U for $40 more than the Acer. It has in every aspect much better specs [display, cpu, memory, keyboard, speakers, camera, weight] and end-of-updates is June 2030. What I don't like is the jumpiness of the touchpad. But I suspect some input lag in the driver and not the hardware.

    • @MergeDroid
      @MergeDroid  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a nice option for a large screen Chromebook with some more premium features. The price difference new, certainly over the N4500 processor based versions of the CX1700 and 317, is looking higher here in the UK than you've seen. That's for buying new at least, but I'm certainly going to keep an eye out for any refurb options of that Lenovo and the other recent gaming Chromebook offerings as I'd be interested to test them out. Glad you're liking yours!

    Its been years since I bought an Acer. But I bought in the past 2 Acer laptops and one Chromebook
    ALL of them though a year or two down the line had their screen permanently shutoff never to turn back on again so I am very weary of them.
    Do they still have such issues?

    • @MergeDroid
      @MergeDroid  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I've never personally experienced that with any Acer, or any Chromebook or laptop. I haven't heard this reported as a common issue either. Which Acer Chromebook did you have? Are you looking to get a 317 now?

    • @MergeDroid
      @MergeDroid  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd recommend the Acer 317 in most cases as you'll get the IPS screen, it's going to look better for your work an movies. See if you can get it with the Pentium Silver N6000 processor, otherwise the Celeron N4500 like I have is decent enough. Probably just the British pronunciation, but I've listened back and to my ear it is distinctive enough. There's also normally a visual cue in the frame too. Let me know if there's a particular time stamp to you need clarification on.
