There were good reasons to stop.
The first was environmental reasons. That's the reason Ubisoft gave. That printing so many pieces of paper wasn't exactly green.
The second was the rise of digital games, games that get updated etc. So even if a game had a manual, even for a singleplayer game, it was always possible it would get outdated.
Thirdly, online versions cover all these and more.

The year is 3240, time travel is a reality now. The first place to travel? 1998. That's right, we're going to steal all the video game manuals to complete our collections.

What bothers me the most is that there are still those little arms inside the case that hold the manual yet most games don't come with any sort of piece of paper for it to hold. It's like they know the manual is basically dead but they don't want to fully accept it so they keep those little arms there as a reminder of the past.

I would sit there for hours not even playing the game I got because I was looking through the manual, looking at all of the small details. It was such a huge part of the experience that I overlooked, and now I'm just noticing how empty it feels when I get a physical copy of a game (like you said). Whenever i want to feel peace i just put on any Scott video and it helps me, even when I'm having troubles to sleep because i have a very important test the next day or something like that and I'm pretty stressed out, just listening whatever this man says about stupid Nintendo games makes me feel better. Right now I'm having a really tough time, i just can't find peace or stability no matter how hard i try, but one thing is sure, at the end of the day, when im tired in my bed having troubles to sleep because mi head is full of trash, i can always put these videos to feel calm and get up the next day. I had totally forgotten about this but this video reminded me of how when I was little I would always excitedly open the box to look at the manual inside. I loved all the little stuff they included with the game. I would read over the back of the box and then I would open the box and look through the instruction manual. I just found it really exciting. I remember when they first started phasing out manuals and I would excited open my box and just find some random junk paper with terms of service and advertisements. Thought it was just that one game being crap but then the next game was the same, and the next game, and the next. Now I open my switch games and all that’s inside is one tiny little cartridge. The box feels so empty. It feels like something is missing.

I remember my neighbor not letting me look through his Melee manual because he wanted to play against me without knowing any of the moves so he could win. I also remember tracing the artwork on the Sonic Adventure 2 Battle manual and bringing it to school so I could learn how to draw the characters.

Cindy Kitty I never thought to trace my SA2B manual, but I did use it for references and essentially traced without putting paper overtop it. I'm happy someone else in the world understands my child self~

9:27 God of War ps4 you showed even has the name of the game on the reverse spine so you could reverse the paper and have a cooler artsy cover that's still practical

I really miss game manuals. Top things missed: Tips & tricks, maps, and item/enemy descriptions. They'd also fill you in on who you are and what your goal is in the game, but I think that an opening cutscene is a welcome improvement.
Finally, back in the 8- and 16-Bit days, probably my favorite part of all was seeing what was supposedly in the game designers' heads when they created the on-screen representations. An idea I have is for TLOZelda, but in a comic book art style using all the original manual art of the characters and items.

The manuals were easier to keep for disc-based games, but for cartridge-based games, people would often take the cart out of the box and throw everything else away. Many would keep the manuals (but eventually lose them), but I remember mentioning manuals to someone in conversation and them scoffing and saying that they immediately throw their game manuals away.

I remember buying Dark Souls III about a year ago, I opened the box in a book shop I was relaxing in, expecting to find absolutely nothing other than the disc and receipt. I virtually exploded with joy in public when I saw that beautiful Prima manual in there. The manual in the original MGS was stunning, filled with info and even had fold out artwork. Manuals just made a game feel like a more complete package. Every time I buy a game and open up the box only to see half of it empty I near the final phase of hollowing.

Memories I will always cherish from childhood was going out with my parents, managing to convince them to stop by a GameStop or to get that random gem of a game I found on the shelf of an antique shop, getting back in the car and reading the manual on the way home to hype myself up for the game.

PS2 games are just so cool! The high quality cases feel so meaty because they have big full color manuals to flip through, and a little button to pop the game out.. they’re some of the best game boxes in my opinion
I legitimately use manuals sometimes old older games, one of my favorite manuals is Kingdom Hearts. It has lots of instructions and information, but also full pages of artwork of the characters. It’s really beautiful!
